Claims.
The invention relates to stamping or printing machines and more particularly to a machine for stamping surface designs upon chinaware, glass and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a machine which will rapidly and efficiently stamp borders or other surface designs, in gold or the like, upon china or glass plates, dishes and similar objects.
Another object is the provision of such a machine with a plurality of fingers for gripping the edges of the dishes and properly centering the same, regardless of variations in the'dlameters of the dishes.
A further object is the provision of automatic sizing means for regulating the diameter of the stamping head to compensate for variations in the diameters of the dishes being decorated.
A still further object is the provision of a stamping head formed of a plurality of resiliently mounted adjustable segments to which is connected the periphery of a resilient disc upon which the stamp is mounted.
Another object is the provision of a novel inking device by means of which the proper amount of gold or ink is applied to the stamp during each operation of the machine.
The above objects, together with others which will be apparent from an inspection of the drawings and the following description, may be attained by constructing the improved stamping machine in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved chinaware stamping machine with parts shown in section for the purpose of illustration;

The machine is mounted upon a frame includ-- ing the uprights l0, connected at their upper ends with angle iron members H, and at a point spaced from their upper ends with the angle irons l2, a platform l3 being supported upon the uprights at a point spaced above the floor.
Power may be furnished by a. motor I 4 mounted upon the platform l3 and provided with a pulley l5. connected as by the belt I6 with a pulley I1 upon the shaft l8 journalled in bearings I9 mounted upon brackets 20 supported upon the platform I 3. I
A graduated series of pulleys 2| is fixed upon the shaft l8 and arranged to be connected, as by the belt 22, with a similar series of pulleys 23 upon the countershaft 24, one end of which extends into the reduction gear housing 25, the other end being journalled in a bearing 26 mounted upon a bracket 21 supported upon the platform lit. The reduction gear housing 25 is suspended from the angle irons I2 as indicated at 28.
The cam shaft 29 is driven by the reduction gears and the outer end thereof is journalled in a bearing 30 mounted upon the angle iron 3| connected to adjacent uprights H).
A large cam 32 is fixed upon the rear end portion of the cam shaft 29 and a smaller cam 33 is fixed upon the forward end portion thereof.
The bed 34 is rigidly supported at the upper end of the frame and the vertical guide rod 35 is suspended therefrom, the upper end of the guide rod being reduced as at 36 and located within a bore in the bed, a screw 31 rigidly attaching the guide rod to the bed.
The screw 31 has an extension 38 upon the head thereof and the disc 39 which supports the plate or other article to be stamped is rotatably mounted thereon being provided with a stud 40 journalled in the extension 38.
A heavy cylindric block 4| is slidably mounted upon the guide rod 35 and the plate 42 is fixed to the lower end thereof as by the screws 43 and spacers 44. A roller 45 is journalled between the ears 46 depending from the plate 42 and riding upon the smaller, forward cam 33.
For the purpose of gripping the peripheral edge of the plate or other article to be stamped and quickly centering the same, a. plurahty of fingers 41 are provided. Each finger is carried by a separate plate 48 adjustably mounted upon one of a series of radially disposed slidable blocks 49, 's y a screw 50.
Each block 49 is slidably mounted upon a radially disposed T-shaped guide bar 5| fixed upon the bed 34.

A-vertica1 tubular column 60 is mounted at the rear side of the frame and extends upwardly a considerable distance above the bed 34 and slidthe rod 6| which is provided with lower end 62 in which is journalled a roller 63 riding upon the cam 32.

A bracket arm 69 may be connected to the rear side of the sleeve 66 for supporting a weight 10 to assist in holding the roller 63 in engagement with the cam 32 at all times.
The stamping head, indicated generally at 1|, is carried by the horizontal arm 68, being mounted upon the depending rod 12. A circular form 13, of wood or the like, is connected to the flanged collar 14, fixed upon the lowerend of the rod 12, and above said collar is slidably mounted a plate 15 fixed upon the sliding sleeve 16.
A plurality of radially disposed, inverted, U- shaped brackets 11 are mounted upon the underside of the plate 15 as by the screws 18.
The stamping head is made up of a plurality of separate segments 19, one segment being carried by each of the brackets 11, by means of a rod 80 fixed upon the inner side of the segment and slidably located through the corresponding bracket. A coil spring 8I surrounds each rod 80 and by engagement with the pin or collar 02 upon the rod, urges the segments outward.
The several segments 19 of the stamping head are flexibly connected together by a rubber diaably supports phragm 83 which carries the rubber stamp or stamps for decorating the plates or other articles.
As indicated in Fig. 7, a border design may be provided at 84 and a second stamp at 85 for imprinting a surface decoration upon the central portion of the plate. Each of the rubber stamps 84 and 85 is preferably backed up with a soft rubber pad of sponge rubber or the like as shown at 86. A similar pad 81 is carried by the circular form 13.
The plate 15 and sleeve 16 are normally urged downward into contact with the collar 14 by the coil spring 88 which surrounds the rod 12. A

A ring 92 is Journalled upon the tubular column 60 between the fixed collars 93 and carries the bracket 94 whlchsupports the inking plate The inking plate is rotatably mounted upon the bracket 94 and provided with a ratchet 96 which cooperates with a pawl 91 carried upon a plate 98 rotatably mounted on the bracket 94, and operatively connected to the arm 98' which is fixedly carried by oneofthe collars 93.
The ring 92 has a lug 99 extending radially therefrom and one end ofthe link I| is pivotally connected thereto as at IOI, the other end I assacre radially disposed rods 54- exof said link being pivotally connected at I02 to a lever I03 fixed upon the rocker shaft I04 journailed in bearings I05 and I06 upon the rear side of the frame.
A rocker arm I01 is fixed upon the lower portion of the rocker shaft I04 and pivotally connected as at I08 to one end of a link I09, the other end of which is pivotally connected as at IIO to a lever III fulcrumed at II2 upon the 10 frame.
A spring H3 is connected to the lower end of the lever III and to the frame to normally hold the linkage in the position shown in Fig. 2. An arcuate flange H4 is carried by the link III for engagement by the roller II5 upon the cam 32.
The ink is evenly distributed over the top surface of the inking plate 95 by means of an ink roller II6 formed of soft rubber and carried in a frame II1 mounted upon a carriage II8 which travels upon the rails II9 by means .of the upper and lower rollers I20 and I2I respectively.
The carriage is connected by a spring I22 with one arm I23 of a bell-crank lever journalled at 29, the other arm I24 of said bell-crank lever 25 being connected by the link I25 to a lever I28 fulcrumed at I21 upon the frame.
The roller II5 upon the cam 32 is adapted to engage the lever I28 and through the linkage and levers above described, the carriage II8 is moved to the left as viewed in Fig. 2 rolling the soft rubber ink roll II6 across the top surface of the inking plate 95 and evenhr distributing the ink thereon.
Ink is supplied to the plate 95 by means of an ink container I28 supported above the inking plate upon a bracket I29 attached to the upper end of the tubular column 60. A cylinder I30 is provided upon the container and the plunger I3I in said cylinder is contacted by the lever I32, fulcrumed as at I33 upon the ear I34 upon the container I28.
The lower end of this lever has a pivoted portion I35 adapted to be engaged by the upright finger I35 upon the carriage II8 for feeding ink from the container onto the inking plate with each operation of the inking roller.
The lever I32 has an angular arm I31 thereon upon which is adjustably mounted a weight I38 for returning the plunger to normal position after each operation thereof by the spring I30a.
With the parts in the initial position as shown in the drawings a plate or other article to be stamped is placed upon the disc 39 and as the cam shaft 29 rotates in the direction of the arrows shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the roller II5 upon the cam 32 will first engage the lever I26 moving the same downward and through the link I25, bellcrank lever I23I24 and link I22, the carriage I I8 will be moved to the left as viewed in Fig. 2, rolling the soft rubber roller II6 across the inking plate 95. As the finger I36 contacts the lower end I35 of the lever I32, a drop of ink will be pumped from the container, I28 and deposited upon the plate 95 and as the roller I I5 passes out of contact with the lever I26 the spring I39 will return the carriage I I8 to the initial position, the roll II6 evenly distributing the ink upon the plate 95.
. In the meantime the cam 33 will have permitted the sleeve 4| to move downward and through thelinks 51, bell-crank levers 56, and links 59, the fingers 41 will be moved radially inward gripping the peripheral edge of the plate and holding it firmly against movement.
Further movement of the cam 32 will permit theplunger 6| to move downward moving the stamping head H down until the rim stamp 84 contacts the plate. Further downward movement or the rod 12 moves the soft rubber pad 81 down upon the diaphragm 83 pressing the central stamps 85 into contact with the central portion of the plate.
As the head reaches this position the rotatable balls 89 will engage the gripping fingers fl radially moving the segments inward to size the stamp to conform to the plate, and permitting the head to be easily raised after the stamping operation.
The roller H will then contact the flange H4 upon the link I II and through the rocker arm I01, rocker shaft I04, rocker arm I03, and link I00, the ring 92 will be oscillated upon the tubular column 60 swinging the inking plate 95 across the rubber stamp upon the inking head, placing sufilcient ink upon the stamp for an operation.
At this time the stamping head has been raised and the fuller 63 is riding upon the high part of the cam 32, and passes through the slight depression 32a therein which drops the stamping head into contact with the inking plate.
As the roller I I5 passes out of engagement with the flange H4 the spring H3 will return the inking plate to the initial position.
I claimz 1. A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, a plurality of gripping fingers movably associated with the bed for gripping the edge of the article, means for simultaneously moving the fingers radially against the edge of the article, a vertically movable stamping head above the bed, stamping means upon said stamping head and means for moving the stamping head into contact with the article after said fingers have gripped the article and balls upon the stamping head for contact with the gripping fingers'for sizing the stamping means to conform to the size of the article.
2. A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, gripping fingers associated with the bed for gripping the edge of the article, a vertically movable stamping head above the bed, said stamping head comprising a plurality of independent segments, stamping means carried by said segments, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and means upon the segments and meansupon the stamping head cooperating wtih said grip-e ping fingers for radially moving the segments to size the stamping means to correspond to the article.

A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, a plurality of gripping fingers movably associated with the bed for gripping the edge of the article, means for simultaneously moving the fingers radially against the edge of the article, a Vertically movable stamping head, said stamping head comprising a plu rality of independent segments, stamping means carried by said segments, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and balls upon the segments for contact with the gripping fingers for radially moving the segments to size the stamping means to correspond to the article.

A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, a plurality of gripping fingers movably associated with the bed for grippin the edge of the article, means for simultaneously moving the fingers radially against the edge of the article, a vertically movable stamping head, said stamping head comprising a plurality of independent segments, spring means for urging the segments radially outward; stamping means carried by. said segments, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and'balls upon the segments for contact with the gripping fingers for radially moving the segments inward to size the stamping means to correspond to the article.

A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, gripping means upon the bed for gripping the edge of the article, a vertically movable stamping head above the bed, said stamping head comprising a plurality of independent segments, stamping means carried by said segments, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and means upon the stamping head cooperating with said gripping means for radially moving the segments to size the stamping means to correspond to the article as the stamping head is moved downward.

A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed to be stamped, gripping means upon the bed for ripping the edge of the article, a vertically movable stamping head above the bed, said stamping head comprising a plurality of independent seggents, resilient stamping means carried by said segments, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and means upon the stamping head cooperating with the gripping means for radially moving the segments to size the stamping means t correspond to the article as the stamping head is moved downward.

A stamping machine of the character descri ed comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, gripping means upon the bed for gripping the edges of the article, a vertically movable stamping head above the bed, said stamping head comprising a plurality of independent segments, resilient stamping means means carried by said segments, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and means upon the stamping head cooperating with the gripping means for radially moving the segments to size the stamping means to correspond to the article as the stamping head is moved downward and means movable vertically relative to the resilient stamping means for causing the stamping means to conform to the contour of the article.

A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped. a plurality of gripping fingers movably associated with the bed for gripping the edge of the article, means for simultaneously moving the fingers radially against the edge of the article, a vertically movable stamping head above the bed said stamping head comprising a plurality of independent segments, spring means for urging the segments radially outward, a resilient diaphragm carried by said segments, stamping means upon said diaphragm, means movable vertically relative to the diaphragm for causing the stamping means to conform to the contour of the article, means for moving the stamping head downward into contact with the article and means upon the segments for contact for supporting an article segments inward to size the stamping means to conform to the article.

A stamping machine of the character described comprising a bed for supporting an article to be stamped, means associated with the bed for gripping the edges of the article and centering the article upon stamping head above the bed, stamping means upon the stamping head, means for moving the stamping head downward to contact the article and means upon the stamping head cooperating with said mean for gripping the edges of the article for sizing the stamping means to conform the bed, a vertically movablev stamping head above the bed, stamping means upon the stamping head, means for moving the stamping head downward to contact the article and. means upon the stamping head cooperating with said means for gripping the edges of the article for sizing the stamping means to conform to the size of the articleas the stamping head is moved downward, and an inking plate for applying ink to the stamping means before each to the size of the article as the stamping head 15 downward movement of the stamping head.
