To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BROR J. LINDGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of 6 New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal-Bending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for bending a sheet of metal into tubular form, and more particularly to a machine of this character which is adapted to bend into tubular form a sheet which has been previously corrugated so that the tube resulting l6 therefrom will have the corrugations extending circumferentially-around the same and may be subsequently converted into a stove pipe elbow.
' It is the ob'ect of this invention to produce a machine whereby such bending may be accomplished effectively, expeditiously and economically and by means which can be easily operated with a minimum expenditure of power and without liability of derangement, as well as permitting of ready adjustment for producing pipes from sheet metal of various diameters and lengths.

In order to continue the gaging opera tion of the sheet of metal as the same is converted into a tube and also guide the some rea ers lit simultaneously transversely of the machine 7 for adapting the same for the formation of sheet metal tubes of varying length.
Generall speaking, the upper and lower feeding r0 lers are provided with circumfemntial corrugations, the salient parts or rihs of the corrugations ofone roller being opposite the receding parts of the grooves of the corrugations of the other feed roller the corrugations of the sheet metal heing received between these corrugations, so that these corrugations of the feed rollers register with those of the sheet of metal and produce a grip on'opposite sides of the lattor for causing the sheet of metal to he fed forwardly from the feed table and against the turning member for bending the sheet into tubular form during the normal 0 ration of the machine. In order to ena lo the corrugations of the feeding rollers to engage with the corrugated parts of the of metal and ensure a firm grip thereon for positively feeding the same forwardly without however distorting or changing the formation of the corrugations of the sheet other than converting the same into tubular form, the corrugations of one of these feed ing rollers are made comparatively deep and those on the other feeding roller are made comparatively shallow, so' that when the corrugations of the sheets of metal are gripped by the corrugations of the feeding rollers, the summit of the deep corrugation of one of the feeding rollers and the valley of one of the shallow corrugations of the other reed roller will engage sides of one of the corrugations of the sheet of metal toward one side of the latter, while the summit of each of the shallow corrugations on one of the feeding rollers and the corresponding valley of a deep corrugation on the other roller will be spaced apart from opposite sides of the corrugation of the sheet toward the other side of the. same, as shown in Fig. 12. By this means the sheet of metal will only be gripped on its opposite sides at the alternate corrugations thereofl, instead of over its entire surface, whereby only so much lid Hill

sheet metal. tubes of different lengths, means are provided'whereby the corrugated area of these feeding rollers may be shortened or lengthened to suit the particular length of tube which is to be manufactured. This is preferably effected by providing the bodies of these feeding rollers, which in effect constitute the shafts of the same, with a sufficient number of permanent integral corrugations 51', 52 for operating upon a minimum number of corrugations which are 'liEely to be used in the formation of a corrugated tubular sheet of metal of minimum length and in addition thereto a plurality of corrugations 53, 54 are removably mounted on the shafts of these feeding rollers, .so as to permit of increasing the corrugations on these rollers more or less, as
required, to suit a correspondingly increased corrugated area on a sheet of metal which is to be bent into a tube. Such removable corrugations are mounted on collars 55, 56 which are'slipped onreduced parts 57, 58 of the upper and lower feed roller shafts adjacent to the permanent corrugations thereon, so that when these removable collars are assembled with the shafts the corrugations on each of these rollers will form a continuous and regular series from one end of the row of corrugations to the other, as
best shown in Fig. 13. Adjacent to the corresponding left ends of the series of permanent corrugations of the feedi rollers, the latter are provided with cylindrical faces 59 and 60 which co-operate' to grip between them the uncorrugated edge portion 61 at one of the longitudinal edges of the sheet of metal which forms one end of the tube, as shown in \Figs. 13 and 20, and adjacent to the right end of the removable corrugations, cylindrical gripping sleeves 62. 63 are mounted upon the reduced parts of these rollers which gripping sleeves receive between thein the uncorrugated portion at the opposite longitudinal edge of the sheet of metal which produces the uncorrugated edge portion 64 at the opposite 'end of the tube, as shown in the same figures. of holding the same in their roper position on the shafts of the upper and lower feeding rollers by means of bearin sleeves 64, 65 arranged on the adjacent en s of these rollers and engaged by clamping screw nuts 66, 67 arranged at the res ective ends of the shafts of these rollers an engaging the outer ends of the bearing sleeves, as best shown in Figs. 13 and 14.
The lower feeding roller is arranged immediately in front of the front edge of the feed table with its upper. surface substantially in line therewith and the same is journaled at that end thereof having the permanent gripping surface 60 in a bearin 68 arranged at the upper end of a 'stan ard 69 rising from the adjacent part of the main frame while the bearingsleeve 65 at the other end of this shaft is journaled in a bearing 70 which is preferably made vertically adjustable so as to permit of bringing the same in the proper position-relative to the upper feeding roller during the normal operative osition of the parts. For this purpose the caring 70 is guided in a vertical way 71 formed in the upper part of a standard 72 rising from the main frame on that side thereof opposite to the standard 69 and a vertical adjusting screw 73 is arranged in a threaded opening in the standard 72 and engaged at its upper end with the underside of the bearing 70 so that by turning thescrew 73 in one direction or the other the lower feeding roller may be tilted up or down at its right hand end for the purpose of bringing the same into proper alinement relative to the upper feeding roller for roducing the proper gripping effect of the eeding rollers on the sheet of metal which is to be converted into a tube.
When the sheet of metal has been converted into a tube, the same surroundsthe upper feeding roller and its lower part is gripped between the upper and lower feeding rollers. In order thereforeto permit of removing the finished tube from the machine, the upper feeding roller is raised preferably at one end thereof, and theraised end is detached from itssupport, as shown in Fig. 13, leaving the space around the raised end of the upper feeding roller unobstructed, so that the finished sheet metal tube may be withdrawn lengthwise therefrom, the position of this tube while being thus removed being indicated by dotted lines A practical way for thus operating the upper feeding roller consists in journaling that end of the same opposite to its bearing sleeve 64 in a vertically swinging bearing 74 which latter is formed on a vertically swinging yoke 7 5 having horizontal longitudinal trunnions or pivots 76 on its opposite sides which are journaled in bearings 77 on the upper part of the standard 69, as best shown in Fig. 3.

Any suitable means may be provided for turning these feeding rollers so that their -.cooperating opposing surfaces which grip the sheet of metal move forwardly, this being accomplished in the present instance b means of a driving shaft 78 provided wit n driving pinion 79 meshing with a driven gear wheel 88 on the shaft 50 of the lower feeding roller and a air of cooperatin gear pinions 8i, 82 of ike diameter secure respectivel to those ends-of the lower and npper fee ing rollers adjacent to the beer ings 88 end it of the some. The lower section 86 is preferably formed integrally with the standard 72 at the upper end thereof and the upper section 87 is preferably so mounted that the same is movable relatively to the lower bearing block section so as to permit of engaging this upper section with or disengaging the same'from the upper side of the bearing sleeve 64. For this pur ose the upper side of the upper bearing block section 87 is provided with an eccentric bearing loop or strap 88 which receives an cecentric 89. For the purpose of limitin the upward and inward motion of the o e- 90, 91 and also retaining the same fir y in place when the same and the parts mounted thereon are in their operative position, retaining means may be provided which maybe variously constructed, but which in the present instance consist informing inclined surfaces 100 on the inner sides of the upper the yoke bars 90, 91 and engaging t e same with correspondingly inclined faces 101 on est shown in lllll parts of the upper parts of the outer sides of the standard 72, one pair of these cooperating inclined faces being shown in Fig. 16. By this means a wcdging engagement of the yoke 90, 91 with the standard 72 is produced upon swinging this yoke upwardly into its operative position, whereby these parts are firmly held against fore and aft motion rel ative to each other. The shaft 94 is preferably extendedrearwardly a sufto serve as a ban e 105 whereby the yoke 75 of the upper feeding roller and thev may be manipulated by one hand for swinging the same upwardly or downwardly into its operative or inoperative position, while the other hand is engaged in manipulating the crank 95 for tightening 0r loosening the upper bearing block 87.
It is preferable to automatically raise the upper feeding roller from the lower feeding roller at the 'same time that the yoke 90, 91 and the parts mounted thereon are moved into their inoperative and operative positions and thus avoid the necessity of separate manipulations for this purpose and expediting the out put of the machine and increasing the capacity of the machine accordingly. For this purpose the yoke 7 5 is provided with a downwardly projectin shifting rock arm 106 which is connect by means of a shifting bar or rod 107 with the front bar 91 of the clamping yoke above the axis of the pivot pin 93. thereof, whereby an outward and downward movement of the yoke 90, 91 will cause the upper feed- ,ing roller to be lifted, as shown in Fig. 13,
while an upward and inward movement of the clamping yoke will cause the upper feeding roller to be lowered, as shown in Fig.1. In order, .however, to permit the clamping yoke to first move laterally sufiicient to carry its upper bearing block clear of. the bearing sleeve 64 of the upper feeding roller before the latter begins-its u ward motion, a slack connection is provide in the shifting means which operatively'onnects the bearing yoke clamp yoke, which slack connection preferably consists of apin 108 arranged 'in'the lower end of the shifting am 106 and work-.

If desired, the turning roller 110 may be raised and lowered relative to the feeding rollers by the means which are shown in Figs. 21-24 and which are constructed as follows: a

Each of these eccentrics is surrounded by an eccentric. strap 126 which is connected by a rod or pitman 127 with the shifting arm 121 on the corresponding side of the machine. Upon turning the shaft 124 in one direction or the other the turning roller 110 will be raised and lowered, this turning movement being preferably effected by means of a crank arm 128 which is secured to one end of the shaft 124. The swinging movement of the operating arm 128 is effected by means of a crank shaft 129 journaked in the upper end of the operating arm 128 and provided at one end with a gear pinion 130 which meshes with a gear segment 131 on the adjacent part of the main frame concentrically with the axis of the operating shaft 124 and a crank 132 connected with the outer end of the crank shaft 129. By this means a turning movement of the crank arm 132 in either direction will cause the pinion 130 to roll upwardly or downwardly on the segment 131 and thereby shift the o crating arm 121 and the parts associated t erewith so as to raise or lower the turning roller 110 nesaevs relatively to the feeding rollers. For the purpose of lockin the turnin roller in whatever position t e same may 5- adjusted a locking device is rovided which preferably consists' of a loc ing disk 133 arranged on the outer side of the operating arm 128 and provided with an annular row of open= ings 13d, and a spring pressed catch 135 arrand on the handle of the crank arm 132 and adapted to engage with one or another of the openings 134. B turning roller may be easi y shifted into any desired position and then positively held in lace so that the same will operate positively or imparting the roper curvature to the sheet of metal in t e formation of a tube arranged transversely in a slot 137 in the feed table immediately in rear of the feeding rollers. This bar is lowered so that its upper side is flush with the top of the table when the sheet is placed upon the table and between the feeding rollers and with its front and resting upon the turning roller, as shown in Fig. 9. Thereafter the lifting bar is raised slightly so as to lift that portion of the sheet of metal in rear of the feeding rollers, as shown in Fig. 10, whereby an initial bend is produced in the sheet of metal which gives it a definite and permanent set in the direction in which the same is to be curved for converting the same into a tube. Thereafter the lifting bar is again lowered flush with the upper side of the feed table and then the sheet of metal is fed forwardly between the feeding roller and against the turning roller which causes successive parts of the sheet to be curved in the proper direction for causing the advancing end of the sheet to overlap the trailing end thereof and form a complete tube in which the longitudinal ed es thereof overlap each other, as shown y dotted lines in Fig. 9 and by full lines in Fig. 20.

In order to permit the operator to remain constantly at one side of the machine while operating the same during the bending of sheets of metal into tubular form the clutch 84 is operated by means of a handle 147 which is arranged on the same side of the machine as the handles 95 and 105 of the clamping yoke, this clutch operating lever being pivoted at its lower end by means of a pm 148 to the lower end of the main frame and connected by means of a rod 149 with the lower arm of the clutch lever 85, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.
As a whole, this machine is very eficient and durable in construction and permits of expeditiously bending sheet metal into tubular form with a minimum expenditure of labor and power and thus reducing the cost such articles accordingly. I claim as my invention:

A machine of the character described, comprising upper and lower feeding rollers adapted to receive between them the sheet to be bent, a turning roller arranged on the outlet side of said feeding rollers and adapted to intercept said sheet and turn it to one side, and means for adjusting said turning roller in a direction transversely of the feedmg rollers comprisin a cross bar on which said turning rol er is pivotally mounted, a rock arm which carries said cross bar, a rocking eccentric, a shifting rod connected at one end with said cross bar and provided at its other end with a stra surrounding said eccentric, a rocking a just'mg arm connected with said eccentric, and means for shifting said rock arm comprising a gear pinion pivotally mounted on the outer end of said adjusting arm, a stationary gear segment with which said pinion meshes, a rotary handle connected with said pinion, and means for locking said handle in difierent circumferential positions.

A machine of the character described comprising upper andlower feeding rollers adapted to receive between them the sheet to be, bent, a turning roller arranged on the outlet side of said feeding rollers and adapted to intercept said sheet and turn it to one side, and means for adjusting said turning roller in a direction transversely of the path of the sheet as it issues from said feeding rollers comprising a cross bar on which said turning roller is pivotally mounted, a rock arm which carries said cross bar, a rocking eccentric, a'shifting rod connected at one end with said cross bar and provided at its other end with a strap surrounding said eccentric, a rocking adjusting arm connected with said eccentric, and means for shifting said rock arm comprising a gear pinion pivotally mounted on the outer end of said adjusting arm, a stationary gear segment with which said pinion meshes, a rotary handle connected with said pinion, and means for locking said handle in different circumferential positions comprising a look-- ing disk arranged on said adjusting arm and provided with an annular row of openings arranged concentrically with said gear pinion, and a catch movably mounted on ath of the sheet as it issues from said comprising upper and lower feeding rollers which are adapted to receive between them the sheet to be bent, means for turning the sheet as the same issues from the front side" of the rollers, and means for producing an initial upward bend in, the sheet in rear of the feeding rollers.

A machine of the character described, comprising upper and lower feeding rollers which are adapted to receive between them the sheet to be bent, means for turning the sheet as the same issues from the front side of the rollers, and means for producing an initial u ward bend in the sheet in rear of the feeding rollers comprising a vertically movable lifting bar normally arranged below the path of the sheet and means for raising said bar.

A machine of the character. described comprising upper and lower feeding rollers which, are adapted to receive between them the sheet to be bent, means for turning the sheet as the same issues from the front side of the rollers, and means for producing an initial upward bend in the sheet in rear of the feeding rollers comprising a vertically movable lifting bar' normally arrangedbelow the path of the sheet, means for raising said bar comprising a rock shaft, arms on said rock shaft, and links connecting said 7 rock arms with said lifting bar.

A machine of the character described, comprising upper and lower feedingrollers which are adapted to receive between them the sheet to be bent, means for turning the sheet as the same issues from the front side of the rollers, and means for producing an initial upward bend in the sheet in rear of the feeding rollers comprising a vertically movable lifting bar normally arranged below the path of the sheet, means for raising said bar and means for guiding said bar.
