of the various makes and models requiring attaching fastenings which, regardless of size of closer, will pass through holes l6, l1, I8 and H1 without binding or alteration of the closer or bracket pad. Web l may have an opening 24, if desired to avoid unnecessary weight, and an additional rib adds further to the stiffness and stability of the device.
Fig. 2 shows a structure of generally similar type, there being a flange 26 providing openings for screws 2|-21 for firmly attaching the device to the sofiit 2B of a door frame. A web portion 29 having reenforcing ribs 30 and 3| connects flange 26 with a pad 32 providing openings 33, 34, 35 and 36, through which are received fastenings 31, 38, 39 and 40, for mounting thereon the pad 4| of a door closer, in this instance of a comparatively small size. The position of the fasteners 31, 38, 33 and 40 is illustrative of one extreme adaptation of the device to a small closer, while the position shown in Fig. 1 of fastenings 20, 2|, 22 and 23 is illustrative of the other extreme adaptation of the device to a large closer. In either arrangement the closer mechanism is supported on the device, instead of on the door, and a linkage generally designated as 42, Fig. 1, extends to and is fastened to the movable part of the door.
Fig. 3 shows a structure for use where there is insufficient room on the soifit for application of the device of the type of Figs. 1 or 2. In this arrangement there is a relatively large pad or flange 43 which, unlike the embodiments of the previous figures lies in the plane of the inner wall of the building. It provides openings 44-44 which are for the purpose of receiving screws or similar fastenings, not shown, for attaching the device to the inner surface of the building wall. A web portion 45 having ribs 45 and 41 extends downwardly from flange 43 and connects with a pad 48 having openings 49, 50, 5| and 52 essentially similar in position and function to openings 33, 34, 35 and 35 of Fig. 2. Pads 48, H and 32 may be reenforced if desired with additional ribs 53, 54, and 55.
A further modification is shown in Fig. 4 in which an attaching flange 56 is curved in a man nor to fit within the arched portion of a curved door frame 51. Flange 56 is provided with openings for screws 58-58 for solidly attaching it to the frame and has a downwardly extending arm 59 integrally or rigidly attached thereto. Arm 59 has a clamping device of any suitable or well-known type pivotally securing thereto a pad 6| provided with openings 62, 63, 64 and 65 for receiving the fastening devicesof a door closer in the manner described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2. In applying this device, flange 56 is attached to the door frame in the most advantageous position after which, with clamping device 60 loose, pad 6| is swung thereabout until it is in position to support a closer in proper position-commonly with its longer sides horizontal-clamping device 60 being then tightened so as to maintain the parts in adjusted position. If desired flange 56 may be formed with a curve which increases toward the openings for screws 58-58, whereupon it will have a firm bearing on door frames of a variety of different curvatures.
The operation of the variou embodiments of the invention is thought to be clear from the foregoing description, it being apparent that door closers of various sizes and styles can be readily mounted on the devices, and when so mounted will be firmly supported within the building, and
will not swing outside so as to be damaged by the weather, when the door is opened.
The above being a full and exact description of devices embodying the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described a door frame engaging flange portion having means for permanent attachment to a door frame, a connecting web portion forming a supporting arm, extending from said flange portion, and a closer attaching pad carried by said connecting web portion, said pad providing opposed laterally spaced pairs of slotted attaching fastening receiving holes, the holes of each pair being inclined inwardly toward each other from the outer margins of said pad at greater angles than the diagonals of the rectangle defined by the outer margins of said holes each pair of holes extending toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of said pair of holes from such point of intersection of the other holes for receiving fastenings from any one of a variety of sizes and styles of door closers.
2. In a bracket for a door closer to be mounted on a door frame the combination of a flange portion, means for attaching said flange portion within the confines of the door frame, a closer attaching pad of substantially rectangular proportions, a connecting web uniting said flange portion with said attaching pad, said pad providing opposed laterally spaced pairs of fastener rereiving holes in which are received fasteners attaching a door closer to said pad, and said holes being slotted, and the holes of each pair being inclined inwardly from the outer margins of said pad toward each other and the middle of the pad at greater angles than the diagonals of the rectangle defined by the outer margins of said holes each pair of holes extending toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of said pair of holes from such point of intersection of the other holes so as to be capable of receiving fasteners engaged with any one of a plurality of different sizes of door closers.
3. In a bracket for a door closer to be mounted on a door frame the combination of a flange portion, means for attaching said flange portion within the confines of the door frame, a closer attaching pad of substantially rectangular proportions, a connecting web uniting said flange portion with said attaching pad, said pad providing four fastener receiving holes in which are engaged fasteners attaching a door closer to said pad, said holes being slotted and inclined inwardly from adjacent the proximal corners of said pad said holes being inclined toward each other at angles greater than the diagonals of the pad each pair of holes extending toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of said pair of holes from such point of intersection of the other holes toward the middle of the pad so as to receive the fasteners engaged with any one of a plurality of sizes of door closers.
4. In a bracket for a door closer to be mounted on a door frame the combination of an angular flange portion for engagement with an upper and a side surface of a door frame, means for attaching said flange portion to said surface, a closer attaching pad of substantially rectangular proportions, a connecting web uniting said angular flange portion with said attaching pad, said pad providing four fastener receiving holes in which are engaged fasteners attaching a door closer to said pad, said holes being slotted and inclined inwardly from adjacent the proximal corners of said pad said holes being inclined toward each other at angles greater than the diagonals of the pad each pair of holes extending toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of said pair of holes from such point of intersection of the other holes toward the middle of the pad so as to receive the fasteners engaged with any one of a plurality of different sizes of door closers.
5. In a bracket for a door closer to be mounted on a door frame the combination of a pad portion for engagement with an outer surface of adoor frame. means for attaching said pad portion to said outer surface, a closer attaching pad of substantially rectangular proportions, a connecting web uniting said pad portion to said attaching pad, said pad providing four fastener receiving holes in which are engaged fasteners attaching a door closer to said pad, said holes being slotted and inclined inwardly from adjacent the proximal corners of said pad toward the middle of the pad said holes being inclined toward each other at angles greater than the diagonals of the pad each pair of holes extending toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of said pair of holes from such point of intersection of the other holes so as to receive the fasteners engaged with any one of a plurality of different sizes of door closers.
6. In a bracket for a door closer to be mounted on a door frame the combination of an attaching portion for engagement with a portion of a door frame, means for fastening said attaching portion to said door frame, a closer attaching pad of substantially rectangular proportions, a clamping device pivotally connecting said attaching portion with said closer attaching pad, means on said clamping device for rigidly fixing said attaching portion and said closer attaching pad in relatively adjusted positions, said pad providing four fastener receiving holes in which are engaged fasteners attaching a door closer to said pad, said holes being slotted and inclined inwardly from adjacent the proximal corners of said pad toward the middle of the pad said holes being inclined toward each other at angles greater than the diagonals of the pad each pair of holes extending toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of said pair of holes from such point of intersection of the other holes so as to receive the fasteners engaged with any one of a plurality of different sizes of door closers.
7. In a device of the class described a door frame engaging flange portion having means for permanent attachment to a door frame, a connecting web portion forming a supporting arm, extending from said flange portion, and a closer attaching pad carried by said connecting web portion, said pad providing opposed laterally spaced pairs of slotted attaching fastening receiving holes, the holes of each pair being inclined toward each other from the outer margins of said pad, each toward a point of intersection spaced in the direction of the holes, from such point of intersection of the other holes.
