Description
i 7' A r] 26, 192 R. M. DAVIS SMOKERS ASH TRAY AND LIKE RECEPTACLE Filed May 18. 1926 Patented Apr. 26, 1927.
UNITED STATES REGINALD MOSS DAVIS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
SMOKERS ASH TRAY AND LIKE REGEPTAGLE.
Application filed May 18, 1926, Serial No. 109,820, and. in Great Britain May 25, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in smokers ash trays and is particularly adapted for extinguishing burning or smouldering matter in the tray and to present a neat and tidy appearance.
A smokers ash tray according to this invention comprises a receptacle and a cover mounted displaceably relative to the receptacle, the latter having a well portion normally sealed by the cover and having an upwardly sloping rim or flange outside the cover to form therewith a pocket for the reception of ash and the like which discharges into the well when the cover is raised.
In its preferred form the receptacle is dish-like in form with a central well portion to the base of which is secured an upstanding rod or guide. A dome-shaped cover is slidably mounted on the rod and is normally seated around the well portion. \Vhen the cover is lifted up on the rod, smouldering ash matches and so forth deposited in the annular space between the rim of the receptacle and the cover fall by gravity down the sloping side of the receptacle into the well portion and are thus hidden from view and extinguished when the cover is again lowered.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l. is a sectional elevation of the ash tray;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same; and
Figure 5 is a detail in enlarged perspective view.
Referring to these drawings, the recepta e, which is made of metal, porcelain or other convenient material, is shaped with well portion 1 and sloping upper portion er rim 2. At the centre of the base of the receptacle is welded or otherwise secured an upstanding rod or guide 3. A dome-shaped cover 4 is fitted to a tube 5 by means of a plug 6 which is secured in. the top of the tube and in an opening in the top part 7 of the cover. Knob 8 carrying a screw 9 cu ga es in a threaded bore of the plug 6.
he tube 5 is freely mounted on the rod 3 and a pin 10 on the rod engages in a slot 11 in the tube. The cover can accordingly be lifted relative to the tray to a position as shown in chain lines in Figure l. The slot 11 is branched at its lower end as shown in Figure 3 so that by a partial rotation of the cover, when just below its uppermost position the cover is readily detached for cleaning purposes. One or more c gar or cigarette rests 12 are secured to the cover, and if desired rests for this purpose may be formed in or otherwise provided on the rim of the receptacle.
in operation, smouldering ash matches and so forth are deposited in the annular space 13 between the cover and the rim of the receptacle. The cover is then raised by lifting the knob 8 and the ash falls down the sloping rim into the well of the receptacle. The cover is then lowered on to its normal seating around the well and the ash is thereby hidden from View and er;- tinguished. By this means the ash tray presents a tidier appearance and objectionable odours from smouldering matter are miniraised.
The ash tray is conveniently carried from place to place by means of the knob on top of the cover and the several parts can be readily dismantled for cleaning mrposes.
It will be understood that the improved ash tray may be constructed in a variety of forms and of various materials other than or in combination with metal. if desired, the knob on the top of the cover may be replaced by a fitment serving to provide a matchbox holder, candle stick or other convenience. In a modified. form oi: cover which seals the well, instead of being hollow and having a seating on the receptacle it has a solid base which low :s down upon and compresses smouldering ash and other matter in the well.
I claim:
A smokers ash tray comprising in combination a receptacle having a well portion and a wall sloping upwardly from the well portion, an upstanding post secured to the base of the receptacle, a cover for said well portion a sleeve carried by said cover and iounted on said post, and a pin and slot connexion between said post and said sleeve.
REGINALD MOSS DAVIS.
