Description

F. J. FLOWERS. v
Carnage-Seat, V No. 26,578. Patented Dec. 27, 1859.
Witnesses Inventor AM. PHOTO-LITHO. [20. N.Y. (OSBORNES PROCESs.)
FRANCIS J. FLOWERS, OF RAHWAY, NEWJERSEY.
EXTENSION-SEAT FOR CABRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent 26,578, dated December 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. FLOWERS, of Rahway, in the county of Union, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Extending Drivers Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which I Figure l is the body with my improved seat attached. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5, aresectional views. j
The nature of my invention consists in folding a seat, so that the space occupied by the permanent seat is filled, forming a level surface, to receive its cushion when the extension seat is folded. When open the width of the extension seat is decreased and its height raised, whereby foot and leg room is gained.
To instruct others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make my body N of any of the known forms and frame bar G into rocker D letting it project above seat line E four inches or the thickness of cushion, the top edge of it being in table joint form as shown by J thus forming a recess when the seat is folded to I receive cushion F, and also cushion G, in its turn. I next divide the width of the permanent seat E between the bar H, and seat frame A in such distances to suit the raise of bar H and width of said frame which is to be governed by the shape of the rocker D, connecting bar H and bar C and seat frame which prevents the seat from vsliding ffor- Ward, and p ap 0 through ban-1H into bar G prevents its backward slide. 1,
A with hinges forming the table joint I form my seat frame asjshown Eby Fig ii jj A, A, A, A, A, bevelingbarA, so; as to form the tapered recess I, I tojreceive legs 13, 3,
which are connectedby hinges. Next when trimming I form the boot or hanging cloth as shown by Fig. 5. ,Theobject to enable} it to be folded without injury to the mate- J rial. In constructing it use'any stifi 1113- terial such as patentleather, cuttingflit lasa shown by lines L, L, L, L,jliningfjit wwithu some flexible material, letting itfprojectj above asshown by line M, securethem to} v gether by stitching as shown by the draw;
ing and attachit to the bottomqofthel seatfi: i by margin M thus forming a SBIlGSOf joints j by which you can fold it;
I do not claim extending or folding the 1 i seat A, nor do I claim the hinged legs,
or the boot part K as new, for they are all 3 in use, but
What I do claim 1st as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isjy 1. The operation andcombination ofv the raising bar H vor its equivalent, with the parts A, and G.
2. I claim the combination of the recess p I, I, with the legs B,B. 1 I 3. I claim forming the joints, L, L, L, L,
in combination with theboot for the puti FLOWERS. f
pose set forth.
