1 Claim.
This invention relates to bucksaws and more particularly to a foldable bucksaw especially useful in camping and similar activities, and a carrying case for carrying the saw when in folded condition.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide an improved foldable bucksaw which can be folded to a compact condition and placed in a carrying case or bag for convenient transportation and storage; in which the frame of the saw completely encloses and protects the saw blade when the saw is in folded condition; which can be quickly and easily unfolded and conditioned for use; and which is simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture, convenient and effective in use, and neat and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claims in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a bucksaw illustrative of the invention when the saw is in condition for use; 7
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a portion of the saw in partly folded condition;
Figure 3 is an edge elevational view of a compression bar constituting an operative component of the saw;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the portions of the saw illustrated in Figure 2 when in completely folded condition;
Figure 5 is a transverse cross sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a carrying case for the saw when in folded condition.
With continued reference to the drawing, the saw comprises, in general, a frame In and a blade II.
The frame I comprises substantially straight, elongated end members I2 and I3 each having a longitudinally extending groove, as indicated at I4 and I respectively, in one edge thereof, a tension linkage I6 connected between the end members I2 and I3 at corresponding ends of the latter, and a compression bar I! extending between the end members intermediate the length thereof and substantially parallel to the tension linkage I6. The saw blade I I has saw teeth I8 along one edge thereof and is pivotally connected at its respectively opposite ends to the frame end members I2 and I3 at the ends of these end members remote from the tension linkage I6, as indicated at I9 and 20.
The tension linkage I6 includes a link 2I pivotally connected at one end to the frame end member I2 by a ring bolt and eye connection 22, a turnbuckle 23 pivotally connected at one end to the other end of the link 2I by an eye connection 24, a link 25 connected at one end to the otherend of the turnbuckle by an eye connection 26 and detachably connected at its other end to the frame end member I3 by means including a hook and eye connection 21. When the frame end members I2 and I3 are disposed in spaced apart and substantially coterminous relationship with the compression bar I! extending therebetween and the tension linkage I6 connected between the ends of the frame members remote from the saw blade II, tightening the turnbuckle 23 will place the saw blade II under tension in a manner well known to the art.
When the saw is in its operative condition, as
illustrated in Figure 1, the groove I4 in the end member I2 is disposed in the inner edge of this end member and the groove I5 in the end member I3 is disposed in the outer edge of the corresponding end member.
The compression bar I! has plates or ears 28 and 29 secured to one end thereof and disposed one at each side of the bar and projecting outwardly from the adjacent end of the latter and similar plates 30 and 3I secured thereto at its opposite end, one on each side of the bar and projecting outwardly from the corresponding end of the bar. These plates are notched in their outer ends, as indicated at 32 and 33 in Figure 1, and the frame end members I2 and I3 are provided with pins 34 and 35 respectively, extending transversely therethrough and projecting from the opposite sides thereof intermediate the length of the end members. The pins 34 and 35 are seated in the notches 32 and 33 in the compression bar end plates when the bar is in 'position, as illustrated in Figure 1, and retain the bar in proper position relative to the end members. The bar is removable from the end members by simply moving the and members away from the corresponding ends of the bar when the tension linkage I6 has been loosened.
In order to fold the saw, the turnbuckle 23 is first loosened and the hook and eye connection 21 separated to release the tension linkage I6 from the end member I3 of the saw frame. The end members I2 and I73 are then moved apart and the compression bar I! removed from the frame. The blade I I is then swung relative to the end member I2 about the pivotal connection I9 until the back side of the blade is received in the groove I4 in the inner side of the end memher [2. The end member I3 is then swung around its pivotal connection 20 with the blade until the toothed edge of the blade is received in the groove I in the end member l3, as shown in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawing. When the end members 12 and I3 are moved together until their grooved edges are in contact, the saw is completely enclosed in the grooves 14' and I5, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. After the end members l2 and 13 and, the saw blade-l1 have been folded together to the condition illustrated in Figure 4, the tension linkage l6 and the compression bar I! are positioned alongside the end members and the assembly is inserted in: the
carrying case, generally indicated at 3 I'ahd illustrated in Figure 6. i 5
The carrying case or bag 31 is .an elongated receptacle of rectangular cross sectional shape 2,667,195 if ii 4 gated compression bar, elongated end members disposed one at each end of said compression bar and each detachably connected intermediate its length of said compression bar, a saw blade disposed between said end members substantially parallel to said compression bar and pivotally connected at its respectively opposite ends to the corresponding ends of said end members, and an adjustable length tension linkage disposed between said end members at the side of said compression barremotef'rom said saw blade and having one end pivotally connected to the end of one of said end members remote from said 7 blade and having the other end detachably connected to the end of the other of said end memhers-remote from said blade, said end members and said saw blade being of substantially the same length and said end members having lonformed of a suitable material, such as'heavycanvas, and has one end arcuately curved convexly and provided with a slidefastener 38. When the saw is folded-and placed :in the case,
it can be conveniently carriedina vehicle, such as an automobile, canoe/or boat, or even ona back-pack, if desired, as the saw may be made of small size and light weight, and the saw can be quickly removed from the carrying case and assembled in its. operative condition for. use, when desired.

A fol-dable saw assem-bly ompri sing an' elon gitudin'ally extending grooves therein receiving said saw blade when said end members are disconnected from'said cornpression bar and ,said tension linkage andfoldedrelative to said blade about the connections-betweensaid end members and said saw blade, one of said end members having its blade receiving groove in theedge thereof nearest the adjacent end of said compression bar and the. other of said end members having. its blade receiving groove in the edge thereof remote from the. adjacent end of said compression bar and each of said grooves havingfa depth substantially equal" to one half the width. of said saw blade.
