' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in article carrying containers and the primary object of the present invention is provide a novel and improved chest for carrying articles for counter display.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a counter display chest including an upper and lower half hinged toeach other for opening thereof and embodying novel and improved means for locking said halves in a closed position.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pair of hinged trunk sections having opposed open ends and including novel and improved means for dividing the upper half into a closed compartment,
A further object of the present invention is to provide a counter display chest all parts of which are quickly and readily disassembled facilitating the convenient transporting of the same.
A. still further aim of the present invention is to provide a counter display trunk that is simple and practical in construction, stron and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, neatand attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings formin part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present counter display chest;
Figure 2 is a top plan view showing the present chest in an open position and the hinged partition in a locked position;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 33 of Figure 2, and showing the hinged partition in an unlocked and raised position;
Figure 4 is a similar view of Figure 3, and showing the upper half in a closed and locked position relative to the lower half; I
Figure 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 55 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view of the lower half and showin the manner in which the latch bar is applied to the lower half. V
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration,there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral It represents the lower half of the present compartment or counter display chest generally, comprising a substantially rectangular bottom I2, a pair of spaced parallel end walls M, a forward wall Hi and a rear wall l8.
Fixedly secured to the outer face of the rear wall [8 is a plurality of longitudinally spaced lower anchor plates 26 each of which is provided with spaced pairs of bearing sleeves 22 and 24 which project upwardly from the upper longitudinal edge of the rear wall It. Frictionally positioned between the sleeve; 22 and 24 of each of the plates as, are further sleeves 2 6 formed at one of the ends of a plurality of lower anchor plates 28 that are secured to the outer face of the rear wall 30 of the upper half of the present invention which is designated generally by the numera132. These sleeves 22, 24 and 26 are removably connected by removable pivot pins 34 which facilitate the pivoted or hinged movement of the upper half 32 relative to the lower half l0, and which may be retracted from the sleeves 22, 24 and 26 permitting the upper and lower halves to be disengaged or disassembled in a convenient manner.
Rigidly secured to the outer face of the forward wall i6, is a longitudinal base plate 36 that opposes a longitudinal guide groove or notch 38 provided in the upper edge of the forward wall I6. integrally formed with the upper arcuate edge 48 of the plate 36, that is coplanar with the upper edge of the forward wall iii, are spaced pairs of guide and locking sleeves 42 and M hav ing notches M5 and ill therebetween that frictionally engage the outwardly projecting web portions 50 and 52 of a pair of substantially U-shaped locking plates 54 and 56 that-are fixedly secured to the forward wall 58 of the u per half 32.
Slidably mounted in the guide notch 38, is a locking latch designated generally by the numeral 60 and which includes a pair of spaced parallel arms 62 and 64 which terminate in a rear offset locking bar 66 that slidably engages the pair of sleeves 42, and a forward oiiset lockmg bar 68 that slidably engages the pair of sleeves 44. Fixed to the inner face of the forward wall I6 is a substantially rectangular strip 10 having ing latch 60 through an; opening 15 in one of the end walls |4.- "A finger engaging lug 18 is rigidly secured to the joined ends 80 of the arms 62 and 64 facilitating the sliding movement of the locking latch 60. Slidably mounted in a vertical sleeve 82 at one end of the plate 36 adjacent an opening 84 in the plate 36 is a retaining bar at having an angulated end portion 88 which nor- N2 of further U-shaped strap llfl and, llfithat,
project outwardly from the longitudinal edges of the forward wall 58 and rear wall 30 of the upper half 32.

Rigi-dly secured tothe outer tace of the upper wall E26 for the upper half; 32,, is a pair of longitudinal strips I22 and I24 having their inner ends !26 and 1 2-8 folded inwardly upon themselves and fixed thereto, to provide opposed loops 1.3.2}: and [32 that loosely engage U-shaped attaching element W4 and I36 at the ends of a substantially rectangular hand grip and supporting plate 33.
It should be noted, that the upper half 32 is of a reduced depth that the lower half It, however, when the upper half is; pivoted to an open position as shown in Figure 3, with the bottom wall [2- bearing upon a supporting surface, the supconjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be. understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same. is susceptible to, certain changes fully compree hen ded by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

A container including a hollow substantially rectangular body including upper and lower halves each including a forward wall, a rear wall and a pair of end walls joined by said forward and rear walls, said rear wall of said upper half being hinged to the rear wall of said lower half to permit the upper half to be swung over the lower half, the forward walls of said halves being flush when the halves are disposed one above the other, sleeves carried by the forward wall of the upper half and being aligned with each other, additional sleeves carried by the forward wall of the lower half and aligned with each other and also aligned with the sleeves on the upper half when the halves are disposed one above the other, said forward wall of said lower half having a recess in its inner face communieating with said sleeves on said lower half,.0ne end wall of said lower half having an opening in registry with said recess, an elongated locking member slidably received in said recessand having a finger portion aligned with said sleeves of said lower half, said locking member also including an end portion manually movable outwardly through said opening, the end portion of said locking member being moved into the lower half to position said finger portion in the sleeves of said lower and upper halves when the halves are disposed one above the other, and a retaining rod slidably carried by said one end wall of ,5 said lower half and movable into and out of said opening and across the said end portion of said locking member to block movement of said locking member from said lower half after the finger portion is engaged in the sleeves of said upper 10 and lower halves.
