WILLIAM G. WATKINS, or WESTON, o1-rr0..
DAVENPORT-CASKET.
1 Application filed Gctober 26, 1918. Serial No. 259,762.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. WAT- nrrzs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Weston, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Davenport-Casket; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to caskets, and has for its object the provision of a casket whlch is adapted to be set up in the form of a sired extent without disturbing the flowers or other articles which may be placed on the top of the casket.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embod ment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a casket embodying my invention set up in davenport form. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one end portion of the casket with parts broken away and illustrating the shoulder adjusting means. Fig. A is a cross section of the casket in closed form, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view thereof with the top slide or panel partly open.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom, 2, 2 the ends, 3 and A the front and rear sides, respectively, and 5 the top of a casket embodying my invention. The
ends 2, 2 fixedly rise from the respective end portion of the bottom 1 and the sides 3 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
relation to the bottom with their hinged ends, shouldering thereunder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus forming supporting members for the casket.
l/Yhen the sides 3, 4: are in raised or closed position, the top 5 rests on the top edges of the ends and sides, as shown in Fig. A, and is movably connected to each end by a link 7, which linkis pivoted at one end to the top and at its other end to the respec tive end 2 of the casket in a manner to permit the top tobe swung rearward and clownward in upright'position at the rear side of the casket withits lower edge adjacent to the lower rear edge of the casket and with its upperedge extending a distance above the ends'2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; The top cannot be swungto open position, however, until the rear side A has been swung downward to'its casket supporting position, as the top when swung to open or upright position takes the closed position of the rear side 4 and rests at its ends against the rear upright edges of the casket ends'2. It is evident that when the sides and top of the casket are in open 'posi tio'n the casket assumes the form of a davenport with the sides acting as the supporting legs or members, the ends 2 acting as the arms at the ends of {)he davenport, and the top 5 acting as the ack.
A shallow ledge or rail 8 rises a short the height of the respective ends 2 to which they ar connected, thus serving as a'brace for the ends. A ledge 10 is provided at the inner side of each rail 8, 9 and rising on such ledges are the side rails 11 of what may be termed a cot or spring frame, which frame fits within the casket between the ends 2, 2 and rail 8, 9 and is covered by a canvas or other suitable covering 12. -A body may be laid directly on this covering or on amattress or other covering, which may be placed thereover. The fr'amell and its covering serve as a cot for supporting the body. In order to facilitate an adjustment of the shoulders of a body to any desired position, which is usually accomframe; atits head portion, is provided with I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts, as it is capable .ahinged'section 13 adapted'to be raised or lowered, and such-section is supported in adjusted elevated position by a rod '14:,
ofnumerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit qf the claims.
which is pivotally attached at one end and sharpened at itsother end to'be forced into 'thelflwooden.bottom 1 ofthe casket at'the.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1; A davenport casket having front and desired positionof adjustment. The cros PIECE/"l5 'at lthe' head 'of th'e'cot frame is hinged at each end tosthe adjacent, section 153 t'of adapt either section 13 to be raised i b Ye he plane of the other, as is apparent '15 .by-referenceto the drawings. f J
- --Theatopf5 is provided With a panel- 16 whieh comprises the major portion of the "top andismortised thereinfor longitudinal j isliding.movements, "the openingmoveinent 550 thereof'bein g toward the footof the casket. I I flhis panel; .on whichgathe lfioral qdecorations-may beplaced, can-be opened to expose thewho le or'only'a portionof a body disposed V within'the casket, or it can be entirely;removed from the top withoutdis V ,turbing the floral decorations thereon. It is [evident thatthe casket can be upholstered in any:-. desired, manner so that it will have an appearanceof a casketwhen in closed or folded form; and Will. have. the appearance ofa -davenport when in "open or unrear portions mounted "for swinging movements to-serve as supports for the casket when in davenport form, and having its top connected vto the casket ends for movement to upright position at the rear of said ends to take the closed position of the rear side and to serve as the back of the davenport. 7
p 2. .A casket having its ends and bottom relatively fixed and its front and rear sides hinged at their lower edges to the bottom portions for outward and downward swinging movements relative thereto to place the sides in inverted upright supporting. relation to the bottom, said casket also having its top connected to. the ends to be placed thereover or to be swung to upright position at the rear of the ends to take the position of the rear side and to extend in davenport back form above the ends.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
