DOUBLE COAT Howard 0. Ross, Arlington, Va. Application July 28, 1950, Serial No. 176,474 (or. 2-93) 2 Claims.
This invention relates enerally referred to; as top coats or rain coats, and in particular this invention relates to an extensible coat-wherein, in an emergency, the coatm ay be extended to-include two persons.
,,The purpose of this invention is to provide a protecting garment particularly adapted for sport use wherein-a garmentworn by oneperson may be unfolded orextended to include a second person in an athletic stadium or the like and which is also adapted for general use.
Various attempts have been made to provide protecting garments for use in an emergency such as in an athletic stadium or on a golf course but it has been found diificult to provide a combination garment for this use that could also be used for walking and that is also adapted for universal use. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a garment in the form of a top or rain coat having folding vertically disposed sections with fastening means at the edges of the sections whereby with the garment folded it provides'a coat for a single person and, when extended, a coat for two persons with sleeves for the" arms at the sides and with the other two arms positioned inthe intermediate part of the garment.
The object of this invention is, therefore,'to' provide means for forming an extensible garment whereby the garment is adapted for use by one or two persons- Another object of the invention is to provide an extensible garment which in the collapsed or folded position has theappearance of a conventional coat.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved extensible garment for use by one or two persons which is of a comparatively simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a coat split vertically substantially on the center of the front and back with folding sections incorporated in the meeting edges thereof and with fastening elements for securing the folded sections in both the folded and extended positions.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the garment in the extended position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the garment folded as used for a coat for a single person.
Figure 3 is a view similar to that shown in Figure 1 showing the back of the garment with the parts extended. 3
to garments of the type of the front of the garment. Figure 8 is a detail illustrating the connection the parts folded.
Figure 5 is a sectional plan through the garment taken on line- 5-5 of Figure 1 showing the Darts extended. 1 Figure 6 is a similar section taken on line'B-J of Figure 2 showing the parts folded.
Figure '7 is a detail taken on line 1--l of Figure 1 showing a section through the seam at one side at the center of the front of the garment being taken on line 88 of Figure 1. i
Referring now to the drawings wherein-like reference characters denote corresponding parts a the extensible garment of this invention'includes side panels I0 and l I with sleeves l 2-and l3 therein, respectively, folding panels l4 and 15 at the front and a center panel IS with intermediatenected to the edge of the panel 15 by a seam 22;
From the seam 20 the sheet of material extends around the side to the, point 23 where it is provided with snap fasteners 24. Panels 11 and I8:
are of the same width and in Figure 5 the gar-.
ment is shown in an extended position, while in Figure fithe garment is shown in folded position.-
The material is folded at the point 25 at the back and snap fasteners 26 are also provided on this fold. The intermediate panel I1 is formed between the fold 25 and the point 23 and a fold 21 is provided at a point midway of the width of the intermediate panel I! where a section 28 of a separable fastener is positioned. The material between the points 29 and 3H] at the opposite side forms the panel 18 and the panel I8 is folded at the point 3| midway of its width Where a complementary section 32 of a separable fastener, that coacts with the fastener 28, is provided. Snap fasteners 33 and 34 are also provided at the points 29 and 310 to hold the sections folded.
Snap fasteners 35 and 36 are provided on the meeting edges of the panels 14 and I5 and similar fasteners are provided at the points 31 and 38 which receive, or coact with the fasteners 35 and 36 to retain the panels I and [5 in the folded positions as shown in Figure 6.
The upper edge of the panel 16 in the center of the back of the garment is also provided with a snap fastener 39, as shown in Figures 3 and 8 whereby the snap fastener 35 on the upper end of the panel I4 is connected to the upper edge of the center panel at the back to close the intermediate section of the upper end of the garment, as shown in Figure 1.
With the parts arranged in this manner the garment is folded with the center panel It at the back positioned on the inside, with the edges thereof folded at the. points 25 and 2 9 and connected by the snap fasteners 26 and 33 to the fasteners 24 and 34, as shown in Figure 6 and with the parts in this position the stringers of the separable fasteners, 28 and 32 are connected by a slider 40.
The snap fasteners 35 of the panels Ht are snapped into snap fasteners 3'! on the innersurface of the panel l and the snap fasteners 36 of the panel are snapped into corresponding fasteners 38 on the inner surface of the side H. The meeting edges is and 2t are then connected by the snap fasteners 43 and ill whereby the garment provides a coat for one person, as illustrated in Figures 2- and 4.
'When it is desired to use the garment for two persons the snap fasteners are released with the. exception of the iastenersv 35 and 36 at the front which are snapped together to hold the meet; g edges of the panels t4 and I5.
By this means a combination garment is provided that may be used for one or two persons and as illustrated in Figure 1, when used for two persons the right arm of one person is positioned in the sleeve 12 and the left arm of the other person is. positioned in the sleeve l3.
The sections Hi and it may also be provided with pockets ill and 42', respectively.
. It will he understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the. invention.
. What is: claimed is:
I. An extensible garment comprising a sheet.
having coacting fastening elements on the extended edges thereof, the back of said body being folded on vertical lines spaced from the center providing a center panel and having folds spaced from and parallel to the folds at the edges of said center panel providing intermediate panels in the back, fastening elements positioned on the back at the outer edges of the said intermediate panels and on. the meeting edges of the said intermediate and center panels, and fastening elements positioned on each of the intermediate panels at points midway of the width thereof for securing the intermediate panels in folded condition with the center panel folded on the inside of the garment.
2.. An extensible garment comprising a sheet of material providing a body open on the center of the front and having sleeves at the sides, panels having snap fasteners on the outer edges thereof extended from the meeting edges of the body at the front and positioned. on the inside thereof, snap fasteners onthe meeting edges of the body at the frontand also. on the inner surface thereof with the snap fasteners on the inner surface positioned to coact with the snap fasteners of the panels for retaining the said panels against the inner suriace of the body, the back of said body being folded on vertical lines spaced from the center providing a; center panel andhaving folds spaced from and parallel to the folds at the edges of the said center panelproviding intermediate panels in the back, a plurality of spaced snap fasteners provided on the outer edges of the said intermediate panels andon the meeting edges of the intermediate and center panels, and separable fasteners positioned on each of the intermediate panels at points midway of, the width thereof for securing the intermediate panels in folded condition with the center panel folded on the inside of the garment.
