One of the objects of the present invention 1s the provision of a combination vwallet land rpurse of improved construction,particularly in respect to the way the coin purse and wallet are :arranged and attached in -relation to each other for simplifying the construction and enhancing the durability of the arti-cle.V

' Another object is the provision of :a combination wallet and purse which is so constructed as to enable the elimination of the usual U-frames of purses and, as a result, to reduce the thickness of the article in the region of theV coin purse and tol obviate a source of weakness in articles of this type as heretofore constructed.

In accordance with the present invention, the opposite side walls I8 and 20, which dene the main wallet pocket, for paper money, are joined directlyk to each other at their longitudinal side edges 22, for substantially the full length thereof,

and are joined at their end edges 24. Preferably, said sidefand4 end edges are secured by stitching as indicated at 26. In the presently preferred form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1, the stitching of the side edges 22 terminates short of the end ofthe article at which the releasable closure for the mouth of the coin purse 28 isprovided, and at sai-d end of the article metal clips A further object is generally to improve the construction of a combination wallet and purse and to provide an improved closure for the purse.

The above and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be fully understood from the following description considered in connection withl the* accompanying illustrative drawings. 1

Referring now to the ydrawings in detail the combination wallet and purse IU is in general of the type which'may'be folded 4from the flat form illustrated in Fig. 1 to the folded form illustrated in Fig. 2. Suitable means, here shown as a tab I2 provided with a snap fastener member I4 releasably engageable with a companionl snap fastener member i6, may be provided for releasably holding the article in its folded form.

The coin purse 23 is preferably formed by integral parts of-'the side walls I8 and 23 of the main wallet pocket. More lparticularly, the inner side walls 32 vand 34 which define the coin purse are constituted by infolded portions of the side walls I8 and 20, respectively, the fold lines being indicated at 36 and 33. The infoldedportions 32 and 34 are joined at their side edges di) and at their inner end edges 42 preferably by stitching 44. Lines "of perforations 45 are provided in the blanks for side walls I8, 32 and Ell, 3ft at the fold lines 36 and 38 to facilitate folding of the blanks and to facilitate the stitching operations relation; The opposite endsof each spring closure member 5l) terminate adjacent to, but just short of, the clips 3G at the side edge portions of walls I8, 32, 20 and 341 which are secured together by'said clips, so that transverse neXing or vbowing of said spring strips is not interfered with by said clips and also so that the clips may tightly se-` cure the side edges of portions I8, 32, 2li` and 3A; together at each end of the two tunnels 46 and 48. It will be understood that spring .'closure'members 50 are'inserted into their companion tunnels through ends thereof whichv are open before clips 30 are attached to the article at the ends of said tunnels. It will be noted that the purse extends into the wallet suflicient to constitutes. divider therefonfor example, to separate bills of large denomination from bills of smaller denomination.

The tunnels 46 and 48 are formed by adjacent confronting end portions of walls i8 and 32 and walls 2E! and 34, respectively, preferably at the mouth or outer end of the purse, by stitching 52 and 54 spaced inwardly of the fold lines 35 and 36, respectively. The upper sides of the tunnels are also preferably stitched adjacent the fold lines 38, 38 inwardly of the line of perfora-` tions as indicated Vat 56 and 51,-said last mentioned stitching serving to maintainv the folds at lines 35 and 38 in sharply creased condition.. v

It will be understood that spring strips 5U hold the confronting inner sides of tunnels 45 and 48 in close abutting relation for closing the mouth of the purse. When the purse is to be opened pressure is applied to the opposite side edgel portions of the article at the opposite ends of said tunnels, i. e. by pressing on the clips 30, as a result of which the spring 'closure members 5i) bow away from each other and open the mouth of the purse. Upon release of the pressure, spring members 59 automatically straighten out longitu dinally thereof and close the mouth of the purse. Safety closure ribs 58 and 6i] are also preferably provided on the side walls 32 and 34, respectively,

` for the full width thereof on the inside of the purse adjacent tunnels 45, 48. These ribs are in adjacent laterally offset relation and overlap each other when the mouth of the purse is closed and thus provide a barrier to the accidental passage of a coin or other article out ofthe purse between tunnels 4E and 48 when the. purse is closed. These safety ribs are formed by narrow integral folded portions of side walls 32 and 34 stitching through the folds as indicated at 52 to maintain said folds. A line of slits 63 is provided in the blanks at each fold line 64 at which ribs 58 and 60 are to be provided to facilitate the folding A and stitching.

The opening for the main pocket wallet is provided in one'side wall thereof, here shown as side wall I8, as indicated at 56. Said opening is ordinarily provided with a slide operated closure or zipper 68. It will be understood that the side walls 32 and 34 are preferably not secured to sides I8 and 2D except at the closure of the purse.

It will be noted that the -combined wallet and purse is made, as described above, from two blanks of sheet material cut to provide the side walls of the wallet and the side walls of the purse, one of said blanks having a part for one side wall I8 of the wallet and one side wall 32 of the purse, and the other blank having a part for the other side wall 2i? of the wallet and the other side wall 34 of the purse. Said blanks may be made of leather, fabric, plastic, etc. The blanks are preferably provided with lines of perforations or slits at the fold lines 35 and 64 as hereinbefore explained to facilitate foldingof the blanks at said fold lines and to facilitate the stitching in the regions of said fold lines.

As indicated in Fig. 8 the clips 3D may be omitted and the sideedges 22 may be stitched to the side edges of walls 32 and 34 at the ends of tunnels 45 and 48. In this case each spring member is preferably attached by adhesive to a fibre strip 10. The latter has a narrow portion 12, which abuts and is secured to the face of the companion spring strip U, and wider projecting portions 'i4 which are secured at the ends of the tunnels by the stitching at said edges.

Thus it is seen that the construction provided as hereinbefore described in accordance with the present invention is well adapted to accomplish the objects thereof. It will be understood, however, that various changes in form and in details of construction may be made without departing from the underlying idea or principles of this invention within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A combined wallet and purse article, comprising inner side walls joined at their inner end edges and open at their outer end edges, and opposed side walls having adjacent side edges joined to each other and to said inner side walls atthe opposite ends of said outer end edges thereof, said opposed side walls extending from said outer end edges of said inner walls beyond the inner end edges of the latter and defining a main wallet pocket, one of said opposed side walls being provided with an opening for access to said main wallet pocket, the outer end portions of said inner and opposed walls having tunnels therebetween extending transversely thereof, and spring strips in said tunnels, respectively, for releasably fastening said outer end edges of said inner walls to each other, and strips of sheet material secured to said spring strips, respectively, and projecting beyond the opposite ends of the latter and secured to said tunnels at the outer ends of said tunnels.

2. A combined wallet and purse article comprising. opposed side walls secured together throughout their longitudinal side edges and at one end thereof to define a main wallet pocket for paper currency, an opening defined in one of said side walls for access to said main pocket, said side walls being mutually unsecured at said other end thereof, inner walls extending from said other end of said side walls, respectively, to form an inner pocket which is smaller than said main pocket, said inner pocket vbeing closed throughout its opposite side edges and at its inner end` and having an opening at said other end of said wallet pocket, said inner pocket serving to close said other end of said main wallet pocket and extending therein to provide a separating member for said main wallet pocket, and fastener means for said inner pocket at said other end of said main wallet pocket for releasably closing the entrance to said inner pocket, said fastener means comprising transversely extending tunnels at said other end of said main wallet pocket, spring strips disposed in said tunnels, respectively, and strips of sheet material secured to said spring strips, respectively, and projecting beyond the opposite ends of the latter and secured to said tunnels at the outer ends thereof.

A combined wallet and purse article cornprising opposed -side walls secured together throughoutA their longitudinal side edges and at one end thereof to define a main wallet pocket for paper currency, an opening defined in one of said side walls for access to said main pocket, said side walls being mutually unsecured at said other end thereof, innerV walls extending from said other end of said side wallsy respectively, to forman inner pocket which is smaller than said main pocket, said inner pocket being closed throughout its-opposite side edges and at its inner end and having an opening at said other end of said wallet pocket, said inner pocket serving to close said other end of said main wallet pocket and extending therein to provide a separating member for said `main wallet pocket, and fastener means for said innerpocket at said other ing tunnels at said other end of said main walletv pocket, said tunnels being defined by confronting wall portions of said opposed side Walls and said inner Walls atsaid other end of said side Walls, respectively, spring strips disposed in'said `tunnels, respectively, and strips of sheet material secured to said spring strips, respectively, and projecting beyond the opposite ends of the latter and secured to said tunnels at the outer ends thereof.

4. A combined Wallet and purse article comprising opposed side Walls secured together throughout their longitudinal side edges and at one end thereof to define a main Wallet pocket for paper currency, an opening defined in one of said side walls for access to said main pocket, said side Walls being mutually unsecured at said other end thereof, inner walls extending from said other end of said side Walls, respectively, to form an inner pocket which is smaller than said main pocket, said inner pocket being closed throughout its opposite side edges and at its inner end and having an opening at said other end of said Wallet pocket, said inner pocket serving to close said other end of said main Wallet pocket and extending therein to provide a separating member for said main wallet pocket, Vand fastener means for said inner pocket at said other end of said main Wallet pocket for releasably closing the entrance to said inner pocket, said fastener means comprising transversely extending tunnels at said other end of said main wallet pocket, spring strips disposed in` said tunnels, respectively, and means Vfor securing said` spring strips against bodily displacement in said tunnels, said side walls being foldable about a transverse fold line intermediate the ends thereof so that said ends Will abut in the folded condition of said side Walls, and means for releasably retaining `said side Walls in said folded'condition.

5. A combined Wallet and purse article comprising opposed side Walls secured together throughout their longitudinal side edges and at one end thereof to define a main Wallet pocket for paper currency, an opening defined in one of said side Walls for access to said main pocket, said side Walls being mutually unsecured at said other lend thereof, inner Walls extending from said other end of said side walls, respectively, to form an inner pocket which is smaller than said main pocket, said inner pocket being closed throughout its opposite side edges and at its inner end and having an opening at said other end of said 4wallet pocket, said inner pocket serving to close said other end of said main Wallet pocket and extending therein to provide a separating member vfor said main wallet pocket, fastener means for said inner pocket at said other end of said main Wallet pocket for releasably closing the entrance to said inner pocket, said fastener means comprising transversely extending tunnels at said other end of said main Wallet pocket, spring strips disposed in said tunnels, respectively, and means for securing said spring strips against bodily displacement in said tunnels, said side Walls being foldable about a transverse fold line intermediate the ends thereof so that said ends Will abut in the folded condition of said side Walls, and means for releasably retaining said side Walls in said folded condition, said releasable securing means comprising a tab disposed between one of said inner and side Walls, respectively, to minimize the bulk of said article at the abutting ends thereof in said folded condition, and complementary fastener means secured to said tab and to one of said side Walls, respectively.
