PAPER-BAG- GUTTER.

Specification of Letters-Patent No. 27,959, dated April 24, 1860.

To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS l). BARRAUD, of No. 89 Murray street, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Paper-Bag Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the follow- .ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure l, represents a plan view of the gage table and cutters. Fig. 2, is a front Fig. 3, is a view in red lines of the sheet cut by the knife, of the proper shape for making the bag, the same sheet is represented in a folded state in dotted lines.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention is an improved apparatus for cutting paper for making bags; the object of which is to cut the paper, from large sheets in a proper shape and size, of which the bag is formed without waste or loss of time. For this purpose a gage table A, is used, the surface of which is marked ofi' withI gage lines as shown by the drawings Fig. l, which are arranged in a suitable relation to the cutters B, B. The cutters, or cutting knives are not straight their entire length but, at or near the middle of their length they are bent at obtuse angles as shown by the drawings, which gives the required shape to one side of the sheet of paper of which, the bag is to be made when it is out, in other words the lap, or strip a to be folded over and pasted is formed, without a loss of paper. The portions B, B, of the upper knife, the lower knife has a corresponding shape, should be parallel with the gage strips E, while the portion c, should form obtuse angles, with those portions. The lower knife B', is fixed to the side of the gage table A, and the shear or movable knife B, is pivoted to the fixed knife B', at d, similar to ordinary book-binders, or tinners shears Gr, G, are angular cutting plates screwed to the heel of the upper and lower knives which may be taken off and sharpened when necessary. These pices serve for cutting large sheets of paper, and form the lap portion a Fig. 3, in the same manner as described for cutting smaller sheets; but,

in using these cutting portions the sheet is moved along over the ga e table and over the front part of the kni e until the lap is to be formed, then the knife B, is brought down and the sheet is finally separated.

The handle portion J, of the knife B, has a rest K, which projects over the table a suitable distance, and in the top of this piece, is recessed a piece of elastic material such as cork or rubber, or a steel spring will serve, to break the blow of the knife and prevent arring to the hand in operating the knife.

L is an adjustable gage block for determining the width of lap to be cut for different sizes of bags.

E, E, E, are movable gage strips which keep the paper straight, and allow it to be presented to the knives in a proper manner. These canvbe adjusted on the table A, for cutting large or small sized bags.

Now, the manner of using this papercutter is as follows. The size of the bags to be cut is determined and the strips E, set accordingly, the paper is then placed under the knives in the direction indicated by the arrows of Fig. l and divided into two portions, one of which is represented by Fig. 3, each of which has a lap to be folded over to form the bag'. Thus with one cut of the knife two bags will be properly formed, or by using, several thicknesses of paper say 24 sheets 48 bags can be cut at one operation or by one stroke of the knife, an operation which when performed by hand in the present manner requires much time and labor, besides, a strip of paper is wasted in form.- ing each bag, but with the device herein described, there will be an economy, in time, in paper and the bags will be all of a uni form size.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'as an improved tool, or improved article of manufacture- A paper bag cutter composed of a gage table A, fixed angular knife B, angular hinged shear knife B, and otherwise con# structed as herein shown and described.
