Application January 31, 1946; Serial No. 644,637
(Cl. 222. s2)
4; Claims; 1.
This invention relates to a pail pump and particularly to a detachable pail pump adapted to piercean initially sealed container or pail filled with lubricating oil; grease or some-other fluid.
It is an object of the invention to provide a pump for a container of fluid which is provided with a piercing device and a pump handle.
It is'anotherobject of the invention to provide a pail pump havingapump. handlewhich is movable to a position wherein itmay be used as a carrying handle;
With these and other objects in view, my invention consistsinthe construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device whereby the objects contemplated are attained; as hereinafter more fully'set forth, pointed. out in my claims and illustrated in the. accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig; I is a view partially insection oi. my pail pump inserted in a container filled .with ,fluld', the dotted lines showing'th'e handle in the. carrying position; and
Fig; 2 is an enlargedpartial sectionallview'of the piston and check valve of the pump.
Referring specifically to. the: drawing for a detailed. description of the. invention numeral I-I designates. a sealed container or pail for a fiuid I2 such as lubricating oil. The container I2 is, for example, a five gallonlubricant container.
A pump, generally indicated at I3, comprises a body portion l4 having a screw clamp I5 at its side to clamp the pump on the container I2 after a hollow sharp piercing member l6 has pierced the top of the container I2 and had its opening positioned near the bottom of the pail, so that all the liquid may be pumped out.
The body portion I4 is provided with a passage II communicating at its lower end with the hollow piercing member I6 and at its upper end with a horizontal passage I8 which forms a cylinder for a piston I9. The piston I9 i pivotally connected at 2| to a link 22 which is in turn pivotally connected at 23 to a handlemember 24. The bodyportion I4 also has a spring pressed check valve 25 positioned at the outlet end of the cylinder I 8. The valve 25 comprises a stationary plate 26 having an opening 21 therein and a movable valve plate 28 which is pressed against the stationary plate 26 by a spring 29. The entire valve assembly is held in position by a threaded plug 3| so that the valve may be easily removed and repaired or replaced if necessary. The plug 3| is provided with an internally threaded opening 32 to which is attached a flexible outlet hose 33. If desired, a suitable lubricating fitting 34 may be provided on the end of the hose.
A container" of this type containing lubricating 2 oil' orgrease must be carried; from place-to place around an automobile that is being lubricated. The handle 24' is pivoted at 35 and is movable to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1' so that the container and pump maybe easily-carried around. Thehandl'e 24, when in the carrying position, engages shoulder 36 on pump body I4 and orients the angular position of the container II in a predetermined position, preferably" upright or' substantially vertical; The piston I9 and cylinder I8 are of sufiicient length thatthepiston does not slip out of the cylinder when the handle is in the carrying position. Itwillalso' benoted that when the container H is being carried by handle 24, the handle does not impose-on piston I9- any force which is in a direction transverse to' the axis or the piston. This is because the handle 24 is pivoted to thepump body I4 and is pin connected to the-piston I9 by means of link-'22 and pins 2| and 2-3;
When-the handle 24 is in the pumping positionas-shown in Fig. 1, and is reciprocated, lubricant orgrease is-drawn' up through thehollow piercing member I 6 into the passagel'l and cylinder l 8 and is forced out through the valve 28 into the passage 32-and hose 33 on the discharge stroke of the piston.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided an improved pump for an initially sealed container of lubricant, grease or other liquid, which is particularly adaptable for carrying from place to place by means of the pump handle which is readily movable to a convenient pump carrying position.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scone.
I claim as my invention:
1. A hand pump for a portable initially sealed container of fluid comprising a body portion, a hollow sharp piercing member attached to the body portion and adapted to pierce the top of the container, a clamping means for retaining the pump in position on the container, a piston, a cylinder for the piston and a discharge valve all in said body portion, an outlet conduit connected to said body portion, a handle for the pump connected to said piston, means including a pivotal connection affording movement of said handle to a substantially vertical carrying position, wherein movement thereof does not efiect pumping, or
to a substantially horizontal pumping position, wherein reciprocating movement thereof effects pumping of the fluid from the container, and a shoulder on said body portion adapted to engage the handle when said handle is in the substantially vertical carrying position, whereby when the container is carried by means of the pump handle, said pump handle engages said shoulder and orients said container in a predetermined position without imposing any forces on said piston in a direction transverse to the axis of said piston.
2. A hand pump for a portable initially sealed container of fluid comprising a body portion, a hollow sharp piercing member attached to the body portion and adapted to pierce the top of the container, a clamping means for retaining the pump eccentrically in position on the container, a. piston, a cylinder for the piston and a discharge valve all in said body portion, an outlet conduit connected to said body portion, a handle for said pump, means for connecting the handle to said piston comprising a link pivotally attached to the handle and said piston, said handle also being pivotally attached to said body portion, said pivotal connection affording movement of said handle to a substantially vertical carrying position or to a substantially horizontal pumping position, and a shoulder on said body portion adapted to engage the handle when said handle is in the substantially vertical carrying position, whereby, when the container is carried by means of the pump handle, said pump handle engages said shoulder and orients said container in a predetermined position.
3. A hand pump for a portable container of fluid comprising a pump body, means for eccen trically securing said pump body to said portable container, a pump within said pump body, a pump handle, means connecting said pump handle to said pump, pivotal means for connecting the pump handle to the pump body, said pivotal means afiording movement of said pump handle to a carrying position, and said pump body having a shoulder portion adapted to engage the pump handle when said handle is in the carrying position, whereby, when the container is carried by means of the pump handle, said pump handle engages said shoulder and maintains said container angularly oriented in a predetermined position without imposing any forces on said pump in a direction transverse to the direction in which the forces during pumping are ordinarily applied to said pump.
4. A hand pump for a portable container of fluid comprising a pump body, means for eccentrically securing said pump body to said portable container, a pump piston within said pump body, a pump handle, a pivoted linkage connecting said pump handle to said piston, pivotal means for connecting the pump handle to the pump body, whereby reciprocal pivotal movement of the pump handle through a range of positions actuates the piston through said linkage, said pivotal means affording movement of said pump handle to a substantially vertical carrying position, and said pump body having a shoulder portion adapted to engage the pump handle when said handle is in the carrying position, whereby, when'the container is carried by means of the pump handle, said pump handle engages said shoulder and maintains said container in a substantially upright position.
