UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER WEBER, 0F ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
THOMAS A. EDISON, INCORPORATED, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORA- TION OF NEW JERSEY.
V PHONOGRAPI-I-HORN CRANE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 11, 1907.
Patented July 18, 1911.
Serial No. 392,313.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 46 Ridge street, Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonograph-Horn Oranes, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to improvements in phonograph horn cranes and particularly to improvements in devices for supporting such cranes upon, and with respect to, the phonograph or other talking machine.
My object is to provide simple and eifective supporting devices for phonograph horn cranes by which the crane will be sustained very rigidly in position and which when out of use will in no way disfigure or detract from the appearance of the cabinet.
In order that the invention may be better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1, is a side elevation partly in sec tion, illustrating a Home phonograph, equipped with my present improvements, Fig. 2, a detached perspective view of the supporting devices for the crane, illustrating a part of the phonograph cabinet in dotted lines, and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the lower supporting member.
In these views, corresponding parts are represented by the same letters of reference.
The cabinet of the phonograph is provided with a vertical front panel 1, and with a hinged top 2, as heretofore.
3 is a sheet metal bracket having a central opening 4, and formed with downturned lugs 5 and 6, which are adapted to straddle the upper edge of the front panel 1, so that the bracket will be held firmly in place, by the weight of the top and the parts carried thereby. On the bottom of the cabinet I secure by means of screws a fiat socket 7, which may be formed if desired with a spring tongue 8, whereby when the lower supporting member 9 is forced into the socket it will be firmly held by the friction of said tongue. The supporting member 9 is formed with a ferrule 10, which receives the lower end of the crane 11. The supporting member 9 is preferably extended some distance in front of the cabinet and may be formed with an elastic pad 12, so as to avoid scratching or marring the table on which the instrument may rest. The crane 11 as will be noted, passes through and will be supported by the upper bracket 3 and may be of any appropriate construction. I illustrate the crane as being provided with a telescoping member 18, from the outer end of which the horn 14: is carried in the usual way.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a phonograph cabinet, of an upper bracket having downturned lugs which straddle the upper edge of the front panel of said cabinet, said bracket being held in such position by the hinged top of the cabinet, a lower supporting member, a horizontal socket situated entirely beneath the cabinet for removably securing the said supporting member thereto, the said supporting member having a horizontal arm adapted to be inserted within said socket, and a horn crane guided by said bracket and whose lower end is received by the lower supporting member, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a phonograph cabinet, of a shallow socket permanently carried on the bottom of the cabinet and formed with a spring tongue, a lower supporting member engaging said socket and held frictionally therein by said tongue, an upper bracket removably carried by the cabinet, and a horn crane sustained by the lower supporting member and by said bracket, substantially as set forth. v
This specification signed and witnessed this 3rd day of Sept. 1907.
PETER WEBER.
