UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD DOBBAS, OF GREENWOOD, CALIFORNIA.
MINERS LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,493, dated August 29, 1882. Application filed April 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD DOBBAS, of Greenwood, in the county of El Dorado and State of California, have made and invented a certain new and useful lmprovementin Miners Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved lamp for laborers and miners use under ground,
and in similar localities where it is subjected to rough usage.
It has for its object to produce a strong, durable, and cheaply-constructed lamp, capable of being suspended or set up in any desired position for service, and, when not in use, beingadapted to be readily carried about by the workman from place to place upon his person.
The following'description clearly sets forth the nature of my invention and the manner of carrying out, applying, and using the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section taken longitudinally through the body of the lamp across the center. Flg. 2-shows the lamps suspended in position for service. Fig. 3 1s a top view of the front half of the body, where the inlet and the wick tube are located.
The lamp-body A has in cross section the form of a double-convex disk, hollow within,
and having an opening in the uppermost side to permit the introduction of oil and the insertion of a wick into the chamber. It has somewhat the shape of a canteen with the neck taken off, and when in service it is held in a horizontal position.
At opposite sides-and projecting above the top face, are two lugs or ears, n I), to receive and form points of connection for the ends of a bail or handle, 0. These ears are placed diametrically opposite to each other, and have the ends of the bail connectedgto them by a hinge-joint, a, so that the lamp-body is maintainedin a. horizontal positiongwhatever may be the conditions under which it is employed. This construction also permits the body A to be turned flatwise intogthe space between the side bars of the bail when being carried about from place to place and not in use, or when packed for shipment.
The aperture E in the top of the body is closed by a cap or plate, G, in which are fixed a wick-tube, g, and an air-vent,g. By means of a thumb-screw, I, that passes down through the plate and takes into a bridge piece or bar, 70, this covering-piece is held down in place within the rimj of the opening E. The object of this construction is twofold. It affords a large opening in the lamp-body, of suitable size for readily removing a core from the interior space, so that the body A can be easily cast in one piece, and it enables the wick and vent tubes to be readily replaced when worn out or broken, and to be removed for cleaning purposes.
The body A can be produced either by casting it in one piece or by brazing together two saucer-shaped disks, rim to rim. The ears I) b can also be formed either by casting them integral with the body or by attaching them in position in slots cut into the sides of the body and securing them all together by brazing the joints.
This lamp is especially adapted for rough usage and handling. It is cheap and durable, and is readily placed or suspended in any required position for service.
The swivel H at the top of the bail forms a place of attachment for a suspension-hook or a chain.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The lamp-body A, having the ears b b, for attachment of a boil or handle, and the aperture E in its top, in combination with a cap or cover, G, having Wick and vent tubes 9 g, and a screw, I, and bar It, having a screwthreaded hole, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the lamp-body A, having the aperture E in its top, with a surrounding rim, j, and the plate Gr, with Venttube and wick-tube g g, and the fastening device consisting of the thumb-screw, and the bridge-piece fixed across the aperture E, substantially as described.
3. The improved miners lamp herein described, eonsisting of the body A, of double convex shape, having ears I) b, the bail or handle (J, attached by hinge-joint to the ears, the aperture E in the top of the body, the bridge-piece, and the plate G, with tubes g g, and fastening-screw, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand and seal.
BERNARD DOBBAS.
In presence of- EDWARD E. OsBoRN, D. SELLEGK.
