H. HARRIS. PICTURE FRAME.
N0. 266,814. Patented Oct. 31, 1882.
Entree STATES A'IENT rrtce HORACE HARRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PICTURE-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,814, dated October 31, 1882.
(No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Beit known that I. HORACE HARRIS,0f New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Frames, of wh ch the following is a specification.
My invention relates to picture-frames made from wire, wherein with one or more pieces of wire I produce a frame, usually for small pictures, that is neat, convenient, usually expansive for pictures varying in size, and always in readiness for use, and at a very low price providing for hanging'on the wall many beautit'ul pictures, which from their small size are not usually trained, as ordinary frames for small pictures are not elegant; and itconsists in the devices substantially as hereinafter specified.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 show different arrangements of the devices accomplishing the purposes ot my invention.
In my construction I take a piece of wire, A, and bend it sothat itshall form at different places in at'ranie two or more parts or portions, 13, between which the picture 0 may he inserted and be held when the frame is hung up. These holding portions may be variously arranged and accomplish the same purpose. In Fig. 1 these parts B are made by bending a ring; form in the wire, leaving twoparts on the inside of the frame lying on each other, between which the picture is inserted. There may be any number of these rings.
The sections of wire between the rings making the holders B may in some cases be straight, and pictures wil hout glassor back may be bent and sprung into the holders; but usually my frames will be made expansible to provide for pictures varying; in size, and also furnished with a glass and back. 'Ioprovide for this expansion, as shown in F1 31, I make donblings D in the wire between the holders B, and these may be expanded or contracted to suit different-sized pictures.
Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the doublings D provide for holding the picture, and also for varying the size. The doublings are thrown one forward and the other back alternately, and the picture 0 is caught between the alternate sections.
Among other forms in which the holders and the expansive feature may be brought out I will name one, as shown in Fig. 3, where two pieces of wire are taken and in part twisted.
together, leaving portions F untwisted and lying on each other, which are divided to form the holders B for receiving and retaining the pictures; and these holders also provide the doublings 1) for expansion and contraction; but the change of size may be otherwise variousl y provided for.
At the top of the frame the wire is bent into some suitable form, making a loop or ring, G, by which the frame may be hung up.
The wire, in whole or in part, may be flattened, and in some instances make a more dosirable frame; and the wires may be worked together like lazy-tongs, making an expansionframe, and be variously ornamented by moderate or elaborate additions within the provisions of my invention.
I claim 1. A wire picture-frame, A, having the holders B and doubling's D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A wire picture-frame, A, having the doublings I), said doublings being also made to serve as holders, substantially as and for the purpose named.
HORACE HARRIS.
