1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a can tapper and liquid dispenser unit and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed,
Generally there is provided a device which is unitary in character and which is equipped to be forced into the top of a can containing, for example, lubricating oil and, when so inserted, to latch thereto by means of a handle portion forming a part of the invention. There is also provided as a part of the unit a pump mechanism having a handle which is operable by the thumb of the hand grasping the first-named handle and which pump is equipped with a novel safety valve whereby oil or the like :may not be spilled from the can in the event of an accidental tipping thereof but which permits the passage of oil when the same is pumped from the can. Another novel feature of the invention is the disposition of the pump within the can so that a maximum quantity of fluid may be dispensed therefrom.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a novel unitary can punch and liquid dispenser mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet eective and eicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for attaching the same to a can.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel safety valve forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View, partly broken away, of an embodiment of the invention, Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view, partly broken away, taken along line 3 3 of Figure l,
Figure 4 is a plan View of a pattern fitting forming a part of the invention,
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken along line 5 5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the device forming the present invention,
Figure '7 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, of the device shown in Figure 6,
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating certain valves forming a part of a pump constituting a part of the invention, and
Figure 9 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View, partly in elevation, illustrating a safety valve forming a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a unitarycan punch and dispenser unit comprising an elongated hollow cylindrical pump housing IQ cut on a bias at its lower end to provide a punch blade, as indicated at II, and having affixed adjacent its upper end an angularly disposed plate I2 to the outer end of which there is hinged, as indicated at I3, a supporting handle generally indicated at I4.,
The inner end of the handle I4 extends" downwardly, as indicated at I5, whereby to abut an upper portion of a dispensing can I5 when used in connection therewith. The handle I4 is provided with an inner serrated face, as indicated at il, and the lower end has integrally formed therewith an upwardly extending latch hook I8 which is adapted to engage beneath the lower rim of the can I6.

Slida-bly extending through the cap I9 and downwardly into thehousing IIB is an elongated plunger rod 2| having a valved piston generally indicated at 22 at the lower end thereof. The piston 22 is provided with an apertured head 23 of leather or the like, the aperture 24 thereof being governed by a ball valve 25 seated thereon by a compression spring 25 mounted in the piston head 22 and controlling outwardly extending passages 21. An inlet valve structure, generally indicated at 28, is mounted in the lower end of the housing Ill and consists of a body 29 having a centrally disposed opening 3i? extending therethrough in which opening is seated a ball valve 3l urged to its seat by a compression spring 32 mounted in the body 23.
The can I Ii is conventionally supplied with an indented cover 33 and an indented bottom 34. A rocker rivet 35 is affixed to the plate I2 and serves as a pivotal point for a lever of the bell crank type having an inner arm 36 which is connected by means of nuts 3l or the like to the upper end of the plunger rod 2l and an outer operating arm 31.
An outlet fitting 38 extends from the upper portion of the housing I0 and has connected thereto a flexible tubing 39 having a spout 40 at its outer end. The inner end of the fitting 38 is normally closed by a ysafety valve 4I which is afxed to the plunger 2I by means of a collar 42 and a compression spring 43 surrounds the lar washer 41 adjacent its peripheral edge and,
likewise atop the same.
In operation, it will be apparent that when it is desired to dispense the contentslof a can IB,
it is only necessary to grasp the ydevice'.'forni'ing the present invention and which is illustrated,
for example, in Figure 6 of the drawings 4and thereafter to force the `same downwardly upon the cover 33 through an opening 48 definedbyl the inner edges of the washer 46 so that the housing...l0 will. extendtherethrough and the blade` Il thereof. act'to puncture thel cover 33.

It will likewise be seen that since the housing l0 is angul'arly disposed with relation to the plate I2 that when the plate I2 comes t0 rest upon the upper end of the can as aforesaid and as shown in Figure 7, for example, that the forward lower end of the housing l0 constituting the. blade I l will rest in one cornerof the can I6 whereupon when the can is tilted lforwardly toward the tting 38 the maximum amount of .fluid contained within the can i6 may be dispensed therefrom.
While but one form of the invention has been shownrland described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modificationsk may be made without departingnfrovrn ,the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What 'is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising, in, combination witha can, an Velongated hollow cylindricall pump housing, a can-punching blade formedon the lower end of said housing, a plate xed to thetop of said can, a felt washer centrally jaixed to the upper face of said pattern` and adapted to receive said housing therethrough, and a felt washer eccentricallyl aflixed to said pattern and adapted to receive said vent punch therethrough.
