Description

Feb. 10, 1953 LEANDER 7 2,627,683
' TOP DISPLAY Filed Oct. 12, 1950 INVENTOR: RUSSELL J. LEANDER ATT'Y Patented Feb. 10, 1953 TQPCD ISPLAY Russell J. Leander, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Chicago Show Printing Company,
corporation of Illinois Chicago, 111., a
' Application Qatar 12, 1950, Serial No. 189,831
The invention is described more particularly as.
applied to the top of an oil pumpcasing, but may have a more general application to other casings which are generally rounded on top or at the upper edges thereof. V 7
The tops of pump casings fordispensing oil and gasoline at filling stations are sometimes provided with illuminating or display apparatus of a distinguishing nature, but many ofthe pumps have a top casing which is simply rounded at the upper side thereof or at the opposite edges of the casing, audit is difficult to apply an advertising or distinguishing display thereto which is either of a permanentor temporary nature. It is difiicult to apply, an uprightdisplayto a casing of this kind or to make an inexpensive display which may be composed of sheet material and applied to the casing.
An importantobject of the present invention is to provide a display made of sheet material which is cut, scored and foldable to conform to a curved support.
A further object of the invention is to provide a top display comprising foldable sheet material adapted to conform to a curved support and to provide a means for conveniently attaching the display to the support. a a 1 v v A. still .further object of the invention is to provide a display comprising sheet" material cut, scored and foldable to engage curved portions at opposite sides of a casing, and to provide upstanding portions which may be secured to ether at their upper ends and attached firmly to the top of the casing at the base of the display.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a novel inexpensive display for pump casings and the like, formed and foldable from a single piece of sheet material and provided with means for easily attaching and removing the display from the casing.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the specification and will be apparent from the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a sheet which is cut and scored to form a display attachable and engaging a support with a rounded top, in accordance with this invention.
2 is a perspective view illustrating the display of Fig. 1 in set-up form and attached to the rounded top of a pump casing; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an end connector for attaching the display to a casing.
S'Claimsl' (CL 40-4241) This invention is described asapplied to a top sitely rounded edges 8; Sometimes thetop'itself is formed with a projecting .fiange at the ends and sometimes the sides of the casing areformed with a series of open louvers Ill to'ventilatethe casing.
To form the display, asingle sheet l2 of cardboard or other suitable material may be formed with parallel sides and ends with curved corners 14 having grommets l6 adjacent the corners for fastening the ends together. Intermediate the ends, the display materialis formed with scores l8 spaced apart and having curved ends 20 form ing a generally oval. figure. Overlapping the edges of the display material at the ends of the oval figure are protectors 22 which extend at both sides of the material and are secured thereto bygrommets 24 or-other suitable fastening means extending through both sides of the protectors.
In forming the base, the opposite ends are brought together about the scored oval asa base, the rounded ends conforming to; the curvature of the casing to which they areapplied. If the casing has a fiat portion on top with opposite curved ends, the 'curvedportion of the scoring will be at the end portions. If the fiat portion'is shorter, the parallel portions of the scoring will be correspondingly shorter. -The two ends are brought together and aresecured by bendable fasteners 26 inserted through the registering grommets Hi. This causes the rounded score portions 20 to bend downwardly conforming to the end curvature 8 of the casing. Thus the scored base fits closely upon the casing and the sides extend upwardly therefrom. The upper sides contain advertising and display material of any desired nature.
In order to firmly attach the display to a casing, a spiral spring 30 is inserted through the folded display and each end of the spring is engaged by a wire fastening clip 32 bent to form hooks 34 at one end engageable with a loop of the spring and with reversely bent grippers 36 at the other end adapted to be inserted in one of the louvers ID at the end of the casing or to engage at the edge of the casing if a projecting lip is provided therefor. The spring conforms closely to the upper surface of the casing or other support and it presses the base of the display firmly against the casing holding it tightly in place. The protectors 22 at the ends of the display base form guards for the display and then tend to prevent the spring 30 from wearing or defacing the display at these places.
This construction is easily set up by simply folding the display in the proper manner, inserting the spring 30 therethrough and connecting 5 the ends of the fastening clips to the louvers or the ends of'the casing In preparing the-display, the entiresheet may be provided with a moisture repelling coating such as paint or other chemical preparations and the outer exposed surface is usually coated witha waterproof or water-repellant paper upon which a display or an advertising :messaga. or slogan appears. Thus the display is designedaand intended for continuous and permanent use, but may also be quickly and easily v .euipliedrand re moved for changing the advertising messageor slogan or for connecting other similar displays' 'r thereto. 7
While a preferred construction has been-described in someidetaiLlitshould be regarded as-- an illustration orv example rather than as a limitationor restriction-of the invention, since vari-- ouschanges in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts maybe madewithout departing from the'spirit and seope'ofthe invention;
I claim:
1. A display comprising a sheet having amintermediateportionkscored to form an-ova1 base, and the ends foldable!together'overthe base turning the scored ends of the base downwardly to conform to a curved.js'upporting' surface.
2. A top display comprising -a sheetof material with anintermediate 'portioniscored with parallelscores rounded at the ends"to"provide a substantially oval figure between the opposite edges of the sheet and the" ends of the sheet'be ing foldable upwardly over' the'scored DQI iOn as i a base, means forattaching the'ends of the sheet together and thus turning both of the ends of the oval scored base downwardly to conform to opposite curved surfaces at "relatively opposite sides of the top of a supporting structure;
3. A display of the class described; comprising a sheet of fiexible' materialhaving an interme l diateportion. provided with "opposite I parallel scores having rounded ends terminating atop= posite sides of the sheet, protecting ineans ex-- tending over the edges of the scored portion-- and" secured to the'sheet, means for securing theends of thesheettogether when they assumed upwardly about the scored portion; thus forming a supportingibase of the scored portion the ends of which are turned downwardlyby the rounded score portions; and flexiblg means extending through the display in contact with the intermediate portion between the scores for securing the base to a support conforming to the curvature of the base.
4. A top display for a rounded top support, comprising a single sheet scored at the center and having-means at the ends 'forfattaching the ends together'over the scored-portion, the scored portion being substantially oval and located between the opposite sides of the sheet so that the ends of the scored portion are turned outwardly from the sheet when the ends are attached togethergresilient means extending through the displayrand against the scored portion in its outwardly turned position and fastening clips securedto the ends of the resilient means and comprising hooks adapted to be engaged at the sides of a support with a rounded top towhich the display is attached.
5. A display for a pump casing-having a top with opposite edgescurved downwardly tliedisplay comprising a sheet of flexible material scored intermediate'the ends thereof-to form an oval base terminating at the side edges of' the sheet material, the ends ofthe sheet being foldable upwardly together about the scored portions as a base andthereby turning the edges of the scored portion downwardly at theibottom thereof, means for securing the opposite edges together over the top of the base, a protector-at each side of the sheet overlapping the scored" ends above and below thesheet and secured thereto; fasteningmeans comprising a-resilient extensible spring extending through the display ontop of the base thereof, and fastening means at-the ends of the spring each comprising a clip attached to the" spring having hooks at the outer'e'n'd adapted'to engage the casing below the top thereof, the; spring conforming to 'thecurvature at both sides of the base of the display. and closely attaching the display to the top of the pump casing.
