Description

April 28, 1931. A. BURGER SHOKERS ARTICLE Filed Feb. 20, 1928 Patented Apr. 28, 1931 UNITED STATES ABRAHAM BURGER, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
smoxnrvs ARTICLE Application filed February 20, 1928. Serial No. 255,613.
This invention relates generally to smokers articles, but more particularly to a safety ash, cigar and cigarette stub depository.
One of its objects is the provision of a simple, neat and inexpensive article of this character which is designed to quickly extinguish ignited stubs placed therein and to eliminate the obnoxious odors of such stubs and ashes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle in which the stubs and ashes cannot be accidentally spilled therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a smokers article embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectionthereof. Figure 3 is a horizontal section on line 3-3, Figure 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved smokers article has been designed for use on a desk, table or the like and comprises a base constituting a receptacle or depository 10, preferably formed of sheet metal into the shape of a bowl and having its upper end threaded to receive a cap or cover 11. A lead weight 12 may be placed in the bottom of the receptacle to stabilize the device and to bring it to an upright position should it be overturned.
The cap 11 is substantially conical in shape and terminates at its upper end in a neck or collar 13 to which is fastened the lower end of a relatively short conduit or pipe 14 opening into the receptacle 10. Applied to the upper end of the conduit is an ash or refuse receiver 15 of inverted conical form terminating at its lower end in a neck or collar 16 for fitting it to said conduit. The joints between the latter and the cap and the receiver may be soldered orotherwise permanently sealed. This receiver is formed of sheet metal and its sloping walls insure the discharge of the refuse into the conduit and thence into the receptacle. Attached to the external rim or flange 17 of the receiver are cigar, cigarette or pipe supports 18.
For the purpose of trapping the smoke and gases in the receptacle and smothering or extinguishing ignited stubs deposited therein, the upper and lower ends of the conduit 14 adjacent their point of connection with the cap 11 and receiver 15 are restricted to prevent the circulation or admission of outside air currents into the latter. To this end, referring particularly to Figure 2, the ends of the conduit have restricted openings 19, 20, the upper opening 19 being preferably formed by a downwardly converging rim or flange 21 depending from the neck 16 of the receiver into the upper end of the conduit and the lower opening 20 being formed by an upwardly and downwardly turned rim or flange 22 rising from the neck 13 of the cap 11 and extending into the lower end of the conduit. The restricted openings, while disposed within the conduit, are of a diameter to permit the deposit of ashes, cigarette stubs and the like therethrough. The rims 21 and 22 serve to 5 deflect the smoke downwardly, trapping it in the receptacle and preventing it issuing from the top of the receiver. After a few ignited stubs are deposited in the receptacle, the oxygen is exhausted and subsequent stubs or lighted matches are almost instantly extinguished.
When it is desired to empty the receptacle, the same is simply detached from the cap 11 by unscrewing it therefrom.
I claim as my invention 1. A smokers article, comprising a base shaped to form a receptacle having an opening in its top, a conduit rising from said base, a receiver applied to the upper end of said conduit and opening into the same, and a smoke-deflecting rim formed on one of said parts and extending into the conduit for producing a restricted opening therein. 2. A smokers article, comprising a base shaped to form a receptacle open at its top, a cover applied to said receptacle and terminating at its upper end in an attaching collar, a receiver surmounting said cover and having an attaching collar at its lower end, we
and a conduit connecting the receiver with the receptacle and joined at its ends to said attaching collars, one of said collars terminating in an inwardly-directed smoke cle- 5 fleeting rim extending into the corresponding end of the conduit.
3. A smokers article, comprising a bowlshaped member, a detachablecover therefor having a central opening and a collar surm rounding the same, a conduit fitted at its lower end about-said collar,.the Jl'atteriterminating in an inwardly and downwardly facing deflecting rim extending into-the conduit, and a conical receiver secured to the I upper extremity of said conduit, the receiver terminating at :its lower end in adownward- 'ly facing deflecting rini extending vinto the conduit.
