1 Claim. 1

The present invention relates to clothes hangers and more-particularly to clothes hangers used in connection with dresses, blouses, slips and similar garments.

It is one of the objects of the invention to provide means facilitating adjustable retaimnent of skirts, slips and like garments below the regular coat garment hanger. Still another object of the present invention is to provide means affording inexpensive manufacture, simple assembly and efficient operation of garment hangers, whereby the smooth garment engaging upper and lateral surfaces of the garment hanger remain unaltered and unobstructed and do not interfere with the garment placed thereon.

These and other objects and features will become apparent from the following detailed description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 shows a garment hanger embodying the invention, part of the garment hanger being shown in section;

Fig. 2 is a cross section taken along lines A--A of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 shows a garment hanger similar to that of Fig. 1, further embodying the invention in a somewhat modified form;

Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along lines B-B; and

Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken along lines C--C of Fig. 3.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a garment hanger I, such as for a coat, which has a hook H! for supporting the garment hanger. The garment hanger has arcuately curved arms and is provided at the underfaces thereof and at opposite ends with longitudinal slots 2 of predetermined profile. Movable within slots 2 and to and from opposite ends of the arms of hanger l, are skirt holding members 3. These holding members 3 are provided with hooks 4, which face each other as seen in Fig. 1. The outer ends of the longitudinal slots or grooves 2 are obstructed by suitable plug elements 5 to thereby limit the movement of holding members 3 in outward direction.

As can be seen in Fig. 2, the holding member 3 and the slots or grooves 2 are provided with interengageable formations (in the example shown, holding member 3 is provided with a dovetail shaped end or tongue and the slot 2 is dovetailed in cross section), so that the members are positively guided within the grooves or slots 2 and without interfering with the normal function or operation of coat or garment hanger I.

As can be further seen from Fig. l, a skirt ll may be retained between holding members 3 or a slip [2 may be retained. on. hooks 4' or holding. member 3 by means of the holder straps of the slip.

The advantage of the garment hanger of this improved structure is that although the holding members 3 are readily slidable along grooves 2, they may be adjusted in their position upon engagement with a skirt or slip or similar garment as the case may be, and retained in this position by the weight or stretch of the respective garment engaged by the holding members 3, which in turn are somewhat canted to prevent further movement along slots or grooves 2.

Fig. 3 shows a garment hanger B with a hook l0 and with hook-shaped members 8 which are movable along guide elements 1, provided at the underface of garment hanger 6. These guide elements I carry at the outer ends, pins or similar elements 9 whereby the outward movement of the hook-shaped members 8 is limited.

In this particular instance, the guide elements 1 are substantially cylindrically shaped in cross section (see Fig. 5) and the hook-shaped members 8 are provided with correspondingly shaped grooves embracing the cylindrical guide elements I to thereby obtain interengageable formations between the holding members 8 and garment hanger body 6. The hook-shaped holding members 8 thus slidably engage the cylindrical elements '1, as may be well understood.

It will thus be seen that there has been provided in accordance with this invention, a garment hanger for coats, suits and the like, in the underface of which there are incorporated additional holding members for garment parts, which members are so disposed and adjustable on the garment hangerproper that they do not interfere with the latter and will not damage or in any way mar the garments placed on the arcuate shaped arms of the garment hanger.

The lengthwise movement of the hook-shaped garment holding members is limited in outward and inward directions along the underface of the garment hanger. The interengageable formations forming the sliding mechanism for the holding members is arranged within the confines of the garment hanger proper. The holding members are readily adjustable and independent of each other in position due to the particular interengageable formations employed.

It can thus be seen that there has been provided according to the invention, a garment hanger structure comprising two substantially downwardly curved arms for supporting a garment thereon, each of said arms being provided with an underface, additional garment holding members disposed for movement along predetermined portions of the underface of said arms, respectively, and interengageable formations, respectively, provided within the confines of said underfaces of said arms and of said holding members, whereby the latter may be moved substantially lengthwise and below said'arms and retained in position thereon upon loading said holding members, so that pressure angularly to said interengageabie formations is exerted.

Although the invention has been explained with respect to certain embodiments thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto and is capable of modifications without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

A garment hanger structure comprising two substantially downwardly curved arms for supporting a garment thereon, each of said arms being provided with an underface, downwardly diverging garment holding members disposed'for sliding movement along predetermined portions of the underface of said arms, respectively, and interengageable formations, respectively, provided on said'underfaces of said arms and on said holding members, said interengageable formations being constituted by grooves extending from the underfaces of said arms into the latter and by tongues provided on said holding members, respectively, said tongues being of such reduced dimensions with respect to said grooves and with respect to the remainder of said holding members that said tongues normally move with play in said grooves, whereas when pressure is exerted angularly to said holding members upon loading same through engagement with a garment piece the holding members are canted to thereby brake the latter in desired positions with respect to said grooves of said arms.
