- This invention relates to gas burner tips or head construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a burner tip or head wherein the gaseous mixture to be ignited will take a swirling motion to insure the effective operation of the burner.
- An important object of the invention is to provide a burner body of substantially frusto-conical shape and hollow in which a short tubular insert is placed, the short tubular insert cooperating with the burner body in providing an efiective burner tip or head.

This invention relates to gas burner tips or head construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a burner tip or head wherein the gaseous mixture to be ignited will take a swirling motion to insure the effective operation of the burner.
An important object of the invention is to provide a burner body of substantially frusto-conical shape and hollow in which a short tubular insert is placed, the short tubular insert cooperating with the burner body in providing an efiective burner tip or head.
An important object of the invention is to provide a burner including a substantially coneshaped body or main section and an insert tube provided with spirally formed grooves cooperating with the inner surface of the main burner section in forming spiral passageways, through which gas flows in providing the pilot flame, the spiral passageways causing the pilot gases to take a swirling path of travel when they emerge from the burner and are ignited resulting in a swirling flame to effectively accomplish the purpose for which a pilot burner is provided.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a burner including a hollow frusto-conical shaped body or main section having the inner surface of the hollow body disposed in a straight line, throughout its length, and cooperating with straight wall portions of a tip mounted therein, securing the tip within the body, the tip having inwardly inclined outer lower edges cooperating with the wall of the body or main section of the burner, in providing a passageway for the pilot gases directing the pilot gases to spirally formed grooves which cause the gases to take a swirling motion when they are liberated from the burner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a pilot burner constructed in accordance with the invention, the inner section or short tubular insert of the burner being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the burner.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the burner.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the burner comprises a burner body 5 which is hollow and substantially frusto-conical in shape, with a substantially straight wall section 6, disposed adjacent to the burner end of the body.
Disposed within the body 5, is the substantially short tubular insert section I, the outer surface of which is substantially straight throughout a portion of its length, the straight surface merging into the inwardly inclined surface 8, thereby providing a compartment 9 or passageway wide at its lower end and tapered to a narrow upper section ID.
The straight outer surface of the insert section 1 is formed with spaced parallel grooves H, which grooves are curved as clearly shown by Fig. l of the drawing, to provide parallel curved passageways that have their outer ends open to the atmosphere, while the inner ends of the passageways or grooves II are open to the compartment Or passageway 9, so that the gaseous mixture passing into the body 5 will find its way into the spaced parallel grooves causing the gaseous fuel to be emitted in a swirling form, which when ignited, results in a swirling blaze to insure the effective operation of the burner with which the pilot burner is used.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, the flame which is caused by the burning of gas at the burner tip, will take a swirling motion to spread over a much larger area than would be possible with a burner wherein the gas is emitted in a vertical line. It is further pointed out that with gases having a low hydrogen content, the gases will be broken up to promote combustion at the burner tip, avoiding what is commonly known as sticking pilot flames.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A gas burner comprising a frusto-conical body portion presenting a large gas inlet end and a small outlet end, a tubular insert section fitted within the small end of the body portion, the outer surface of the tubular insert being beveled towards the large end of said body throughout substantially one-half of the length of the tubular insert section presenting a wide gas chamber with the wall of said body, the tubular insert section above the beveled surface thereof having spirally formed grooves providing spiral passageways establishing communication between :said wide chamber and atmosphere.
