UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN JOHNSON AND AUGUST JOHNSON, OF FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA.
OIL IN J lECTOlEt.
.Application filed January 13, 1923. Serial No. 612,496.
Our invention relates to an oil injector or grease gun wherein it is desired to force stitutes part of the cover of the containerA with all of the parts readily accessible for repairv or adjustment.
Furthermore, the invention includes a simple form of handle which is provided and made up of a pair of levers, one .of which is pivoted lin a manner to coact with the operating plunger so that, when At-hese handles are engaged. by the operator, the oil can be pumped from the container with one hand very rapidly.
The oil injector is provided with a pair of check valves which are associated with the operating plunger so that one will re-l lease the oil outof the discharge end of the oil injector, while'the other valve is positioned soas to hold the oilwhich has been drawn up from the well of the container and thus -form a check valve so that the plunger will force the oil .adjacentyit out of the discharge end. f
A feature of the invention resides in the.`
positioning of these valves 'in relation to .the` ejecting plunger at the upper part ofv `the oil container and the extending'fo'f the ejecting plunger cylinder across the oil con# tainer cover. `This permits the oil ejector to be used much more easily than. if the pump or plunger were immersed withinthe container.
The invention includes another feature which consistsofmeans associated with the ejecting plunger whereby, as the oil iswith drawn from the reservoir chamber, air` is drawn through the ejecting plunger in a ,manner to drain any oil, which maypass by the plunger end of the ejector, back into the oil reservoir. This` construction elimignates the necessity of any packing' gland and allows the ejecting plunger to be made up so as to freely operate within its cylinder.
In the drawings forming part of this specification Flgure 1 1s a side elevation particularly illustrated 1n cross s ectlon so as to disclose ,theoperating mechanism of our invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the oil injector, a portion of the operating handles being broken away.
The drawings illustrate the oil injector A providedwith anv oill wellor reservoir B which is adapted to contain fluid oil or .soft grease oil. The ejecting mechanism C 1s positioned across the cover 10 for the chamber B. l a j The chamber Bis made 11p/in any suitable shape and may be cylindrical, as illustrated 1n the drawing, with a thin wall 11 and bottom end 12 so as .to provide a suitable container for the oil.
The cover 10 is threaded at 13 to the wall This'cover is provided with 'a cap oro en- .ing closure 14 which permits oilsto be lled into the chamber by removing this cap 14 and without making it necessary to remove the whole cover 10. The cap 14 is of 11 so that it can be removed when desired.v
ordinary well known construction being suitably threaded into the cover 10 and, 'if desired, a gasket placed beneath the Asame so as to make an air tight closure inthe cover. All -of this is of ordinary well known construction and is not illustrated in detail in the drawing.
The ejecting cylinder 15 of the ejecting Y mechanism C is formed as an integral part with the cover 1Q and extends across the same so that, whenthe oil injector A is in upright position, the cylinder 15 extends horizontally across the top. Within thel cylinder 15 is positioned thevoperating piston or plunger 16l which is held in outer posltion 'normally by the .heavy duty coil spring I 17. The coil sprmg l17 engages against the plunger end/18 of the piston and against vthe shoulder 19 formed in the cylinder. Extending through the shoulder 19 is an ejecting passageway`20 through which oil is ejected when the piston l,16 is operated toward the same. On the; discharge end of the passageway 20 avball check valve 21 is positioned, which-isheld in positionby the coil spring 22. The sa e is held in position by the nut $24 which 1s threaded into the end of the piston 15. A suitable passage' bolt oiler in a manner to oil Vthe j'ointsofY an automobile.` Only a portion of the conduit 27 ris illustrated and it is obvious that this can be of any suitable nature with the connections on the end ofthe same so that oily canv be passed from the injector A to cylinder 15.
any point where it is desired for use.
The cylinder 415 is provided with a depending portion 28 in. which is formed a chamber 29 for theV checkvalve 30 which 1s normally held closed by a spring of any suitable type. A nut 31 holds the check valve in position within the chamber 29 and is threaded to ythe member 28 so that the valve can be removed, if desired. A passageway 32 leads from the chamber 29 into the compartment in which the end of the plunger or piston 16 extends and 1n which the s ring 17 is positioned.
Connecte to the nut 31 in any suitable manner is the suction pipe 33 whichV extends to the bottom portion of the chamber B of c the injector A. This pipe is provided with an ordinary-screen 34 covering its lower intake end so as to filterv the oil or grease drawn up through the pipe 33 by the action of the piston 16.
A pair of operating lever handles lare provided and are removably connected by the lead engagement 35 to one end of the ne of the operating handles Y k36is formed integral with the body portion 37 which is attached at 35 yto the cylinder 15 so as to extend ri idly from the cylinder. The other handle o the. pair 38 is pivoted "at 39 between two spaced lugsasf shown and is formed with a depending lug 40 which engages against the outeri free lend 41 of the piston or plunger 16. The heavy duty coil spring 17 holdslthe end 41 in engagement with the lugf 40 at all times and -normally forces the lug 40 against the lug` 42 upon the integral operating handle when the piston is in outer position.
An annular recess or groove 43 is formed back of' the plunger end 18 in the piston 16 which communicates with a"passageway 44 leading into the chamber B of the injector, while a small hole' or passageway 45- is formed in the piston connecting with tha outer atmosphere and the annular recess 43 and the chamber formed thereby in the cylinder 15. By means of this construction,
lair? isk admitted through the passageways 45 and 44 into the compartment or reservoir "B, as the oil or grease in the same 'is pumped' or drawn out by the action of the piston 16.
In this manner, any/oil or grease which may.v
pass beyond' the plunger end of the \pistonj 16 toward its outer free end 41 is drained and sucked back through the passageway 44 into the reservoir chamber B, thereby providing a means of preventing any leakage of oil at the outer free end of the piston 16.
In operation, our oil injector or grease discharger A is formed and adapted to operate to provide a high pressure injector. Due to the leverage of the operating handles 36 and 38 the plunger or piston 16 can be operated very rapidly so as to reciprocate back and forth within the cylinder 15 forcing the oil in front of the said piston valve 21 to the discharge end or conduit 27 on its forward stroke, drawing oil past valve 30 through the pipe 33 on its backward stroke so that the chamber in cylinder 15 wherein the heavy duty spring 17 is positioned is filled "with oil or grease on the backward stroke of the piston. When the handles 36 and 38 are operated by squeezing them together, the piston forces the oil with a great deall of pressure owing to the leverage of the handles, and the heavy' duty spring acts rapidly enough to bring the handles back into open position -ready to be operated again. In this manner, the injector A can be.I operated very rapidly withone hand. `The handles 36 and 38 can be of any suitable length to provide the desired leverage. The check valve 21 prevents oil, even though it is ejecting out under pressure,f from entering back into the chamber containing the spring 17 and the check valve 30 prevents resides in the simple, inexpensive construe)- tion with all of the parts accessible so that they can bel replaced, repaired, or cleaned when desired. .The arrangement of the parts and the positioning of thejcylinder 15 ermits a direct and easy use lof the injector so as to effectively pump oil or grease under high pressure. to any- 'desired point where it is wanted for use.
The novelI feature, admitti ng air to take l the place of the grease withdrawn from the compartment `B and to automatically draw any leakage past the operatingend of the plunger back into vthe reservoigri compart-l '.ment is a very importantfeature of the invention. This construction permits the piston 16 to be so seated as tooperate freely and thus the handles can be o erated so rapidly as to reciprocate the piston" back and forth much more easily than if `it were packing.
