" Application February 27, 1950, Serial No. 146,525.
' 2 Claims. (Cl. -'308) My present invention relates to hangers and more particularly to a combination drawer hanger and bed slat, the hanger providing slide-ways for mounting drawers under the bed below thesp in that area of wasted space.
These units or bed-slat hanger members may vary in depth and be provided with numerous possible draw combinations as desired by the housewife. Some types of hangers may accommodate more than one horizontal row of drawers of different width and depth than others.
In one type of drawers the drawers may be opened from either side of the bed while other types of drawers are in tandem pairs, each drawer extending half-way across the bed and each drawer of the tandem pair being opened from its own side of the bed. The only difference in the single and the double type of drawers is in the front ends. In one case the front ends of the drawers are close together with just enough separation to slide by each other on the front ends. In the other type each drawer is separated from each other by a narrow space equal to the thickness of the sheet metal of the hanger portions.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a combination drawer hanger and bed slat which not only acts as a bed slat upon which rests a bed spring but also from which hangers are formed to provide slide-ways for drawers below the spring.
Another object is to provide a combination drawer hanger and bed slat which has all the portable and removeable characteristics of a bed slat from which maybe assembled drawer hangers.
Other objects and novel features comprising the construction and operation of my invention will be more apparent as the description of the same progresses.
In the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a bed to Which a plurality of drawers of the close fitting type are mounted;
Fig. 2 shows the same bed as in Fig. 1 with the drawers removed and showing the hanger drawer slide-Ways exposed;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a bed having close fitting drawers in which there are more than one size of drawer and several rows;
Fig. 4 shows the same bed as Fig. 3 with the drawers removed and showing the hanger drawer slide-ways exposed.
Fig. 5 is another side elevation of a bed illustrating a different combination of; dr awersflfln this type the drawers are slightly spaced apart and maybe slidffroni either side of thjebedfea'ch drawer extending all the :way acrossfthebed.
In' this type the drawers may "be "in tandem" or two drawers, as in Fig. 1. In the case of double drawers the fronts of the drawers may be close fitted as in Fig. 1 but if double or tandem drawers are used the drawers may have either close fitted fronts or the type shown in Fig. 5;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the bed showing the tops of the hangers which act as bed slats for a bed spring;
Fig. 7 is a perspective fragmentary end view of the hanger at the ends of the bed which has slideways on one side only. The end hangers are reversible.
Fig. 8 is a perspective fragmentary end view of one of the intermediate hangers. This particular hanger is designed for an upper and lower row of drawers; and
Fig. 9 is a perspective fragmentary cross-section taken on the line 9-9 of Fig. 3.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, [0 indicates the side portions of a bed. In the present drawings the bed side frames are made of metal channel members, however, any type of bed side frames may be used if desired which is provided with a resting place for the bed slats.
In the drawings I have shown several modifications of the single row hangers indicated at H in Fig. 2. These hangers all have the generic feature of a T formation comprising the top fiat flange 12 upon which a bed spring may be placed and a central web portion l 3. The web 13 is provided with lower right-angled flanges M which provide slide-ways for the upper row of drawers. In the case of a lower row of drawers the hanger used is extended by means of the lower web I311. and flanges I 4a. Any number of rows may be used within the capacity of the available space and depth of drawers.
The hangers I3 may have slide-ways on one side only, as shown in Fig. 7.
On that portion of the bed side frames H] where the hanger slats bear, I have positioned pins 20 properly spaced from each other. On
the extension portions of the upper hanger representing the bed slat -I have provided holes 22 which are adapted to snugly fit over the pins 20.
In the tandem type drawer, the extreme ends of the hangers also provide stops against which the back side of the front ends of the drawers engage.
The end hangers are similar to the intermedi- 3 ate hangers excepting for the elimination of flanges on one side of the vertical central web. This is for the purpose of permitting the hanger to lie close against the head board and the foot board of the bed.
The hanger bed slat may be mounted on the bed frame or demounted easily and quickly and when not in use stored in a small space. Numerous types may be used together with numerous sized drawers so that the bed storage drawers may be changed from time to time or made up in difierent combinations.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have designed a very useful and convenient combination drawer hanger and bed slat and although I have shown only a few of the possible combinations yet it is to be understood that I may vary the shape and proportions of the units within wide limits while still remaining within the spirit of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is:
l. A combination bed-slat and drawer hanger for a conventional bed comprising, a flat slat portion having end portions adapted to engage on side frame portions of said bed, a lower vertical web portion fixed to the under side of said slat portion, the end portions of said slat portion extending out beyond the end portions of said web portion, drawer slide-ways longitudinally formed on said web portion, said slat portion and the web and drawer slide-Ways portions adapted to be located at ninety degrees to the major axis of said bed side frame portions.
2. A combination bed-slat and drawer hanger for a conventional bed as set forth in claim 1 in which a plurality of drawer slide-ways are located on said web portion, the slide-ways being located one above another.
