Description

U TE STATE ATET FFICE.
WILLIAM B. COATES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
POTATO-PARER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,254, dated November 29, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. CoA'rEs, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Knife for Paring and Slicing Potatoes, other Vegetables, and Fruits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Hy invention consists in submitting to the action of a steel blade, ground at on the underside, and a combined lateral and part circularly moving guard, secured to a removable gaging ferrule, sliding on another, by means of serrations, potatoes and other vegetables, and fruit for the purpose of evenly paring them and preventing` waste by thick paring, the paring passing out between the edge of the blade and guard, the latter being forward of the former. The rounded top of blade is for removing eyes from potatoes and specks from fruit. An important feature of the guard is, that it prevents the thumb being cut.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the drawing which forms a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the knife when completed. Fig. 2 is a p-erspective of handle ferrule. Fig. 3 1s a perspective of guard ferrule. Fig. 4 is a perspective of handle B is the handle-ferrule, of any desired size, drawn out of hollow metal tubing, with serrations E cut on the outside, at the same operation. The serrations constitute a permanent measuring gage. This ferrule is secured on neck of handle A, at H, by a screw or pin. The serrations on B should be shallow and smoothly done, though the thickness of the ferrule is greater than the guardferrule C. The handle-ferrule B should fit down close to the shoulder I on handle A.
C is the guard-ferrule constructed on the inside F precisely like B is on the outside at E, that it may fit neatly on B and be easily removed at pleasure. The guard D is soldered on to the outside of C at the side. The top of the guard should be shorter than the blade G and forward of the edge of the blade its entire lenoth.
G is the blade driven more or less'into the neck of the handle. It should be ground from the back toward the edge, leaving the lower part flat. The top is round pointed. Three sizes of knives can be manufactured, and also left handed ones.
After paring fruit the guardferrule C can be removed and the separate blade used for coring and quartering when desired.l
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent are,
The handle A, ferrules B, and C, guard D, and blade G, the whole being arranged and constructed substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
