The object of the present vinvention is gener` ally to improve and simplify the construction and operation of door locks of the character described,
"and particularly to provide an improved form of stop member carried by the housing, whereby the interlock'between the retractor plate and the spindle may be automatically retained during 4all normal operations of thelock and manually released when removal ofthe spindle is required.

If it is desired to remove the spindle, for instance, for the purpose of repairing or inspect- `ing the lock, it can be accomplished from the inner face of the door lock by inserting a pin 6D through a hole 6l formed in the inside plate 3 of the lock housing; when the pin is thus inserted and pushed inwardly it engages one of the legs or arms 56 of the stop member, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and it imparts a rocling movement thereto which swings the arms 56 out of alignment with the inner end of the head member i4 of the retractor plate. In this position an operator can exert nger pressure on the latch bolt B and push it inwardly beyond a normal retracted position, as shown in Fig. 3. In this position the shoulders I6 of the head member I4 will assume a position rearwardly of the enlarged portion of the spindle 23 and the spindle may then be removed endwise through the opening I2 formed in the retractor plate b and the bearings and 2| of the lock housing-that is, provided one or another of the knobs has previously been removed.
The movement imparted to the stop member by means of the pin 60 is a rocking movement, and by imparting the rocking movement as previously stated, the arms 58 are moved out of the path of travel of the inner end of the head member lil, The movement, however, that the pin is removed, the stop member will return to the normal position shown in Fig. l, as the pressure of the springs 5i and 52 will return it to this position. The rocking movement is identical to a pivotal movement, but no pivot is required as the base of the stop member or plate 55 may obviously be rocked on the bar 1, thereby eliminating any hinged or pivotal connection.
In my prior Patent No. 2,062,766, a stop member was also employed normally to limit inward movement of the retractor plate and the latch bolt carried thereby. The vstop member was, however, pivotally mounted on the retractor plate and was movable with the retractor plate. the structure functioned to perfection, its `structure and mounting were complicated when comparison is made tothe present stop member. This stop member is supported by the housing and requires no extra springs to maintain it in normal position. Thus it is more substantial and far simpler to construct and to mount in the lock. This stop member is the main improved feature of the present application.
While certain features of my invention have been more or less speciiically described and illustrated, I wish it understood that changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, and that the materials and iinish ofv the several parts 'may be such as vthe experience of the manufacturer or varying conditions-of use may demand.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lock of the character described, a housthe rcckable stop member, said spring normally.
tending to maintain the latch bolt mechanism in a projected position and the stop member in a position to limit inward movement of the latch bolt mechanism.
2. In a lock of the character described, a housf ing,a latch bolt-mechanism mounted for reciprocal movement therein, a stop member carried by the housing and normally disposed in the path of movement of the latch bolt mechanism to limit inward movement of said mechanism with relation to the housing, said stop member being movable to permit extended inward movement of the latch bolt mechanism beyond a normal retracted position, and a common spring interposed between the latch bolt mechanism and the stop member, said spring normally tending to maintain the latch bolt mechanism in a projected position and the stop member in a position to limit inward movement of the latch bolt mechanism.
3. In a lock of the character described, a housing, a latch bolt mechanism mounted for reciprocal movement therein, said housing having an inner end, a plate supported at the inner end of the housing, an arm on said plate extending into the path of movement of the latch bolt mechanism to limit inward movement thereof beyond a normal retracted position, said plate and arm being rockable to move the arm out of the path of movement of the latch bolt mechanism to permit extended inward movement of the latch bolt While mechanism, and a spring interposed between the latch bolt mechanism and the plate, said spring normally maintaining the latch bolt in an extended position and the arm in a position to limit inward movement of the latch bolt mechanism.
4. In a lock of the character described, a housing, a. latch bolt mechanism mounted for reciprocal movement therein, said housing having an inner end, a plate supported at the inner end of the housing, an arm on said plate extending into the path of movement of the latch bolt mechanism to limit inward movement thereof beyond a normalretracted position, said plate and arm being rockable to move the arm out of the path of movement of the latch bolt mechanism to permit extended inward movement ofthe latch bolt mechanism, and a` spring engageable with thev rockable plate to normally maintain the arm in a position to limit inward movement of the latch bolt mechanism. f f WALTER.
