Arron/VHS iran 'Ms-rare IGEORGE .ionN LOVELL, Yor 'NEW lYorirgfn.'Y.
"reir rAcKnGn V specification ofrenersrafena To all whom #may con/cero:
Be it known v that 1, GnoRGnJ. fLovELL, a subject ofztheKing-of -Great Britain, and resident ofthe .city of -N ew iYork, borough off-Manhattan, county -of VNew York.v and State of New York, have invented -a new and Improved Package, of 'which'the following is a full, clear, ande'Xactdescription.A
My invention relates vto a vpackage, and
-more particularly that type of, ackage primarily designed with a view o .permitting ofthe transportation ofphonograph records andvsimil'arly perforated discs. Y
In connection with shipping-records,it is a well appreciated `fact' that a great f amount of breakag'eoccurs despite the Ifact that the 'same are. packed with great f care. to be attributed tothe extremelyrough usage which packagesreceive inb'oth parcels post This Vis Y ous losses during shipment occur, in connection with records in packages which have been heretofore used, for the reason that it has been possible to readily extract a number of records without thelloss being appar-V ent upon the package being received..
Having this Vdefect also in mind, IhaveI constructed a package, which lfurther shall incorporate means whereby any tampering which the same has become subjected to will become apparent instantly. Reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings which illustrate one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which drawings,
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate'the inner faces of the side members forming the package,
and prior to their assemblage.
Figure 3 shows a package in section, in
process of being assembled.
Figure 4 is a similar View, but showing the parts assembled vand 'housing a record disk.,
Figure 5 is an exterior View of afpackage, and i Figures 6- and tion. e i
In these `views the vreference numeral'. 10,
designates-sheets of any suitablefmaterial', ai-hich material preferably fincl'udes resilient qualities, such as-are tiificorporated-in corru-l gated board. Each of thesesheets are .formed with a centr-ally disposed opening ll, above and below which are slots12 which are provided for apurpose hereinafter-more fully specified. Y
ln forming the complete package, and associating therewith the record or records to be shipped, afferrule is inserted-throughone ofthe centrally disposed openings. i
Patented apnic, "1922.1,
Referring now moreparticularly to,\Fig
ure Y vit willfbe seen-thatgihi's 'fer-rule con-- xf'eniently includes a cylindrical body p0rtion 13, which has its .ends split, as has been indlcatedby the reference numeral 14 whereby the yend portions of the ferrule may be y turned up to provide radially extending lugs Y 15. One end of the body portion '13 is now flattened so as to provide lugs 15,andthe opposite end thereof is inserted'through the openingll of one of the'sheets 10.
Subsequent to this, a strip 16 formed with a gummed portion 17 adjacent its ends is caused to overlie the lugs 15, the vgummed ends of the strip being moistened and thread#Y ed through the slots 12 so that the ferrule Vis virtually anchored in place, in that any-y withdrawal ofthe same from the opening 11 will be immediately apparent, due tothe fact l Y V90 Agrecord 18 may now be associatedv with l that the strip 16 will haveV become broken.
the ferrule 13 the turn table opening of the record beingV utilized for, this purpose, as has been clearly shown in Figure 3.' If but one record is to be shipped, the second sheet f10 may now vbe threaded on to the ferruley subsequent to which the split end of said ferf rule vis spread .so as to provide the'lugs 15 adjacent this end, whereby topreventv any Amovement of the parts relative to one another.
After thisjhas'been accomplished, a second strip 16,.which has been transversely applied tothe sheet 10, as has been` shown in Figure 3, is slipped through the slot 12 so as' t0 cever the last, named end of the ferrule, and
to provide a seal which shall immediately indicate any tampering to `which the package may have been subjected.
It is obvious that any desirablernumber of records might be shipped 'in this manner, by simply providing a Vt'errnle with longer body portions 13, and utilizing additional sheets of material 19, which conveniently embody resilient qualities, these latter sheets being interposed between the' faces of adjacent records.
From the foregoing, itwill be appreciated that l have constructed a package by means of which danger' ot breakage in shipping records is reduced to a minimumr` any suitable number of records being capable of being shipped in a package,
The foregoing is to be attributed to the fact that the edges of the records or other members housed Within my improved type of package are completely protected so that danger oi' the same being struck in handling is eliminated.
lt will further be understood that means has been provided in a package constructed in accordance with my invention` which shall prevent any tampering with the contents of the same, without this Jtampering becoming immediately apparent upon receiptof the package,
Obviously numerous modications of structure might readily be resorted to Without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows;-
l. A package, includingl a pair oi sheets of material, said package being adapted to receive a record interposed between said sheets, said sheets being formed with openings adapted to align With the turn table opening of a record, and means passing through all of said. openings for retaining J@he parts in assembled position, and strips of material yextending through slots formed above and below the openings in said sheets and to over-lie such retaining meanswhercby it will be necessary to sever said strips prior to an opening of the package.
2. A package, including a pair of sheets of material, said package being adapted to receive a record interposed between said sheets, said sheets being Vformed with openings adapted to align with the turn table opening of a record, retaining means passing through said openings for retaining the parts in assembled position, and a sealing means cooperating with said retaining means and having certain of its portions inaccessible from the exterior faces of said sheets.
