JAMES M. KEEP, OF MONTGLAIR, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 JOANNA N.
' KEEP, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY BANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,540, dated November 14, 1882. Application led September 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t't may concern Beit known that I, J AMES M. KEEP, of Mon tclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Banks; and Ido hereby decla-re that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part ot' this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved toy bank. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view of the same, and Fig.`3 is a rear elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to toy banks or safes for children; and it consists in the improvement in the same hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The body or casing ot' the safe (which may be ot' any suitable size) is made of cast metal in two parts or halves, A and B, the former representing` the front and the latter the back part. I'prefer to make these parts with concave corners a ct and .feet or supports b I), and in the top where the two parts A and B come together is a slit or narrow opening, C, through which money is deposited into the box or receptacle below. The back B is cast with a threaded boss, D, adapted to receive the screwthreaded end ot'a bolt, E, by which the front and back parts, A and B, are united or held together. The forward end of this bolt, where it bears against the front, has a shoulder or offset, e, forming a projecting headed hub or spindle, F,t'or the wheel or disk G. The back B 'may have a hinged door, B', provided with a lock and key or other suitable fastening, by means ot' which access may be had to the inierior ofthe sal'e.
Upon the top ofthe safe,on its front part,is fastened, by a screw or otherwise, an ornament, H, the front part of which forms a. downward-projecting point-er, I, which projects out a snfcient distance from the front wall of the safe to permit the wheel orgdisk G to revolve freely upon its fixed hub or spindle F.
In the present illustration of my invention, I have shown the wheel or disk G constructed as a wheel of fortune,77 with numerals arranged around its periphery. The disk or wheel is rotated, and a number of pennies, corresponding to the numeral indicated by the pointer when the wheel stops, is to be dropped into the bank; but I do not confine myself to any particular design or construction ofthe rotating disk G, which may be either in the nature of a solid disk or of a wheel with spokes, and may be ornamented in any suitable manner, and lettered or figured in a variety ot ways appropriate to the purpose of its application-viz., in some way to connect or associate the pleasure the child derivesfrom working the wheel or disk with the idea of depositing something in the bank to which therotating device appertains, and thus inculcate a taste and desire tor saving. A
Havingthus described my invention, I desire it understood that I do not conne or limit myself to the precise construction and combination of parts as herein shown and described 5 but What i claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. 'Ihe combination, with a toy bank or safe, ot' a rotary disk orV wheel rotating upon a fixed hub or spindle projecting from the front wall ot' the safe, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. As an larticle ot' manufacture, a toy bank or safe having' a disk or wheel, suitably inscribed or ornamented, journaled upon a hub or spindle projecting from the front wall ot' the safe, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth. t
3. The combination of the toy bank, the pointer, and theI rotary disk or wheel, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set fort-h.
4. The satc composed ofthehalves or parts A and B, having slot C in the top, the ornament H, having the pointer I projecting down over the front side ofthe safe, the connecting-bolt E, having annularshonldereand headed hub F, and the rotating device G,journaled upon said hub, all constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
