TELEPHONE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,336, dated August 29, 1882.
' Application filed May 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may ooncern:
Be it known that I, OscAR D. HARTWELL, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Telephone- Cases, of which the following is a description v sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view, and Figs. 2 and3 side elevations, Fig. 2 being in section.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates more especially to the battery-box of the telephone-case; and itconsists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, by means of which the capacity of the box, when used as a desk for writingpurposes, is greatly increased.
In most telephone-cases as now constructed the top of the battery-box is inclined, as seen at d, Fig. 1, and serves the purpose ot' a desk' on which the person using` the telephone can place the disp'atch to be sent, ifpreviously written out, and also take down the answer as it is received; but as ordinarily constructed it is too small to be of much service in this respect, and is not provided with means for securing` or holding the paper placed upon it. These objections are obviated by my improvemenuwhich will be readily understoodl by all conversant with such matters from the following description.
In the drawings, A represents the batteryboX; d, the inclined top of the same; B, the
i fly-leaf or extension; (J, the bracket, and D the paper-holder.
The leaf B is hinged to the front -part of the top d, so as to be at the same angle when in use, but when not in use is lowered to the position shown by the dotted lines E.
The bracket O is journaled in the supports a b, which are attached to the front side of the box A, and is provided with the coiled spring G, the upper end of which is made fast in the support b and the lower end in the bracket near the step or support a, the spring being so arranged as to constantly exert a torsional strain on the bracket, tending to throw or swing it outward to the position shown in Fig. 2.
A person using' the telephoue, by reason of having one hand constantly einployed in holding the receiver, would find it very inconvenient to raise the leaf B and secure it in position with the other hand if the bracket were constructed in the ordinary manner. I therefore make use of the coiled spring G for throwing' the bracket out into position as the leaf is raised, thus enabling the operation ot' raising` and securing the leaf to be performed readily with but one hand. The paper H, employed oii the table, is. also liable to become deranged, and cannot be easily kept or held in position where but one hand is used, and I therefore make use of the spriug-clamp D for holding the same, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the leaf B is represented as detached from the box A and provided with a supporting-back, I, adapting it for use by attaching,` the same to the wall of the room or any other convenient support.
Having thus explained my improvemcnt, what I claini is A desk attachment for telephones, consisting of a battery-box provided with an inclined top having a hinged extension and at its front with a bracket-support consisting of projecting ears and an interposed Vertical rod,
a bracket hinged to said rod and provided with an inclined arm for supporting the hinged extension, and a spring on said rod connected 'at its ends to the support and bracket, whereby the latter is thrown out when the hinged extension is raised, substantially asdescribed.
