Patented Nov. 24, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR-HOLDING EYEBROW OR GRAY HAIIR PENQIL m1 J. tarnis Marshal, 91 11) Application March 21, 1952, Serial N0. 27'L324 5 Claims. (Cl. 13,2?11) Th invention re ates to a devic attaohab to a conventionally io med hair comb, an adapted by reason of ts pa ticular c nstruction .for up orting a plurality oi ey brow pencils o pencils used to color ray hair f rhe PHFDO E ,of

."Eyebrow pencils and grayhair pencils are both well known, and are widely used. owever, t i
difiicult to apply said pencils to a particular location in a, manner whereby the pencils will be held steady and directed alon the des d path.
Accordingly, it is the broad obje t of h present invention to provide a means adapted to support one or more eyebrow or gray hair pencils,
and to permit said pencils to be guided steadily along desired paths.
Anotherimportant object is to provide a means DI the character referred-to which, if desired, can be used for penciling eyebrows, and which is at v the same time so formed as to hold a series of grayhair pencils in a particular position relative to; the teeth .01 a conventional hair comb, whereby to permit said gray hair pencils to color or disguise gray hairs when the comb is drawn over the scalp in the usual manner.

resent invention includes a clip des nated gene-rally. by the reference numeral l 5,.said .cl-i-p being ,of integral formation and being readily vformed from a single blanket flat metal material.
Alternatively, the clip, as will appear from the description to be provided hereinafter, can .be
znolded of plastic or the like, and it is :to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims, I donot desire to 'be limited to any particular materials.
In any event, theclip 16- includes a flat genorally rectangular plate l8 adapted to be positioned along one side of the comb, in a manner particularly well illustrated in Figure l and-in Figure 3. The plate 18, along one longitudinal edge thereof, is formed with a flange 20, that extends fully from end toend of the plate in the preferred'embodiment of the invention.
The flange 20 is so formed as to engage over the back piecel-Z of the comb (Figure 3'), and to this end is formed to a hooklike, cross-sectional configuration.
At opposite ends of the plate I8, I cut the plate inwardly as at 22, to provide portions that are io dable inward y owa d one another to m end flanges 24. flhe end an es 24, like the back piece-engaging dance 20, are of hools like cross- -se on, said end flan es ein adapted for eneasement about selected. spac d teeth 1 .0.15 th haircom a pe oihenppine means has heendesignated re at 2. andindndes one ormore penci I sliphort'fmembers each or wh h. oi integra ormation, pencil support snembe sarepf like construction, and hence, the description of one will sufiice for all.
Each pencil support member includes an elongated, straight, intermediate portion 28 that extends laterally from the plate (8 (Figure 3) and is disposed obliquely to the plane of the plate. At their inner ends, the pencil support members are formed with fiat end portions 30 integral with the intermediate portions, said fiat end portions being positioned against the outer surface of the plate l8 and being connected to said plate by means of rivets 32 extending through openings 34 formed in the plate.
At their outer ends, the respective pencil support members are formed with annular, split clamps 36 adapted to extend about and springably grip eyebrow or gray hair pencils 38. The clamps 36, in this connection, are so formed as to have their axes arranged obliquely to the plate I8, and hence to the plane of the series of comb teeth l4. As a result, the pencils 38 gripped by the clamps 36 will also have their axes disposed obliquely, to the plane of the series of comb teeth, for extension of the tips of the pencils into spaces 40 defined between each pair of adjacent teeth of said series.
As will be noted from Figures 1 and 2, the respective clamps 36 are so disposed, relative to one another, as to cause the several pencils 38 to converge in the direction of their tips, this construction being desired for the purpose of causing the tips of the pencils to be spaced sufficiently closely from one another as to be extendable into adjacent spaces 40 of the comb.
It is obvious that if desired, the device can be used for the purpose of supporting only one pencil 38. This might be desirable if, for example, the user is penciling her eyebrows. In any event, and assuming that the eyebrows are being penciled, it is merely necessary that the user draw the comb along the eyebrows, so as to comb the eyebrows while at the same time coloring them.
If the device is being used to support a plurality of gray hair pencils, the pencils are engaged in the clamps 35 in the manner illustrated in Figures 7 of the comb, so as to cause the flanges 24 to be forced laterally into spaces between selected teeth of the comb. As the end flanges 2d are forced into said spaces, they will spread the teeth and will hook about the teeth when the device is in the final position thereof illustrated in Figure 3. In removing the device, the teeth would be manually spread for disengagement of the end flanges It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the 7 means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention The gray hairs guided into said comprehends any minor changes in construction that may be permitted Within the scope of the appended claims.
