Dec. 22, 1942. w. G. JPsoN PAPER' CUP .Filed Dec. 16, 1940 ,l 172% 2f 4, Mm www Patented Dec. 22, 1942 PAPER CUP William G. Jopson, Williamsport, Pa., assgnor to C. A. Reed Company, Williamsport, Pa., .a corporation of Delaware Application December 16, 1940, Serial No. 370,239
3 Claims.
This invention relates to cups intended for single use and such as are commonly made of paper, and has for an object to associate a handle With the cup, so formed that it may ,be pressed closely adjacent to the outside of the cup so as not to interfere with nesting of the cups in a stack asior packaging for shipment and dispensing, but which handle can be pulled outwardly into loop form without detachment from the cup when desired for handle use. ticular utility when the cup contains hot liquids which prevent holding of the cup between the lingers of the user.
A particular object of this invention is to so Such a handle is of partaining strips I and Il. These may -be formed by cutting pairs of slots I2 and I3 through the outer layer 3 of the cup side wall and these strips I0 and I I are free from the inner wall end portion 2 so that the end portions of a handle strip I5 may be engaged ,back of the strips I0 and II and between them and the wall end portion 2. The handle strip I5 is formed as a single strip of cardboard, or the like, symmetrical at opposite ends, this strip being of sufficient Width to be inserted through the slots I2 and I3 and having widened end portions I6 presenting shoulders I1.
The upper slots I 2 are so formed as to leave upwardly extending rounded portions I8 to the strips form the handle that it -may be made up sepa- I0 and II, these serving as upward extensions berately from the cup and may be rmly secured hind which the end portions I6 of the handle strip thereto by a mere interlocking engagement and may be readily inserted. without requiring the use of an adhesive or a As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the upper end separate fastener. portion of the handle strip is downwardly turned A further object is to provide a handle conand is inserted through the upper slot I2 back structed identically at opposite ends and with of the strip I0 and is brought down into the cup parts formed for cooperation with the handle slot I3 and the bend 20 is sprung in under the such that the top end of the handle is rmly rebead 'I, thus to prevent undesired lifting of the tained substantially rigid with the cup While the upper end portion of the handle when it has lower end is free to slide within limits relative t0 25 once been inserted in position. The upper edge the cup so as to allow nesting of the cups when ci the strip I0, beneath the bend J is suindesired or extended into loop form convenient for ciently close to prevent any substantial downgrasping. ward motion of the upper end of the handle For a more complete understanding of this instrip I5. The lower end of the handle strip is Vention, reference may be had to the accompanyalso downwardly turned and is inserted through lng drawing in whichthe lower slot I2 behind the cross strip II. It Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handled cup will be noted that the presence of the handle embodying this invention. strip back of the cross strips I0 and I I serves Figure 2 is a view partly in side elevation and to deflect the central portions of these cross partly in section on line 2 2 of Figure 1. 35 strips outwardly forming somewhat sharply de- Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1. fined curvatures at 2| adjacent to their ends; Figure 4 is a plan View of a handle strip before there these strip portions turn inwardly toward application to the Cup. their junctions with the end portion 3. 'I'he Figure 5 is a View similar to a portion of Figure shoulders I'I at the upper end of the handle strip 3 but to alarger scale. 40 tend to remain in lateral alinement with the Referring to the drawing, at I is shown a cup handle strip adjacent thereto so that these having its side wall formed of a strip of paper shoulders spring outwardly beneath the portions having its inner and outer ends 2 and 3, respec- 2| and prevent ready upward motion of the hantively, in overlapping relation and secured todle strip which would detach it from behind gether as by a suitable cement. Within the lower the cross strip I0. This engagement, as well as portion of vthe cup is a base member 4 which may the engagement of the bent portion 2D beneath be formed as a disk with a downturned margin 5 the bead l, iirmly secures the upper end portion secured Within a marginal portion 6 of the side of the handle strip Without the necessity of any wall of the cup. Likewise, as shown, the top edge adhesive or mechanical fasteners. The shouloi" the side wall is turned outwardly and downders Il at the lower end of the handle strip wardly to form an external bead 'I which not only are in position to engage with the curved end stiffens the cup structure but presents a smooth portions 2| of the cross strip II, thus preventing rounded surface to the lips of the user. detachment of the strip at its lower end, al- As shown best in Figures 2, 3 and 5 the cup side though permitting it to slide between the operawall is provided with a pair of spaced handle retive full line position shown in Figure 2 and the dotted line position shown wherein the handle strip is collapsed sufciently closely to the side of the cup so that it may be nested with others in a stack for packing, shipment, or dispensing from a stack in a suitable dispensing device.
The construction of the horizontal retaining strips I0 and Il as a portion of the outer layer of the lapping ends of the cup side wall is not claimed herein per se, this forming subject matter of my application Serial No. 237,034 led October 26, 1938.
From the foregoing description of an embodiment of this invention, it should be evident to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications might be made without `departing from the spirit or scope of this invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A paper cup having a wall member provided with an outwardly projecting top marginal bead and provided with a transverse strip element free for a portion of its length from said wall member, and a handle strip having its upper end portion downwardly turned beneath said bead and extending between said free portion and said wall member and having a widened extremity beneath said transverse strip in position to engage thereagainst and prevent detachment of said handle strip, and means for securing the lower end portion of said handle strip to` said cup beneath said upper end portion, said handle strip where said upper end portion is downwardly turned being positioned adjacent to and beneath said bead in position to be held against upward movement by said bead.
2. A paper cup having a wall member provided with overlapping ends secured together, the outer of said ends having two pairs of vertically spaced slots therethrough defining upper and lower horizontal strips free from the inner of said ends, and a handle strip of a width to pass through said slots between said strips and said inner end 'and having widened end portions, each end of said handle strip being extended downwardly and back of one of said horizontal strips.
3. A paper cup having a wall member provided with overlapping ends secured together and an outwardly extending bead about its upper end, the outer of said ends having two pairs of vertically spaced slots therethrough defining upper and lower horizontal strips free from the inner of said ends, and a handle strip of a width to pass between the free portions of said strips and the cup wall and having widened end portions, each end of said handle strip being extended downwardly and back of one of said horizontal strips, and the upper end portion of said handle strip lying beneath said bead and being prevented thereby from upward movement relative to the upper of said cup strips.
