.The invention relates generally to punching or shearing dies and, more particularly, to a multiple die for performing any one of a plurality of operations.
. The invention has among its objects the production of a novel die assembly which is constructed to perform a plurality of different shear- 'ing operations, which is simple in construction,
very efficient and durable in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and which '.is of particular use in small shops whereby a single machine may be employed for a number of dififerent operations.
. Another object of the invention is the production of such a die provided with novel means for guiding and gauging the material upon which 7 the operations are to be performed.
.A further object of the invention is the production of such a die structure in which certain of the die members may be interchanged to provide additional versatility in the single die structure.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the dis- I closure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel .construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, I indicates generally the female die member comprising a base member 2 of generally rectangular shape having the corner portions notched, as indicated at 3, to provide mounting flanges 4 at each corner of the device adapted to be engaged by suitable clamping elements whereby the member 2 may be rigidly mounted on the bed of the machine on which it is to be employed. The upper face 5 of the memher 2 is provided with a more or less rectanmaintained in position by bolts gular-shaped recess 6 in which are positioned a plurality of die blocks Ia, 1b, 1c, and 7d, the blocks each being positioned adjacent a respective corner of the recess 6 and spaced from one another, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and rigidly secured to the base 2 by suitable bolts 8 passing through each block and threaded into the base member 2. Positioned between each adjacent pair of blocks and likewise seated in the recess 6 is a spacer block 9 onwhich are mounted respective guide supporting members I l, the latter and the blocks 9 each being rigidly I2 passing through the base member 2, respective blocks 9, and threaded into each bar H, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be noted that as the upper surfaces of the blocks 9 are inset below the upper surfaces of the adjacent blocks, each bar H is positioned in a channel between adjacent blocks 1, whereby each bar is rigidly held in position with respect to the base member and the die blocks.
As clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, the die block la is provided with a diagonally extending shearing edge l3, the block lb with L-shaped cutting edges l4, the block 'lc with a curved cutting edge l5, and the block Id with the curved cutting edge [1. The blocks la, and lb are also provided with additional curved cutting edges I8 and [9, respectively, for the purposes hereinafter set forth. The base member 2 is provided with a centrally located opening 2| therethrough to permit passage of sheared material through the die.
(Jo-operable with the die member 2 is a male punch member, indicated generally by the numeral 22, adapted to be mounted on the movable drive member or ram 23 of the punch press by means of the large bolt 24 and pins 25. As illustrated'in Fig. 4, the member 22 is generally X- shaped, having a plurality of radially extending 3 portions 26, with cutting edges 21a, 21b, 21c, and 27d being positioned between adjacent projections 26. Each of the latter is provided with a downwardly extending flange 28 adapted to be positioned adjacent the blocks 9, and it will be noted that as the blocks 9 and adjacent ends of the bars H are outwardly ofiset with respect to the adjoining side edges of adjacent die blocks 1, channels between each pair of die blocks are formed",.the channels being of a size to receive the adjacent ends of each projection 26 and provide a guide therefor whereby the female die member 2 and male member 22 are maintained in accurate alignment at all times. tioned that while Fig. 2 illustrates the male and female members as being completely separated,
such separation is merely for the purpose of clearly illustrating the parts, andnormally the upward movement of the male memberwould be limited to such an extent that the flanges 28 do-notleave their respective guide channels-during normal operation ofv the device.

In likemanner, the shearing edge 27a of the member. 2?. is complementary to the edge: l8v of the block la, and the shearing edge 21b.- is. complementary to the. shearing edge l9 of the-block 1b.

Thus by use. of the cutting of material B after it has been cut by the edges [4 and 34 to form a notch b. In like manner, Fig. 8 illustrates a portion of a sheet C, the corher of which has been rounded by means of the cutting edges [5 and 210; and Fig. 9 illustrates the rounding of an end of a strip D by means of the cutting edges I! and 21d.
To facilitate guiding and gauging of material being cut, guide members 35 and 35' are provided. As illustrated in Fig. 5;, eacfn guide member 35 is generally triangular in shape and is provided along one edge with a downwardly extending flange 36, the bottom face of each member being. provided with a rib 31, extending transversely to the flange 36 and adapted to be positioned in oneof the. channels 38 in the guide bars H adjacent the blocks la and lb. Each of the members 35 is provided with an elongated slot 39 extending through the rib 3'! and adapted to receive a mounting screw 4| threaded into the bar H.

6; with the cutting edges l3 and 33"; the. guide members 35 would'bev mountedon the supporting bars l'l" adjacent the block 1a,, as illustrated, in Fig. 1,, and as the guide members. may be shifted transversely with respectto their supporting, bars i I, the amount of'material removed from the corner during the cutting operation may be readily varied by moving the guide members 35 relative to their bars. The ribs 31 and channels 38 insure proper alignment of the guide flanges 36, at all times maintaining the flanges on the respective guide members at a 90 relationship in any of their adjusted positions.
The guide members 35' are adapted foruse in guiding strip material into any ofthe co-opeia tcutting edges and, as illustrated in Fig. I', are set up to guide material, such as the strip D illustrated in Fig: 9, relative to. the cutting edges. l1 and 2111; Each ofthe guide members'3'5"is'provided with a flange 42 adapted to seat: upon the upper surface of therespective bars H, each flange being provided with an elongated slot 43 extending parallel to its respective bar adapted to receive a mounting screw 44 threaded into the bar H. As illustrated in Fig. 1, each bar H is provided with two threaded bores 45 adapted to receive screws i iwhereby the guidie members 35 may be mounted on eitherside' of the respective' bars in operative position with respect to any one of thedie blocks 1. Each of the guide members 35 is provided with an edge extendingdiagonally relative to the bar' H supporting the same, at an angle of substantially 45- with respect thereto. The diagonal edges 46' on the respective guide members ext-end in opposite directi'ons. relative to their mounting edges to form right andleft hand guidemembersso th'atwhen the members are mounted as illustrated'ih Fig.

l5 and ll would be normally employed either for trimming the ends of strip material, such as illusftrated in Fig. 9, or for rounding the corners'of a sheet of material, such as illustrated in Fig 8. In the event strip material is employed, the gu de members 35' may be employed in connection with either of the die blocks, and if corners are to be 'in connection with any one'of. the die blocks and regardless of the positions of the blocks la and 1b; inview of which all of the bars II are provided with threaded bores 45 for mounting the guide members 35 thereon. While the die blocks 1 have been illustrated with various shaped cutting edges, it is believed apparent that the shape of such edges, as well as the combination of edges employed, may be varied to suit particular requirements.
It will be noted from the above description that I have provided a novel die structure, for performing a plurality of diiferent cutting operations, together with novel means for guiding material into the same, which device is relatively "simple in construction, durable, and very eflicient in operation.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses I mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a punching die, the combination of a female die member and a co-operable male punch member moveable relative to each other on a pre-determined axis, co-operating means on the die and punch members for maintaining the same in axial alignment during relative movement therebetween, a plurality of die blocks radially arranged about said axis, said punch member having a portion for each block complementary to and co-operable with a portion of the latter, one of said blocks being constructed to be selectively positioned relative to the base member whereby a second portion of such block may be positioned to co-operate with said punch member, a block adapted to be removably secured to the punch member and having a portion complementary to and co-operable with the second portion of said die block when the latter portion is in operable position, radially extending guide supporting bars carried by said die member, each bar being positioned between adjacent die blocks,
and a pair of guide members, each mounted on mounted on said 'female member, saidpu member having a portion complementary to and co-operable with a portion of said block, a'pair of radially extending guide, supporting bars mounted upon said spacer blocks afiixed to said die member and extending at right angles to one another, each bar being positionedyat one side of said block, and a pair of guide members each mounted on one of said bars and adjustable relative to the latter for guiding material relative to the co-operating portions of such die blpck and punch member. v b
3. In a punching die, the combination of a female die member including spacer blocks and a co-operable male punch member'moveable relative to each other on a pre-determinedaxis, cooperating means on the die and punch members for maintaining the same in axial alignment dur ing relative movement therebetween, a die block mounted on said female member, said punch member having aportion complementary to and co-operable with a portion of said block, a pair of radially extending guide supporting bars mounted upon said spacer blocks aflixed to said die member and extending at right angles to one another, each bar being positioned at one side of said block, and apair of guide members, each mounted on one of said bars, said guide'members having material engageable guide edges extending parallel to one another and at an angle of to their respective supporting'barsand adjustable relative to the latter in a directionparallel thereto for guidingmaterial relative to the co-operating portions of such die block and punch member.
4. In a punching die, the combination ofa female die member including spacer. blocks arranged at right angles to each other and a cooperable male punch member moveable relative to each other on a pre-determined axis,.c0-opcrating means on the die and punch members for maintaining the same in axial alignment during relative movement therebetween, a die block mounted on said female member, said punch member having a portion complementary to and co-operable with a portion of said block, a pair of radially extending guide supporting bars atfixed to said spacer blocks .mounted upon said die member and extending at right angles to one another, each bar being positioned at one side of tending parallel to their respective supporting bars and adjustable relative to the latter in a direction at right angles thereto for guiding material relative. to the co-operating portionof such die block and punch member.
5. In a punch die, the combination of a female die member and a co-operable male punch member moveable relative to each other on-a pre-determined axis, co-operating means on the die and punch members for'maintaining the same in axial alignment during relative movement therebetween, a plurality-of die blocks radially arranged about said axis, said punch member having a portion for each block complementary to and co-operable'with a portion of the latter, one of said blocks being constructed to be selectively positioned relative to the base member whereby a second portion of such block may be positioned to co-operate with said punch member, and a block adapted to be 'removably secured to the punch member and having a portion complementary to and co-operable with the second portion oi said; die block when. the latter portion is-in operableposition.

In a punchdie, the combination of afemale die member and a co-op'erable malepunch member movable relative to. each. other ona prede termined axis, a plurality of die blocks radially arranged about said axis, said punch member having a portion for each block complementary to and co-operable with a portion of the latter, at least one of said blocks being constructed to be selectively positioned relative to the base member whereby a second portion of such block may be positioned to co-operate with said punch member, and at least one block adapted to be removably secured to the punch member and having a portion complementary to and co-operable with a second portion of said die block when the latter portion is in operable position.
12. In a punch die, the combination of a female die member and a co-operable male punch member movable relative to each other on a predetermined axis, co-operating means on the die and punch members for maintaining the same in axial alignment during relative movement therebetween, a die block mounted on said female member, said punch member having a portion complementary to and co-operable with a portion of said die block, the latter being constructed to be selectively positioned relative to the base member whereby at least one other portion of such die block may be positioned to co-operate with said punch member, at least one block adapted to be removably secured to the punch member and having a portion complementary to and co-operable with at least one other portion of said die block when said other portion is in operable position.
13. In a punch die, the combination of a female die member and co-operable male punch member movable relative to each other on a predetermined axis, a die block mounted on said female member, said punch member having a portion complementary to and co-operating with a portion of said die block, the latter being constructed to be selectively positioned relative to the base member whereby at least one other portion of such die block may be positioned to co-operate with said punch member, at least one block adapted to be removably secured to the punch member and having a portion complementary to and co-operable with at least one other portion of said die block when said other portion is in operable position.
14. In a punching die, the combination of a female die member including spacer blocks and a co-operable male punch member movable relative to each other on a predetermined axis, a die block mounted on said female member, said punch member having a portion complementary to and co-operable with a portion of said block, a pair of radially extending guide supporting bars afiixed to said spacer blocks and extending at right angles to one another, each bar being positioned at one side of said block, and a pair of guide members, each mounted on one of said bars and adjustable relative to the latter for guiding material relative to the co-operating portions of such die block and punch member.
15. In a punch die, the combination of a female die member and a co-operating male punch member movable relative to each other on a predetermined axis, said female die member being adapted to receive at least one selectively positionable die block having differently shaped working edge portions, and said male punch member including projections at right angles to each other and adapted to receive at least one removable block between contiguous projections for forming said male punch member into a configuration complemental to the co-operable working edge portions of the female die member.
16. In a punch die, the combination of a female die member including spacer blocks mounted on the die member on axes at right angles to each other and a co-operable male punch member movable relative to each other on a predetermined axis, said female die member being adapted to receive a plurality of positionable die blocks between and contiguous to the spacer block, each having differently shaped working edge portions, and said male punch member including projections at right angles to each other and adapted to receive a plurality of removable blocks between contiguous projections for forming said male punch member into a configuration complemental to the co-operable working edge portions of the female die member.
