GEORGE J. MAYER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
BARREL-MAKING IVIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1911.
Application filed January 24, 1910. Serial No. 539,828.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Barrel-Making Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to produce a winding drum upon which thin wood may be wound with wire hoops to be stapled thereto to form barrels.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal sec tional view through the cylinder upon which the barrel body is formed, as seen when looking in the direction indicated by the arrows from the broken line 5 5 in Fig. 2; Figs. 2 and 3 transverse sectional views thereof as seen when looking in the direction indicated by the arrows from the broken lines 6 6 and 7 7, respectively in Fig. 1.
The barrel is to be formed of stock 32-33 and the surrounding hoops. As best shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the forward edge of the stock is held to a drum composed of four expandible and contractible portions 41, C2, 43 and 4A, the attachment being made by a clamp member 45 on drum-section 41, and said clamp member being held against the stock by a spring attachment composed of parts 46 and 47 with a spring 48 interposed between them, said connection extending to and being connected to drum-section 43. The adjustment is such that when the drum sections are contracted to their smallest diameter a suitable opening will be left between clamp 45 and drum-section ll into which the stock 3233 may be easily inserted. When the drum is expanded, however, the clamp will be drawn down tightly against the stock and hold it in place during the succeeding barrel forming operation. The drum in question is carried upon a shaft 51 upon which is a sleeve 52 which is 0p erable by 'a hand wheel 53. The two ends of sleeve 52 are screw threaded, one end having a left hand thread. Mounted upon these threaded portions are cones 54 and 55 to which the drum sections 41, 4:2, 43 and 4A are adjustably connected. The form of connection which I have adopted is shown at the lower left hand portion of Fig. 1, where a cap screw 56 is shown as passing through a slot in cone 54 and entering section 42 of the drum. Obviously, as hand wheel 53 is turned in one direction the drum sections will be forced outwardly or expanded; and, when turned in the other direction, they will be drawn inwardly or contracted.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a barrel making machine, of a frame work, a rotary drum mounted therein upon which the barrel shell is to be formed composed of expanding sections, a clamp therein composed of a clamp lip mounted on one of said sections and a spring connection leading therefrom to the opposite section whereby the clamping force is applied as the drum is expanded and released as the drum is contracted.
In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this twenty-second day of January, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and ten.
, GEORGE J. MAYER. [a s.]
