Description

B. MILLER 2,636,632 SMOKING STAND AND ARTICLE SUPPORT Filed Jan. 16, 1946 AM I m [N V EN TOR.
flezylmia M lar BY am AT 702N157 Patented Apr. 28, 1953 SMOKING STAND AND ARTICLE SUPPORT Benjamin Miller, Philadelphia, Pa., assignor to Argo Lamp Company, Philadelphia, Pa., a partnership Application January 16,1946, Serial No. 641,491
This invention relates to a combined smoking stand and article support, and more particularly to a smoking stand which not only provides the customary smokers facilities, but also provides means for supporting other articles of which a smoker or other user may wish to avail himself.
It is common practice for people who smoke to engage in other pursuits while smoking, such as reading, sewing, sipping a beverage, etc. Very frequently, it is necessary or convenient for the smoker to place the reading matter, beverage glass, or articles of like nature on some nearby support. Conventional smoking stands afford little or no facilities for the reception of such articles.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved combination smoking stand and article support which will afford a smoker adequate article receiving as well as the customary smokers facilities all in one unit which can be placed within easy reach of the smoker.
More particularly, it is an object of my invention to provide an improved combination smoking stand and article support which incorporates (1) space for tobacco products and ashes, and (2) space for reception of cocktail glasses or the like.
Another object of my present invention is to provide an improved combination smoking stand. and article support as above set forth which is readily portable and can be placed within easy reach of the user.
A further object of my present invention is to provide an improved combination smoking stand and article support as aforesaid which is simple in construction, which is economical in cost, which can be made highly pleasing in appearance, and which is very eiiicient in use.
According to one form of my invention, I provide a pedestal which supports an upstanding standard at the upper end of which there is carried a receptacle for tobacco products, such as cigars, cigarettes, etc. This receptacle may be in the form of a humidcr, if desired, or it may be merely a casing or housing for the reception and temporary storage of the tobacco products. Surrounding the aforesaid receptacle is an annular tray or support on which cocktail glasses, books, sewing materials or similar articles may be placed. The annular tray is formed to receive an ash tray or the like adjacent its inner peripheral portion and at a point above the aforementioned recep tacle. Thus, the ash tray or the like acts as a cover over the receptacle. To facilitate lifting and moving th stand from place to place, the annular tray may be formed with a seat and a l Claim. (01. 220-1) handle pivotally mounted thereon for movement from a rest position within said seat to an upright position over said receptacle and ash tray. In its said rest position, the handle is substantially flush with the adjacent portions of the ane nular tray and is substantially concealed from View, but when it is in its raised or upright position, the handle can be grasped by the hand to facilitate lifting of the stand. In a second form of my invention, a second annular tray may be removably supported on the above mentioned annular tray and provided with suitable handle means to facilitate its removal. This provides a removable tray for empty glasses and like articles.
The novel features that I consider character istic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claim. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and method of operation, as well as additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of several embodiments thereof, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fi 1 is a View partly in section and partly in front elevation of one form of combined smoking stand and article support according to my invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary section showing one way in which the pivoted handle may be mounted on the article supporting tray.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout, there is shown a base lwhich threadedly receives an upstanding tubular core 3. The base I is covered by a shell 5 and the core 3 is surrounded by a plurality of interfitting sleeves 1 all of suitably ornamental form. The base I and shell 5 constitute, in effect, a pedestal, and the core 3 and shells I constitute a standard which rises from the pedestal to a suitable height.
On the upper end of the uppermost sleeve i, there rests a second shell 9 which is secured to the standard in any suitable manner, as by a nut I I threaded onto the upper end of the core 3 and intermediate washers 3. The nut Ii also holds the shell 5, the sleeves l and the shell 9 in suitably assembled relation. The shell 9 may be formed with a seat 15 on which rests a receptacle IT in which tobacco products, such as pipe tobacco, cigars or packages of cigarettes 19, may be stored. Th receptacle I? may have an open top, or it may be in the form of a humidor, in which latter case it is provided with a tightly fitting lid 2|.
Resting on the shell 9 and secured thereto by means of a plurality of circum'ferentially spaced bolts 23 and associated acorn nuts 25 is an annular tray 2'1 which is formed adjacent its inner periphery with an annular recess 25 for a purpose shortly to be set forth. The tray 21 serves to receive and support various articles With which the usermay be tconcerned;sutheasrcocktall glasses 3 l wine goblets 33, orbooks-spectacles, sewing materials and the like (not shown). Beyond the recess 29, the annular tray 21 is provided with a portion 35 which extendsiin-wardlyedown around the upper end of the receptacle I! and forms a seat for an ash traysBl. fizThesa'shttray and. a nut-:1 "is threadedizonz each. handler end f t I toi-lock-the handle :39 to thestrayst l. a ls-spring washer dlzpis interposed, betvceeneeaclrmut 5 and :the 5 adjacent wall portion :of zthezfgroovze 3&9 ate :provide sufiicient :frictiontto hold rthe-"handle "$9 .innanypositionzto which; it iszmoved.
