This invention is directed to a shipping .and display carton for elongated articles.

rl'he principal object of this invention is to provide a shipping and display carton wherein elongated articles which may be broken or damaged in shipmentJ such as glass tooth brush holders, plaster pencils and the like, lmay be nrmly held therein for shipment without breakage or damage, wherein the elongated :articles Ymay be securely held during shipment adjacent both ends for protecting them in shipment, wherein the ends of the articles are protected during shipment against breakage or damage, wherein the articles may be attractively displayed for merchandising purposes, wherein the articles are firmly .held during display, wherein a portion yof the carton may be unfolded for attractively displaying the articles, wherein the carton may be readily provided with advertising and display material, wherein the advertising and display material may not :be damaged or marred during a shipment, and wherein the carton may be vreadily and inexpensively manufactured.

In carrying out this object oi the invention the shipping and display carton preferably includes a pair ol boxes for receiving the [elongated `articles and which may be hinged together at one end so that they may be :arranged side by iside for shipping purposes and may be -unfolded toward an end to end position for display purposes. This provides ya compact unit for shipping purposes Aand :a spread unit for display purposes.

Preferably the top surfaces of the boxes are provided with holes for receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles so that the articles are held in proper position and advantageously displayed. The boxes also include a liner having holes for receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles and for engaging and protecting the lower ends thereof. Proper positioning of the lower ends of the articles and protection of the same is thereby afforded.

The shipping and display carton also includes a cover for enclosing the elongated articles :and the pair of boxes -when folded side by side. The cover is also preferably provided with a liner having holes for receiving the upper portions of the articles and engaging the upper ends of the articles. shipment is likewise afforded. `'I'hc cover, used in shipping, not only protects the articles, also protects the advertising and display material Von the boxes.

The boxes, cover-and liner may be inexpensively and readily manufactured 'from blanks, such as cardboard -and 'the like, by folding and securing, and the shipping and display carton may be readily and inexpensively assembled during the packing of the articles.

Further obects of this invention reside in the details of construction of the 'shipping and display carton and the cooperative relationship between the component parts thereof.

Referring first to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 lto 7, the shipping and display carton is generally designated at I6. It includes a pair of boxes II and I2 which are preferably hinged together at one end so that they may be arranged side by side for shipping purposes as illustrated in Figure l, or may be spread toward an end to end position for display purposes as illustrated in Figure 16. The top surfaces of the boxes I I and I2 are provided with holes I3 for receiving the lower ends of elongated articles I 4 such as glass tooth brush holders. The

boxes II and I2 contain liners I5 and I6 respectively, the liners having holes I1 in the top surface thereof for also receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles. The liners are provided with an intermediate surface upon which the lower ends of the articles rest and by which the lower ends of the articles are spaced from the bottom of the boxes. The holes I3 and I1 in the boxes and ythe liners therefore operate to hold 7 i' the lower portions of the elongated articles I4 in a vertical position and the linersyalso, operate to space the lower ends of the articles from the bottom ofthe boxes. Thus, the articles are firmly held for display purposes and for shipping purposes in the boxes II and I2.

A cover I8 is adapted to enclose the articles I4 and the boxes II and I2, and is utilized for shipping purposes. The cover I 8 is provided With .a liner I 9 having holes 20 for receiving the upper portions of the elongated articles I4for securely holdingthem during shipping. The liner I9 is, also, provided with a surface which is spaced `from the top of the cover I 8 and which is engaged by the upper ends of the articles I4 whereby the articles are held spaced from the top of the cover I8 and damage to the ends of the articles is therefore prevented during shipping.

During shipping, the cover I8, the boxes I I 'and I2, and the liners I and I6 and I9 operate to firmly hold the articles I4 and preventl breakage thereof or damage thereto. The cover I8, in addition, operates to protect anyadvertising or displaymaterial which is placed on the boxes II and I2. When the articles are to be displayed the cover I 8 and liner I 9 are removed whereupon the articles I4 are vertically held by the boxes II and I2 and the liners I5 and I6 therein. To add to the attractiveness of the display the boxes II and I2 may be spread about the hinge joint, as is illustrated in Figure 16 and the boxes II and I2 may be provided with suitable advertising for display material. The shipping and display carton thereby provides a compact unit for shipping purposes, but yet allows a spread unit for display purposes.

The boxes I I and I2 may be formed from a blank of material such as cardboard and the blank for the boxes is illustrated in Figure 5. The body portion of the blank IIV is scored to provide a bottom surface 22, a side surface 23, a top surface 24 including the holes I3, a side surface 25 and a securing flap 26. The securing fiap 26 is suitably secured as by adhesive to the bottom surface 22 to form a box like structure. 'Ihe blank is also provided with

21, 28, 29, 30 and 3l which are adapted to be folded over to form the boxes II and I2. In this respect both boxes II and I2 are identical.

One of the boxes such as the box I2 is provided at one end with an additional flap 34 which is adapted to be received in the corresponding end of the other box II as is illustrated in Figure 3. This flap 34 may be frictionally received in the end of the box I I or it may be adhesively secured therein. In any event the flap 34 provides a hinge between the two boxes II and I2 so that the boxes may be arranged side by side as illustrated in Figure 1 for shipping purposes or may be extended toward an end to end position as illustrated in Figure 16 for display purposes.

The blank for the liners I5 and I6 for the boxes II and I2 is illustrated in Figure 7. The blank is scored to form a top surface 36, a side surface 31, an intermediate surface 38 and a side surface 39, and also, a side surface 49, a bottom surface 4I and a side surface 42. The side surface 39 is adhesively secured to the side surface 40 and the side surface 31 is adhesively secured tothe Vside surface 42 as illustrated in Figure 2. "The liner thus formed provides a top surface 36 having the holes I1 for receiving the lower portions of the articles I4, an intermediate surface 38 engaged by the lower ends of the articles I4 and a bottom surface 4I engaging the bottom surface 22 of the boxes Il and I2. The Vblank for forming the cover I8 is illustrated in Figure 4 and it isscored to include a securing flap 44, a front surface 45, a side surface 46, a back surface 41, and a side surface 48.` The iiap 44 is secured to the surface 48 to form a box like construction. The blank also includes iiapsY 49, 50 and 5I which are folded to close the top of the cover. The cover is adapted to enclose the articles I4 and the boxes II and I 2.l To facilitate removal of the cover, the front and back surfaces thereof are provided with cutouts 52V so that the boxes IIV and I2 may readily be grasped during the removal of the cover I8.

The blank for forming the insert I 9 forthe cover I8 is illustrated in Figure 6. It is scored to include a securing flap 54, a surface 55 to be engaged by the upper ends of the articles I4, a side surface 56, a bottom surface 51 including theholes 20 for receiving the upper portions ofthe articles I4 andra side surface 58. The securing iiap 54 is secured to the side surface 58 to form a box like structure. The ends of the surface 55 are provided with flaps 59 and 60 which are adapted to be folded upwardly for the purpose of spacing the surface 55 from the top of the box I8. The surface 55 is also cut to'form ears 6I and 62 which extend upwardly during the folding operation.` These ears also .operate to space the surface 55 from the top of the cover I8. The liner I9 in the cover I8 therefore operates firmly to hold the upper portions of the articles I4 and to maintain the upper ends of the articles I4 spaced from the top of the cover. In this way breakage and damage to the articles I4 is prevented during shipping.

Referring now to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 8 to 12 it includes the same boxes II and I2 and the same cover I8 as in the previous form of theinvention and therefore like referenceV characters have been utilized for like parts. The form of the invention illustrated in Figures 8 to 12 differs from that of Figures 1 to 7 in the specific construction of theY liners for the boxes II and I2 and the liner for the cover I8. The liners for the boxes II and I2 are designated at 1I, 12, and at 13, 14 respectively, and the liner for the cover is designated at 15.

The liners of the boxes Il and l2 are made in two parts instead of one part as in the previous form of the invention. The blank for forming one of the liners 1I is illustrated in Figure 1l and the blank for forming the other liner 'I2 is illustrated in Figure 12. The blank for forming the liner 'II is scored to provide a securing nap 1l, a bottom surface 1B, a side surface 19, a top surface 88 having the holes Il and a side surface 8l. The securing flap 'Il is suitably secured to the side surface BI to form a box like structure.

The blank for forming the liner l2 is scored to provide a securing flap 82, a bottom surface 83, a side surface B4, a top surface 85 and a side surface 86. The securing ap 82 is suitably secured to the side surface 8G to provide a box like structure. The liner 12 is first placed in the box II or I2 with the bottom surface thereof engaging the bottom surface of the box and then the other liner 'II is inserted with the bottom surface thereof engaging the top surface of the liner '12. The function of the liners 1I and 'I2 is the same as the function of the liner I5 of the previous form of the invention.

The blank for forming the liner 'I5 for the cover I8 is illustrated in Figure 10. It is scored to provide a securing flap 88, a top surface 89, a side surface S9, a bottom surface 9i having the holes 20 for receiving the upper portions of the articles I4 and an oversized side surface 92. The securing flap 88 is secured to the side surface 92 to form a box like structure and the side surface 92 extends upwardly above the top surface 9| for the purpose of spacing the top surface 9| from the top of the box I8. The ends of the top surface B9 are provided with flaps 93 and 94 which are also folded upwardly for the purpose of spacing the top surface 89 from the top of the box I3. The top surface 89 is also cut to form an ear 95 which extends upwardly also to space the top surface 89 from the top of the box I8. The function and operation of the liner I5 is the same as the liner I9 of the previous form of the invention.

The forms of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 12 are shown for the purpose of receiving elongated articles such as glass receptacles for tooth brushes. The forni of the invention illustrated in Figures 13 to 15 is illustrated for accommodating other elongated articles such as plaster pencils. However, it should be obvious that any type of elongated article may be suitably accommodated by any of the forms of the invention. Essentially the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 13 to 15 embodies the same elements as the previous forms of the invention. The construction of the boxes I I and I2 is the same as that previously described, the dimensions are somewhat changed and circular holes IBI are utilized in lieu of holes I3 in order to accommodate the cylindrical elongated articles |02 such as plastic pencils. The liners for the boxes are the same as the liners li, l2, 'i3 and 'M with the exception as to dimensions and the provision of round holes E33 for accommodating articles IQZ. The cover I3 is the same in all forms of the invention. The liner ifi-S diiers somewhat from the liners for the covers previously described. In this respect the liner Idd is provided with circular holes I d5 for. receiving the upper ends of the elongated articles H92 and is scored to form a securing flap lill, a top surface |03, a side surface IBS, a bottom surface I It) and a side surface III. The securing flap IIJl is secured to the side surface Ill to provide a box like structure. The topsurface I08fis 'nutzte provide ears H2 and H3 which extend upwardly for the purpose of spacing the top surface |08 from the top of the cover I8. The basic difference between the liner I4 therefor and the liner I9 of Figure 6 is that' the ears-59 and 0f the latter are omitted.

The boxes, covers and liners while differing in specific respects in the various forms o f the invention all operate, however, in the saine manner for obtaining the same results. Namely, to provide a shipping and display carton for shipping elongated articles `without breakage or damaging the same and for attractively displaying the articles.

While for purposes of illustration several forms of this invention have been disclosed, other forms thereof maybecome apparent to those skilled `in the art, and therefore, this invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.

We claim as our invention:

1. A shipping and display carton for elongated articles comprising a pair of boxes, one of said boxes having a flap at one end which is received in one end of said other box to hinge said pair of boxes together at one end which are adaptable to be moved in a side by side shipping position and an end to end display position, said boxes having holes in the top surface thereof for receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles with the upper portions thereof protruding upwardly from the boxes, a liner in each box having a surface spaced from the top surface of the box provided with holes for also receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles, a cover of greater depth than the height of the pair of boxes for enclosing the upwardly protruding elongated articles and the pair of boxes when arranged side by side, and a liner in the cover having a surface spaced from the top surface of the cover provided with holes for receiving the upper portions of the upwardly protruding elongated articles and another surface spaced from the top surface of the cover for engagement by the upper ends of the upwardly protruding elongated articles, the holes in said boxes and in all of said liners being in substantial alignment.

2. A shipping and display carton for elongated articles comprising a pair of boxes, one of said boxes-having a flap at one end which is received in one end of said other box to hinge said pair of boxes together at one end which are adaptable to be moved in a side by side shipping position and an end to end display position, said boxes having holes in the top surface thereof for receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles with the upper portions thereof protruding upwardly from the boxes, a liner in each box having a surface spaced from the top surface of the box provided with holes for also receiving the lower portions of the elongated articles and having another surface spaced from the bottom surface of the box for engagement by the lower ends of the elongated articles, a cover of greater depth than the height of the pair of boxes for enclosing the upwardly protruding elongated articles and the pair of boxes when arranged side by side, and a liner in the cover having a surface spaced from the top surface of the cover provided with holes for receiving the upper portions of the upwardly protruding elongated articles and another surface spaced from the top surface of the cover for engagement by the upper ends of the upwardly protruding elongated articles, the holes in said boxes and 1n said rstand second-mentioned liners being in substantial alignment.
