Aug. 18, 1953 B, PQLAK I PUSH KEY oPERATED HASP Loox Filed June 28, 195o Patented Aug. 1s, 1953 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE Koh-I-Noor, Spojene Kovoprumyslove Zavody, narodni podnik,; Prague, Czechoslovakia Application June 28, 1950, Serial No. 170,773 In Czechoslovakia July 12, 1949 My invention relates to a hasp lock for trunks, portfolios or the like, which in its function and construction is more simple and more dependable than the known locks of that type and which moreover meets substantially better all requirements placed on the pleasant appearance of such locks.
The main feature of my new lock consists in a push key operated arresting device for a longitudinally slidable locking member which cooperates with the hasp of the lock. Said arresting device includes a particularly constructed ratchet or star wheel which upon each insertion of the push key is partially turned and alternately blocks and releases said longitudinally slidable locking member.
The objects of my invention, its construction and its mode of operation will be more fully understood from the following specification when read with the accompanying drawing in which one embodiment is illustrated.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ratchet or star wheel used in the lock mechanism, and
Figs. 5 and 6 show in front view said ratchet orstar wheel and the parts cooperating therewith in unlocking and locking operations, respectively.
As shown in Fig. 1 my improved lock comprises a casing 2 which houses the lock mechanism and is secured to the body I of a trunk, briefcase or other receptacle, and a hasp i which is pivotally supported by a hasp plate Il attached to the cover 3 of said receptacle. The hasp II is provided with a loop 5 which projects from the back thereof to enter the front opening 6 of the casing 2 and to receive the locking bolt or other locking member I when the hasp i is swung into the locking position shown in Fig. 3. A spring S hold the hasp i in open position as illustrated in Fig. l and forces the hasp into said open position as soon as the locking member 'I releases said loop 5.
The locking member or bolt 'i forms an integral part of a sliding member 8 located in the casing 2 and is held in locking position for engagement with the loop 5 by the loop spring i5 which rests with one arm in a shoulder II attached to the casing 2 and presses with its other arm against the locking bolt l or any other part of the sliding member 8. The locking bolt l has a beveled 3 Claims. (Cl. Y0-74) front face so that the loop 5 when pressing thereagainst will temporarily push back said bolt l against the force of said spring I0 until the bolt 'I will be forced to engage the loop 5. The sliding member 8 projects from the casing 2 to form a iinger piece 8 which may be manually actuated to move the bolt l out of engagement with the loop 5 when the lock is in unlocked position.
The sliding member 8, or the bolt or other locking member 'I integral therewith, is provided with a blocking pin or other arresting member I2 which projects therefrom and cooperates with a ratchet or star wheel I3. This wheel I3 is rotatably mounted on a pivot I4 within the casing 2 and is displaceable thereupon in axial direction. A helical spring I5, however, presses said star wheel I3 against the bottom wall of the casing 2. As shown in Fig. 4 said ratchet or star wheel I 3 has on its circular face a plurality of axially extending teeth I8 and between each pair of said teeth radial notches 2| which extend inwardly from the rim thereof.` These radial notches 2I are adapted to receive the blocking pin or similar projection I2 when the same is aligned therewith vand said teeth I8 are adapted to cooperate with the bit Il of a push key IS which may be introduced into the lock casing 2 through the coinciding lateral opening 22 and 23 on the casing 2 and the hasp 4, respectively. The end of said key I3 may be provided with a longitudinally incision 24 to cooperate with a tting stationary arresting projection 2li. This projection 24 will permit the key I 6 to be pushed with the lock only so far to eiect a turning of the wheel I3 by one tooth I8 or pitch. The width of said incision 2li and projection 24 may be varied in different locks so that each lock will be operable only by its appropriate push key I6. A pawl 20 arranged in the casing 2 will prevent any incidental backward turning of the wheel I3.
'The described hasp lock operates as follows:
The hasp 4 is pressed downward against the casing 2 from the position shown in Fig. 1 into the position shown in Fig. 3. The loop 5 upon entering the casing 2 through the opening 6 presses against the beveled front face of the bolt l, presses the same back and receives the same under the action of the spring Ill. The said backward movement of the bolt 1 is possible because the ratchet or star wheel I3 being in the unlocking position shown in Fig. 5 will permit the pin I2 to enter temporarily one of the radial notches 2l aligned therewith. When the key i3 is withdrawn from the casing 2 its bit Il will slide along the inclined back face I9 of the preceding tooth I8 and Will raise the wheel I3 against the force of the spring I5 Without turning the same as it is secured against backward movement by the pawl 28 which cooperates with the tooth I8. The lock will remain in unlocked position until the push key Itis again introduced into the casing and the ratchet Wheel I3 is turned'by the bit il of the key I6 by one pitch into the position shown in Fig. 6. In this position the rim of the ratchet Wheel I3 will block any. displacement of the pin I2 thus preventing the lockingk bolt 'I from disengaging the loop 5. Whenthereafter the push key i6 is Withdrawn from theI casing V2 its bit Il will again slide along-the inclined,y back face I9 of the preceding tooth I8 and will raise the wheel i3 against the force Vofthe,spring I5 without turning the same as it is secured by the pawl 26. The lock will remain thereafter in locked position until the push key I6 is reintroduced into the casing 2 and the Wheel I3 is turned by another pitch into the position shown in Fig. 5.

What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a push key operated hasp lock of the type described including a `longitudinally slidaole locking member, an arresting device for said locking member, said arresting device comprising in combination. a projection extending from said locking member; a'ratchet or star Wheel revolvable about an axis perpendicular to the direction of slide motion of'said projection; ratchet teeth on the face of said Wheel for cooperation with a bit on a push key upon its insertion into the lock for rotating said Wheel; the said Wheel arranged to block with its circular rim the slide motion of said projection andbeing'mcunted'for slidable displacement in axial direction; a` spring for holding said Wheel in= engagement with said bit; and said wheel having a'plur'ality of Anotches radially extending inwardly from the rim thereof to receive said projection AWhen aligned therewith and to thus allow displacement of said locking member, said arresting device comprising in combination a projection extending from said locking; member; a ratchet or star wheel revolv- Yable iabout an axis perpendicular to the direction of slide motion of said projection; ratchet teeth on thefaceof said Wheel for cooperation with a bitonapllsh key upon its insertion into the lock for rotating said Wheel; a pavvl cooperating with said wheel to prevent its back turning upon withdrawal of said key from the lock; the said wheel arranged to block lwith its circular rim the slide motion of said projection and being mounted forfslidable displacement in axial direction; a spring for holding said Wheel in engagement with said bit; and said Wheel having a plurality of notches radially extending inwardly from the rim thereof to receive said projection when aligned therewith and to thus permit displacement vof said locking member, each one of said notches being arranged after each second ratchet tooth.
