(Cl. 15S-Jill 3 Claims.. 1 This invention relates to a device for straightening metal drums.
An object of this invention is to providea device` which will straighten metal drums having a cylindrical side wall and formedwith a pair of spaced beads between the ends thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a drum straightening device which will not only straighten the side wall of the drum and also straighten the annular beads on the side Wall, but will also straighten the flange or chime at the bottom of the drum.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction and is capable of handling drums of different diameters.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of` const-ruction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates generally a frame structure which includes a base II having secured thereto upright frame members I2 and I3. The frame members I2 and I3 have secured thereto forwardly extending tubular frame members I which are disposed in parallel relation with respect to the base II and project forwardly from the forward frame member I3.
An upper pair of roller carrying -shafts I5 are journalled through the frame members I2 and I3, being rotatably supported from bearings I1 carried by an intermediate horizontal frame member I8. The shafts I6 have secured thereto rollers I9, and 2l and intermediate beaded rollers 22 and 23 are disposed between adjacent pairs of rollers I9, 20 and 2|. The beaded rollers 22 and 23 are adapted to engage on the concave inner side of a bead formed in the drum between the ends of the drum so that thebeadw-illf be re-established or straightened.

An intermediate idler roller 3.0 is rotatably;

A lower pair off shafts 33 are-disposed below the upper shafts I.Ii=. and are xedly secured to a hinge plate or leaf? 341which is rockably carried by a horizontally disposed bar 35A fixed between the upright sidesfoff the rear frame I2. The leaf` 34 is secured toa shaf-t 33.by. meansof'a U-Shaped clamp 35 so that. shaft 3131 will be held against rotation and will be permitted' tof. havevertical. rocking. movement as will' be hereinafter described.
The forward ends ofv the non-rotatableA shafts 33 are secured to a horizontally disposedV plate 3T andthe plate 3='I has extending-'forwardly therefrom aV pair of ears 38l between which the upper end of a plunger rod 39is adapted to barock-ably mounted. The rod 39 is secured to a piston 40 slidable in a pressure cylinder 4I and the cylinder 4I is adapted to be connected to a source of pressure supply by means of pipes 42 and 43.
Each shaft 33 has rotatably mounted thereon rollers 44, 45 and 46, and also has mounted between pairs of these roll-ers grooved rollers 4l and 48. The grooved rollers 4l and 48 cooperate with the beaded rollers 22 and 23 in effecting the straightening of the bead in the cylindrical wall of a drum generally designated as D. The forward roller 4B of each shaft 33 is formed with an offset 49 within which the flanged outer end of the drum is adapted to engage. The flange or chime of the drum is straightened by means of a bevelled roller 5| rotatably carried by a shaft 52. The shaft 52 is xed to a rock lever 53 which is rockably mounted on a pivot 54 carried by an upright support 55.
The roller I, as shown in Figure 2, is disposed between the two lower rollers 46 and is moved forwardly to operative position with upward movement of plate 31 and shafts 33 by means of a link 56 pivotally secured to the ears 38. The upper end of link 58 is pivotally connected to a depending arm 56awhich extends downwardly from lever 53.
In the use and operation of this device, the 1 drum will have one head thereof removed and the drum is then extended over rollers 2 I, 20 and I9 respectively. At this time'the shafts 33 will be in dotted line position shown in AFigure 1. The shafts 33 are then raised by upward movement of piston 40 so that rollers 44, 45 and 46 will engage the outer side of the cylindrical drum wall and press the drum against the inner or upper rollers I9, and 2l. As the side of the drum is being straightened by rolling contact with the upper and lower rollers, the chime or flange at the bottom of the drum will also be straightened by the bevelled roller 5 I.
I do not mean to conf-lne myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A drum straightening device comprising a base, a pair of upright frame members carried by said base adjacent the rear thereof, a pair of shafts rotatably carried by said frame members and disposed in parallel relation with respect to said base, rollers fixed on said shafts, a second pair of shafts disposed below said rst pair of shafts, means rockably supporting one end of said second pair of shafts from said frame ineinbers,rollers rotatably carried by said second pair of shafts, a chime engaging roller rockably carried by said base between said second pair of shafts, means engaging the forward ends of said second pair of shafts for moving said second pair of shafts toward or away from said first pair of shafts, and means connected with said lastmentioned means for rocking said chime roller to operative position with rocking of said second pair of shafts to operative position.
2. A drum straightening device comprising a base, upright frame means at one end of said base, horizontally disposed frame means extending forwardly from said upright frame means, an upper roller shaft rotatably carried by said upright frame means and extending forwardly therefrom parallel with said horizontal frame means, a, lower pair of shafts, means rockably supporting the rear ends of said lower shafts from said frame means, rollers carried by said upper and lower shafts, means engaging the forward ends of said lower shafts for rocking the latter from a lower inoperative position to an upper operative position, a chime engaging roller, means rockably supporting said chime engaging roller between the forward ends of said lower shafts, means connecting said chime roller supporting means with said shaft rocking means for rocking movement therewith, and a bracing roller carried by the forward portion of said 1 horizontal frame means for bracing said upper shaft. 3. AN drum straightening device comprising a base, upright frame means at one end of said base, horizontally disposed frame means extend- A ing forwardly from said upright frame means,
an upperpair 'of roller shafts rotatably carried by said upright frame means and extending forwardly therefrom parallel with said horizontal frame means, a lower pair of shafts, means rockably supporting the rear ends of said lower shafts from said frame means, rollers carried by said upper and lower shafts, hydraulic piston means engaging the forward ends of said lower shafts for rocking the latterv from a lower inoperative position to an upper operative position, a chime engaging roller, means rockably supporting said chime engaging roller between the forward ends of said lower shafts, means including a link pivotally connected at one end to said chime roller and pivotally connected at its other end to said shaft rocking means for rocking movement therewith, and bracing rollers carried by the forward portion of said horizontal frame means for bracing said upper shafts.
