Description

E. CHETHAM May 8, 1928.
STRAINER Filed Aug. 21, 1926 Patented May 8, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
EDXVARD CHETHAM, OF SOUTH KENSINGT ON, LONDON, ENGLAND.
STRAINER.
1 Application filed August 21, 1926, Serial No. 130,701, and in Great Britain August 31,1925;
This invention relates to a new or improved combined stepped-lid (i. e. a member to fit in the usual lid-opening of a kettle or the like, or to fit in the mouth of aeup, jug or the like) and strainer for ktattles'and cooking utensils and other usages. The object of the invention is to provide a straining device with the known stepped-lid for mat-ion of the underpart or bottom thereof whereby it is adapted to lit into apertures of various sizes in kettles and other receptacles or appliances.
Broadly, the invention consists in incorporating a strainingdevice with the lowermost step or av downwardly depending pro-- longation of said lowermost step, the said strainer device being either integral with or attached to the stepped-1i d, the lid being provided, if desired, with a suitable cover. It is apparent that a number of constructions embodying the essence of my invention, namely a combined stepped-lid and'strainer, may be provided.
An embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, Wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical'section on the line :20, 7 of Figure 2; and,
Iliguro Q is a plan view.
In the form illustrated, the lowermost step 1. of the lid is drawn out in elongated manner to form a down *ardly depending ehaniher in the bottom of which a strainer 2 is provided. The strainer, which is construct ed of gauze or is otherwise provided with a plurality of perforations. may be fixedly secured to. or made detachable from the sides of the elongated chamber, which sides may be cylindrical-or tapered as shown, as desired. A detachable strainer is illustrated wherein fingers 3 on the strainerfranie are bent'round an annular flange or sea-ting at the bottom of the tubular wall 1, The wall 1 may itself be. perforated either in addition to or in lieu of the bottom 2.
In a modified form. the whole of the elongated chamber 1 could be detachable from the lid proper. As an alternative, theeloir gatedcliamber 1 may be dispensed with and the strainer device, either fixed ordetachably placed in the bottom of the lowermost step 4 of the lid portion proper. The strainer proper 2 may be provided with a flat or bulgedsurtaice.
The fixed and rigid top which is usually provided with stepped-lids across the top opening 5 is dispensed with and a separate movable cover, of the drop-in flanged type 1 or a hinged-flap cover, may be substituted thci'eior. A plain uncovered opening is, however, shown. An arched handle may be provided to lift the stepped-lid and strainer together, same being secured to the top of the lid pi'oper, the handle'heiiig mounted on v oppositely disposed pivot pins so that it may be swung down out of the way of the movable cover when not in. use. Or a horizontally disposed handle portion 6, asshown, may be furnished.
iie combination above referred to and described is oi universal use for straining all hindsiot substances, but it is especially applicable for use as an infuser for tea, coilee and the like. It may be employed as a petrol or'tlie like strainer for pouring devices,
tunnels and so forth.
A device adapted for use as a strainer and for otherv purposes comprising a cylinder having a slightly tapering elongated plain body portion fitted at its lower end with a strainer member and formed at its upper end with a series of Qflset shoulders of progressively increasing diameter to provide a. flaredfunnel-like receiving mouth for the body, and one edge of the uppermost shoulder being laterally offset to provide a finger "gripping portion.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature hereto this 11th day of August 1926,
EDlVABD CHETHAM.
