Description

UNITED ySTATES PATENT OFFICE; i i
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,405, dated December`13,i1859. p y
T o all whom fit/may cof/wem: i
Be it known that I, NELSON BARNUM, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash Supporters and Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description ofthe same, reference being had to the anneXed drawing, making part of this speci fication, in which# Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is also a longitudinal section upon an enlarged scale.
The nature and object of my invention will be understood from the following description.
Similar letters of reference represent corresponding parts of the different ligures of the drawing annexed.
Upon the drawing, A represents the side stile of the frame or sash, 4and through the edge of this stile a groove is cut in the longitudinal direction, as shown at D, and into this groove a strip B is introduced, which is prevented from slipping endwise by means of the screws K K, and behind this strip springs C C are introduced for the purpose of pressing the strip hard against the side of the window frame. The object of this strip B with the springs C C behind it is to hold the sash in any given position by the friction induced by the springs.
Now to lock the sash when it is down and to facilitate the raising and lowering ,thereof I introduce the bolt I in the strip B and operate it by means of the lever I-I, which is attached to it by means of the rod G and the spring J, the bolt being thrown back by means of the lever and forward by the spring J, the one end of which is secured in the strip in the manner shown. Besides the,
locking and unlocking of the sash,`the lever l I-I and rod G perform the additional func-"1 tion of compressing the springs C C by i drawing back the strip B, which thus dil minishes the frictionand allows the sash to move up and down with facility, and to keep the rod G and lever H always in the position shown when the sash is at rest. The spring E is placed around the inside end of the rod as shown, so as to have its bearing against the bottom of the groove D, and the inside head of the` rod; The operation ofV this contrivance is as followsz` When it is y y desired to raise or lower the sash, the lever "l H (which is hinged to the sash at 1") is y depressed, which `draws the spring J back to the bottom of the groove in which it opern; ates, and then by a stillfurther compression j of the lever the strip B is drawn back inthe groove D, which releases the sash and allows it to move with ease; andthatthe sash may be made to expand toan indefinite citent a screw nut F is placed upon the outend of i the rod, by which means the expansion of the sash is regulated. i 1 z y Now I am awarethat thestrp B with the springs behind it is not new, and Ifam also aware that the said strip has been drawn in by means of a lever and connection between the strip` and lever. rl`hese, therefore, I do not claim as such, but
That I claim isf- The lever I-I, the adjustable connection G, and the springs J and E and bolt I or their equivalents, in combination with the yielding strip B, for the purpose specified.
` NELSON BARNUM.
