E. HEMMING 2,177,107 SMOKERS BOWL Filed Oct. 15, 1957 I INVENTOR. EMILHEMMINO BY ATTORNEY.
Patented Oct. 24, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to receptacles for refuse,- and more particularly to types to temporarily support cigars, cigarettes and the like, as well as to receive and retain the debris therefrom.
An object of the invention is to provide a device that will efi'lciently retain a lighted or unlighted, partially consumed cigar or cigarette in such manner that the ashes drop on the inverted conical cover of a bowl, which, upon being slightly raised, automatically delivers the ashes, un-
' consumed stumps, burnt matches, and other litter into the chamber within the bowl, effectually preventing further burning and the issuance of fumes, smoke and smell upon replacement of the cover.
A further feature is in the provision of a smokers bowl of pleasingly ornamental appearance, resistant to upsetting, readily portable, incombustible, durable, strong and composed of simple parts well designed for economic and inexpensive construction.
Another aim is to produce a normally covered bowl preferably made of Bakelite or like plastic composition, in any desired colors, that has smooth highly finished walls, easily emptied of its accumulations and readily cleaned, both inside and out.
These and other analogous objects are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential component of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention indicating its purpose.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an expanded, partial side elevational, partial sectional View of the debris distributor and its support.
Referring to the drawing in greater detail, the device will be seen to consist of a container or bowl 955, its upright wall terminating in a smooth, level edge It, while its bottom blends into an inreaching hollow annulus ll, of reversed arcuate cross section, from which extends upwardly a cylinder 18 terminating in a conical saddle 19 at the center of the bowl, and in which is a narrow groove 20 extending from side to side but not entirely through the saddle wall.
The saddle I9 is used as a seat for a thin walled distributor cone 22, terminating in a point 23 and has a cylindrical base 24 tight fitted to the saddle, and at tWo opposite points, narrow slots 25 midway the height of the cone, in registration with the groove 20, the cone having a depending annular flange 24.
Tightly fitted to these slots and groove 20 are projections or lugs 26 extending from the tapered edges 21 of a rack plate 28, these edges 10 being inclined to neatly fit the exterior of the cone.
On the upper edge of the rack plate, which is generally rectangular, are raised prongs 29 of any appropriate ornamental shape spaced to receive between them a cigar, or cigarette in such manner that the ashes may not fall outside the area of the bowl.
A cover 30, shaped as an inverted cone and provided with a central circular opening 3|, is adapted to pass freely over the side edges of the plate 28 and rest upon the cone 22 near its base flange 24, the prongs 29 extending upwardly through the opening slightly above the level of the cover rim 32, in which is an annular recess 33 fitting loosely over the edge [6 of the bowl.
Thus the cover is readily raised, permitting the ashes, stumps and like litter to drop through its opening into the interior of the bowl, to be removed at a convenient time.
It is to be noted that when the frusto-conical cover is in place, substantially no air can enter the bowl, and therefore burning objects are quickly smothered and no smoke or smell can issue.
It will be understood that such modifications may be resorted to as may come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
A smokers bowl comprising a container provided with an inverted frusto-conical cover, a distributor cone having opposed slots, a conical saddle on which said cone is seated, said saddle having a groove in register with the slots in said cone, and an upright rack plate having projections tight fitting said slots and groove to retain said cone in said bowl.
