Description

July 21, 1953 s. L. ATKINS DRINKING VESSEL Filed Dad. 6, 1945 INVENTOR firm/a [AWAf/VCE 4747M).
ATI'ORNEY Patented July 21,- 1 953 Samuel Lawrence Atkins; New York, N. Y. 7. Application December'6, 1945, Serial No. 633,234
This invention relates to drinking vessels, and particularly to paper drinking cups. 7 I
An object of the present invention is to provide a paper drinking cup which is so constructed and arranged that it strains the liquid as it flows into the drinking "spout;
Another object is to provide a'paper drinking cup having a filter or strainer forming an integral part of the cup without changingthe conventional appearance of the cup. 7
A feature of the inventionis the'foldable spout which closes the strainer portion of the cup when not ready for use, and unfolds or opens up in the drinking position.
A description of the invention follows in coni junction with a drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation view of one embodiment of a drinking cup provided with a strainer and a'foldable spout;
Fig. 2 is another view of the cup of Fig. 1 with the spout unfoldedand in the drinkingposition; Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 along the line 3 -3; Fig. 4 shows another embodiment of a drinking cup in accordance with-theinvention;
Fig. 5-is a section of Fig. 4 along the line 5-5; Fig. 6 shows the foldable spout and strainer arrangement of the'invention applied to the removable lidor top closure element of a vessel;
and I Fig. '7 illustrates the lid of Fig. 6 positioned upon a beverage receptacle and ready for drinking by a user. I
Throughout the figures of the drawing, the same parts are represented by the same reference characters.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, illustrating one embodiment of the invention, there is shown a paper composition drinking cup 10 of generally cylindrical form and conventional appearance, except for the features of the invention now to be described. On one side of the cup, located near the top, there are provided numerous holes or apertures 12 in the cup. These holes l2 extend over a relatively small area and constitute a strainer or filter for the liquid to be poured from the cup; A foldable paper spout I3 is provided on the outside of the cup. This spout, when folded, as shown in Fig. 1, tightly seals the'holes l2 and prevents the liquid from escaping through the strainer. .In the unfolded position of the spout I3, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the liquid is per- 7 mitted to flow through the strainer, and the spout forms a pouring-lip to be placed in the mouth of the drinker. 3 h
Spout l3 has a lower portion which folds m- 1 Claim. 01. 2294) wardly and is adhesively secured to the cup on the bottom and two sides. The upper portion of the spout I3 is provided with two oppositely disposed arms A which are slidable within straps S forming part of or fastened to the cup, as shown. The arms A have a flange-like extending portion A which prevents the arms from sliding through the straps S when the spout is unfolded, as shown inFig.2.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a" preferred arrangement of the invention comprising a foldable paper spout [3 on the outside of cup I!) and in the same relative position as spout [3 of Fig. 1. Spout l3 has its bottom and two sides folded inwardly and adhesively secured to the cup I0.
It should be noted that the spout of Fig. 4 eliminates the necessity for the arms and straps of Fig. 1.
Figs. 6 and 7 show the paper foldable spout l3 adhesively secured on three sides to the lid or.
closure element of a paper receptacle [0 for holding liquids. The lid is provided with holes or apertures I2 to form a strainer or filter. When the spout I3 is in the closed position, it securely seals the holes. When the spout is in the drinking position, as shown in Fig. 7, the spout is unfolded and forms a pouring lip for the liquid passing through the holes.
What is claimed is:
A paper composition drinking cup having holes near the top forming a strainer, spaced longitudinally disposed straps on said cup on opposite sides of said strainer adjacent the upper edge of the cup, and a paper composition foldable spout on the outside of said cup and covering the area of said holes, said spout having its lower end and sides adhesively secured to the cup and having oppositely disposed arms at its upper end and slidably secured under said straps.
