7 Claims.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in a combined handle and lock -and has for its principal object the provision of lan improved structure oi this character which 'will 5 be highly eiiicient in use and economical inmanufacture.
Among the several objects of the invention is the provision of a. lock mechanism which consists oi comparatively few parts.
A still further object of the 'invention is the provision of a lock mechanism adapted to be associated with a handle for operating lifting mechanism of a slidable latch bolt, the lock mechanism being of such structure as to permit the latch bolt to automatically return to latched position.
The present invention constitutes an improvement over that disclosed in my companion applications Serial No. 7,384 and Serial No. 7,382 filed February 20, 1935, in the United States Patent Office for Letters Patent on Combined yhandles and locks.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional detail view similar to that shown in Fig. 8 but illustrating parts thereof in different position;

Fig. 6 is a sectional detail View similar to Fig. 5 and taken substantially on line 6-6 of Fig. 3 but illustrating parts of the mechanism ina different relative position with respect to each other;
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail View of the same taken substantially on line l-I of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional detail View of the same taken substantially on line 8 8 of Fig. 6.
Referring now particularly to the drawings illustrating the preferred form of construction of my invention, a handle is indicated at I and this handle includes an enlarged portion I I providing a housing I2 within which the lock mechanism hereinafter described is conned.
The handle I0 further provides ear portions I3 perforated for the passage of connecting ele- (Cl. .T0-29) ments Y'HI to .effectuate connection between the handle rand door with which it is associated.
The housing I2 includes a rear plate I5. Adjacent to and parallel to this plate I between suitable guiding elements I6, as shown in Figs. 5 3 and 4, is slidably arranged a latch lift I'I including an inwardly turned nger engaging lip I8 from which extends upwardly a iin or web i9.
At the lower end of this lift Il is a laterally extending pin adapted to have connection with 10 a latch bar 2l. Mounted in the housing I2 is a cylinder 22 having the usual key slot 23 and within which are arranged tumbler pins 24 corresponding end portions of which are adapted to engage a locking groove 25 formed in a barrel l5 26 supported within the housing I2 and within which -is arranged the cylinder '22.
Extending from the plate I5 are adjacent pins 21. These pins project through slots 28 formed in a plate 29 slidable transversely of the pins in 20` the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
This plate '29 is provided with a recessed portion 39 to provide a shoulder 3l engageabfle by an operating stud 32 carried by and operable with the lcylinder 22 whereby when the cylinder 25 22 is rotated by action of the key 33 this pin 32 will engage the shoulder 3I and move the plate 29 to the position shown in Fig. 6 against the action of a spring 34 which spring 34 functions to move the plate 29 in an opposite direction.
The. plate 29 is provided with a depending portion 35 and this depending portion 35 provides a locking finger 36 normally disposed in the path of movement of the iin or web I9.
Formedin the lift I'i is an elongated slot 31 35 and operable in this slot 3l is a supporting stud 39. Pivotally mounted upon this stud 39 is a spring urged latch bolt 40 adapted for latching engagement with the locking finger 36 to retain the plate 29 in the position shown in Fig. 6 40' against the action of the spring 34.
In operation to permit lifting of the lift Il to in turn move the latch bolt 2l from latched position, the key is inserted through the key slot 23 to a position to engage the tumber pins 24 45 whereupon to disengage these tumbler pins 24 from engagement in the groove 25 thus permitting rotation of the cylinder 22.
This rotation of the cylinder 22 brings the pin 32 into engagement with the shoulder 3| 5o whereupon further rotation oi the pin 32 will move the plate 29 against the action of the spring 34 to dispose the locking finger 36 from the path of movement of the n I9. When the parts are in this position (as in Fig. 6) the key 55 this being effected by a slight upward movement of the handle l and web I9; this upward movement of the web I9 causing the same to engage the latch member 40 and thereby pivot the lat-` ter (clockwise, Fig. 6) out of engagement with the web I9, whereupon the tensioned spring 34 will return the latch plate 29-35-36 into its initial position (as in Fig.
When the locking finger 36 has been moved to its extreme position from the path of movement of the fin I9 the spring urged latch bolt 40 will engage the locking finger 36 and releasably retain the plate 29 in the position indicated in Fig. 6.
The upward lift of the lift Il brings the iin I9 against the spring urged latch bolt 40 and at a predetermined time further movement of the lift l1 will disengage the spring urged latch bolt 40 from the locking nger 36 thereby releasing the plate 29 for return movement by action of the spring 34, thus permitting this plate 29 when the lift is released for movement into latching position to return Ywith its locking finger 36 in a position to lock the lift against movement.
In this operation of the device, it is manifest that the locking of the lift against movement 'into latch lifting position is automatic in its operation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation land modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the 'scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters .Patent is:
l. A device of the class described including a YVhandle having a latch lift associated therewith,
lock mechanism associated with the handle and including a slidably supported locking member for the lift, and means for latching the locking member in unlocking position with respect to the llift, said latching means being disposed in the path of movement of the lift and operable by the lift to release the locking member for movement into locking position with respect to the lift.
2. A device of the class described including a `handle having a latch lift associated therewith provided with a web, lock mechanism associated with the handle and including a slidably supported locking member for the lift, and means for latching the locking member in unlocking position with respect to the lift, said latching means being disposed in the path of movement of the web of the lift and operable bythe lift to release the locking member for movement into locking position with respect to the lift.
3. Locking mechanism including a handle providing a housing, a lift slidably associated withV the housing, a plate slidably arranged within the housing and including a locking finger disposed in the path of movement of the lift, a latch member pivotally supported within the housing and adapted to engage the locking nger when disposed in unlocking position with respect to the lift, said latch member when disposed to retain the locking finger in unlocking position with respect to the lift being disposed in the path of and operable by the lift to release the locking fingerV for movement into locking position with respect to the lift.
4. Lock mechanism structure, a plate slidably associated with the structure and including a locking finger adapted to lock the lift against movement, a lock structure including an operating pin, the said plate being provided with a shoulder adapted for operative engagement with the pin whereby to be moved from locking position with respect to the lift by operation of the lock mechanism, and means operable by the lift for releasably holding the locking member from locking engagement with respect to the lift.
5. Lock mechanism including an enclosing structure, a latch lift slidably associated with the structure and including a web, a plate slidably associated with the structure and including a locking nger adapted to lock the lift against movement, a, lock structure including an operating pin, the said plate being provided with a shoulder adapted for operative engagement with the pin whereby to be moved from locking position with respect to the lift by operation of the lock mechanism, and means operable by the web of the lift for releasably holding the locking member from locking engagement with respect to the lift.
6. Lock mechanism including an enclosing structure, a latch lift slidably associated with the structure, a plate slidably associated with the structure and including a locking nger adapted to lock the lift against movement, a lock structure-including an operating pin, the said plate being provided with means adapted for operative engagement with the pin whereby to be moved from locking Vposition with respect to the lift by operation of the lock mechanism, and means operable by the lift for releasably holding the locking member from locking engagement with respect to the lift.
