Description
Dec. 27, 1966 s. B. TOPF 3,294,355
WALL HANGERS Filed Feb. 25, 1965 //V VE N TOR FIG.6 Seem BTOPF nited States Patent 3,294,355 WALL HANGERS Sam B. Topf, Coral Gables, Fla, assignor of one-half to Louis Rolniclr, Miami Beach, Fla. Filed Feb. 23, 1965, Ser. No. 434,228 3 Claims. (Cl. 248467) This invention relates to hangers and is more particularly directed to wall hangers for supporting pictures and the like on a wall.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a wall hanger for pictures and the like that are fastened to the wall and picture by an adhesive and that are readily interengaged to support the picture on the wall.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a wall hanger for supporting pictures and the like on a wall without defacing the wall.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a wall hanger for pictures and the like with a metallic hook member that is shaped and formed in one punch press operation.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a wall hanger for pictures and the like with a metallic hook member having a slotted portion whereby a pair of the wall hangers will interengage when one hanger is mounted on a wall and the other on the picture.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide wall hangers for pictures and the like that are simple in construction, inexpensive in cost and will maintain the pictures on the wall in an exactly vertical position without any danger of the hangers becoming disengaged.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a front perspective view of a wall hanger constructed in accordance with my invention.
FIGURE 2 is a rear perspective view.
FIGURES 3 and 4 are front and side elevational views respectively of the metallic hook member.
FIGURE 5 is a top plan View thereof.
FIGURE 6 is a rear elevational view of the wall hanger showing the metallic hook member in position prior to the flaps being folded.
FIGURE 7 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a picture mounted on a wall showing the use of a pair of my interlocking wall hangers.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 refers to a wall hanger constructed in accordance with my invention and consisting of two parts, namely, a metallic hook member H and a cloth or fabric support member C.
The hook member H comprises a piece of metal formed by a single punch press operation wherein the main body of the member H has the shape of a pair of dissimilar sized triangles 11 and 12 joined at their base portions with a tongue-like hook portion 16 punched from the main body 11, 12 leaving an opening 14 in the main body. During the punch press operation, the hook portion 16 is pressed out of coplanar relation with the body portion 11, 12 with the pointed end 13 and the hook portion 16 lying in the same plane as best shown by FIGURE 4 to form a slotted portion 14.
The cloth or fabric support member C consists of an elongated rectangular shaped flexible member 20 having a slot 22 extending inwardly of one edge 21 of the member 20 with the corners of the end portion 22 removed by diagonal cuts as at 23 and 24. One side of the entire length of the rectangular cloth member 20 is provided with an adhesive 25 for assembling the wall hanger 10 and for mounting the wall hanger 10 on a wall or picture as shown by FIGURES 6 and 7 respective y.
In the assembly of the wall hanger 10, the length of cloth or fabric 20 is placed with the adhesive side 25 upward and the metallic hook member H is placed on the fabric 20 at the position of the slot 22. The tongue 13 is inserted in the slot 22 and slid downwardly to the lowermost position therein. Then the end portions 21, 21 are folded as at 26 and the adhesive moistened so that the flap ends 21, 21 will adhere to the metallic hook member H and to each other to firmly fasten the hook member H in the fabric member C.
The wall hanger 10 is now ready for use either on a wall 30 or on a picture 40. Since the wall hanger 10 is capable of being interlocked with a second wall hanger 10, my device 10 may be used both on the wall 30 and the picture 41) as best shown by FIGURE 7. Upon moistening the adhesive 20 that is exposed on the fabric cloth C, the wall hanger 10- is then afiixedto the wall 30 with the tongue 13 of the hook member H directed upwardly. Now a second wall hanger 10 is affixed in a similar manner to the rear side of the picture 20 with the tongue 13 directed on a downward direction. The tongues 13 of both the wall hangers 10 are placed in juxtaposition with each other with each tongue 13 received by the slotted portion 14 of the other wall hanger 10. The wall hanger 10 mounted on the picture 40 will slide downwardly along the tongue 13 of the wall hanger 10 until the base portions 17, 17 of the tongues 13, 13 engage each other.
The picture 40 cannot be inadvertently placed on the wall 30 in a non-aligned or inclined position since the tongues 13 can only engage each other at the bases 17, 17, and as long as the wall hangers 10 are placed properly on the wall and picture, the latter must hang exactly in a vertical position.
Having disclosed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A wall hanger comprising a substantially rectangular sheet of flexible material having a slotted portion extending inwardly of one end forming a flap on each side of said slotted portion, an adhesive coating extending over one side of said sheet of flexible material, a hook member positioned on said sheet of flexible material in proximity of said slotted portion and in contact relation with said adhesive coating, a tongue portion extending outwardly of said hook member, said tongue portion being received by said slotted portion and extending outwardly of the other of said one side of said sheet of flexible material, and said flaps being folded at an oblique angle on themselves and on said hook member whereby said hook member is secured within said folded sheet of flexible material.
2. A wall hanger comprising a substantially elongated sheet of flexible material, said flexible materal having a slotted portion extending inward-1y from one edge thereof forming flaps on each side of said slotted portion, an adhesive coated on one side of said flexible material, a hook member having a substantially flat body portion lying substantially in a plane and a hook portion punched outwardly of said body portion, said hook portion lying in a plane spaced from that of said hook body member, said hook member positioned on said flexible material in contact relation with said adhesive coating, with said hook portion extending through said slotted portion to a position spaced from the other of said one side of said sheet of flexible material, and said flaps being folded at an oblique angle on themselves and on said hook member whereby said hook member is secured within said folded sheet of flexible material.
3. A wall hanger comprising a substantially elongated sheet of flexible material, said flexible material having a slotted portion extending inwardly from one edge thereof forming flaps on each side of said slotted portion, an adhesive coated on one side of said flexible material, a hook member having a substantially flat body portion with obliquely extending edge portions and a hook portion punched outwardly of said body portion, said hook portion lying in a plane spaced from that of said hook body member, said hook member positioned on said flexible material in contact relation with said adhesive coating, with said hook portion extending through said slotted portion to a position spaced from the other of said one side of said sheet of flexible material, and said flaps being folded at said oblique edge portions of said hook member and said flaps being glued to said hook member to each other whereby said hook member is secured within said folded sheet of flexible material.
