Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEFIoE. A
R. CROWLEY, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
NEEDLE-WRAPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,418, dated December 13, 1859.`
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CROWLEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Needle-Wrappers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichi i Figure l, exhibits a wrapper with my improvement, in an open condition. Fig. 2, eX- hibits the same wrapper containing needles, and opened as far as is necessary to take out the needles. Fig. 3, exhibits a section corresponding with Fig. 2. Fig. 4:, exhibits a section of the wrapper complet-ely folded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.
My invention consists in a very simple improvement in the kind of wrapper in which needles are ordinarily sold, by which the needles are enabled to be taken out one or more at a time as required for use, without unfolding the wrapper to such an extent as to run any risks of dropping them out, and without the necessity of handling any of them but that or those desired to be taken out and so rendering them liable to rust.
To enable others to make and use niyinvention I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
I make the wrapper of a single piece of paper or other material, represented in Fig. 1, which may be of precisely the same form as the piece of which the wrapper `ordinarily used is formed, and which may be folded in precisely the same manner as indicated by the red lines in that figure, that is to say, rst in the two lines a a, and afterward in the two lines b, b; but I cut the central portion A, that is included between the four lines a, a, b, b, in a curved line or in an equivalent manner whereby B, of the whole width of the folded d d aiflaip wrapper is produced and theincision thu made is what constitutes my invention.`
The needles n, n, are put into this wrapper in the usual manner and with the heads toward the iap B; but aft-er they have been put in, and the wrapper has been folded in the lines a, a, it (the wrapper,) `instead of being left loose, as, has been customary with the wrappers heretofore used, may havethe margin pasted down or otherwise secured by some adhesive material along the whole or any portion of its length, to prevent `the wrapper becoming unfolded in the said lines a, a. The folds are made in the usual manner in the lines b, and b, to make the parts C, and D, cover the part A, and the flap B; and the part C, may then be tucked into the part D, 4in the usual manner, thus securing the part C, and making it protect the flap B. Then it is desired to take out a needle or needles from the wrapper, the partC, is untucked from the part D, and the latter is unfolded from the part A, as yshown in Figs. 2, and 3, leaving the iiap B, exposed.
The flap B, is then pulled open as shown" in the last mentioned figures to expose the` heads of the needles, any one of which may then be taken out whilethe others remain so snugly held in the` wrapper that there is no danger of dropping yand losing them, and without handling the others and thereby rendering them liable tobe rusted "bythe perspiration of the fingers.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The incision ofthe wrapperasshown at d, d, so as to expose the heads of the" needles and produce `a -covering or` iap B, of the form shown or equivalent form, as and for the purposesheren set forth"` and described. l
