Becker, East Orange, N. J. Application July 15, 1948, Serial No. 38,790
This invention relates to tools of the screw driver type having as part thereof an attachment for hOlding a screw. In another of its aspects the invention is directed to a novel attachment for screw drivers, which attachment is efficient in operation,v cheap to. manufacture, may be readily combined with' conventional type screw drivers and releasably maintains a screw in po-.- sition.
The various advantages and objects of this invention will be readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the appended drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a blank of a springy sheet metal band or strip after the stamping operation and before bending.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stamped or cut out band shown in Fig. 1 but after the bending operation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an assembly of a conventional screw driver with the attachment shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the attachment shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but with the attachment shown in Fig. 4 combined with a conventional screw driver, instead of that shown in Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the novel attachment may comprise a fiat spring sheet metal band or strip l having an elongated recess H at one end thereof and a pair of spaced openings l2 and IS. The recess may consist of an outwardly diverging receiving mouth |4 communicating with a receiving slot H in turn communicating with a generally arcuate opening |6 whose diameter is greater than the width of the slot [5. A narrow slot or slit extends from the arcuate opening IB and terminates in an arcuate opening l8 whose diameter is greater than that of slot H.
The slotted or recessed end of the band I0 is bent widthwise upwardly on a line between the arcuate openings I6 and I8 and is at approximately right angles to that portion of band Ill adjacent thereto to provide a screw or bolt receiving and holding element 20. The recess H in the end of the band l0 provides an elongated bifurcation with the arms 2| and 22 thereof being resilient and capable of being movable outwardly widthwise with respect to each other.
The openings l2 and I3 are preferably elongated and may be of any desirable width depending upon the dimension of the screw driver employed. The width of each opening l2 and I3 is preferably greater than the diameter of a 2 Claims. (Cl. 14552) shank of a screw driver to be coupled with band l0 and its length is greater than the maximum widthwise dimension of the operating end of a screw driver. The band I0 may be bent widthwise at l9 between the openings l8 and I2 desired.
As shown in Fig. 3 in which a conventional screw driver is illustrated, the driver consists of a handle 23 and an elongated shank 24 secured thereto and extending from one end thereof. The shank 24 has a screw engaging head 25 terminating at its free end in a knife edge. The free end head 25 may be of any desirable 0on tour for the purpose of gripping or engaging screws of any of the well-known types and need not be a knife edge, shown merely for the purpose of illustrating the invention herein.
The attachment shown in Fig. 2 may be readily and easily combined with the screw driver in the following manner; the knife edge is inserted first through the opening l3 and pushed forward until it is located adjacent the opening l2, whereupon pressure is applied to the forward end of the band Ill to locate part of the opening l3 below the lower end of the knife edge 25. Then the driver is pushed forwardly through opening |2 until the operating end thereof is located adjacent to the bent up portion 20. In this combination the rear portion of the band I0 makes frictional contact with the shank of the driver to maintain the attachment in position on said shank. In operation the threaded or shank end of a screw 5|) may be inserted through the mouth I4 into receiving slot l5, whereupon arms 2| and 22 spring away from each other during insertion; and into the arcuate opening I6, whereupon arms 2| and 22 spring towards each other to releasably maintain in position the screw 50. After the screw is located in position and maintained in said position by virtue of the resilient fingers 2| and 22, the driver may be pushed forwardly and its knife end 25 is inserted into the slot normally present on the head of the screw 50. When the attachment is not needed the attachment may be pushed rearwardly towards the handle whereby the shank of the driver is located in the arcuate opening l6 and is maintained in inoperative position by frictional engagement as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Another embodiment of my invention is shown in Fig. 4 and consists of a single piece of wire which may be twisted to provide a pair of spaced openings 30 and 3| at one end and a pair of spaced wire elements 32 and 33 at the other end and at right angles to the adjacent part thereof.
- 3 The free ends 32 and 33 may be in arcuate form terminating in outwardly flared extremities 34 providing a receiving mouth 35 and a narrow receiving slot 36.
While the invention has been described in detail, it is not to be limited thereby, because it is subject to various changes and modifications.
I claim:
1. An attachment-for a screw driver including a shank and a screw head engaging end, being an elongated sheet metal member, one portion having a pair of openings through the thickness thereof through'which said screw headengaging,
end may pass and said shank may extend to become in frictional engagement with parts of the edges of said member definingsaid openings for maintaining said member in operative position on said shank, the other portion of said member having a pair of openings through the.
thickness thereof, a slot extending through the free end, of said other portiontoone of said second mentioned pair of openings and a slot extending .ibetweensaid-secondw mentioned pair of openings, both of said slots being through the thicknessof said member, the free end of said other portion being at approximately right angles tothercmainder of said portion and being in the'for-mof spacedfingers movable. relative to each, other fcr screw insertion.
2. An attachmentfor a screw driver including a shank and, a. screw head engaging end, being an elongated. resilient. member of sheet material,
