SCISSORS-SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known t-hat I, JOHN C. LOVELAND, of Springfield, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Instrument for Sharpening Scissors, of which the following is aA full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a View of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a view of the case with the file removed. Figs. 3 and 4 details to be referred to hereafter.
As. seamstresses and others who have occasion to frequently use scissors are often inconvenienced by finding them dull, and lose much valuable time in sending them to be sharpened, the object of my present invention is to furnish them with a simple durable and efiicient instrument with which they can themselves in a few moments sharpen up their scissors.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
`In the drawings A is a metal case of the form shown in Fig. 2. It consists of a handle a and a circular box o, the rim c, of which is of a sufficient height to inclose the file B, Fig. 3 and the cap C Fig. 4L, without their projecting above the top of the rim as shown in Fig. l. From the top part of the rim c, projects a lip or guide d, the side 5 of which is straight or radial to the box This forms one side of a notch 6 cut through the rim c, and a short distance into the box b. The plate or cap C, has a corresponding notch 7 cut in its edge (see Fig. 4.)
The file B, Fig. 8, is a stout circular piece of steel having its edge cut like a file as at e, Fig. 8. It is Vperforated with a hole f which fits over a stud g (Fig. 2.) The cap C is perforated with a hole (Fig. 4;) through which a screw (Fig. l) passes and is screwed into t-he stud g when the parts are in place. As the notches 6 and 7 are cut down a little below the edge of the box Z2, the edge of the ile B, will be exposed at that part which is opposite to the notches, and when this part of the file has become worn by use the screw c', may be loosened and the file B, be revolved a part of a turn thus bringing a fresh portion of its edge into use.
Instead of the circular box o and file B a polygonal file may be employed the box being made of the proper form to receive it, but'the form above described is the one which I prefer.
If the rim c is made of sufficient width to form in it a deep notch 6-the lip CZ may be dispensed with-but this would make the instrument cumbersome orv reduce the diameter of the file B.
The manner of arranging and operating this instrument is as follows: The file B is placed in the box o the stud g projecting up into the hole The cap C, is placed on top of the file with its notch 7 corresponding to the notch 6 of the rim o. The screw z is then entered and is screwed down tight onto the cap C. This holds the parts in place. Then used the instrument is grasped by the handle c and one of the blades of a pair of scissors is pressed with its flat side against the edge 5 of the guide cl. It is then drawn a few times over the edge of the lile, the 'cutting edge of the blade resting in the proper position on the file.l T he other blade is then sharpened in the same manner, without the necessity of separating the blades. As the file takes off a portion of the edge of the blade in sharpening it will leave what is termed a feather edge on each blade, but this will be at once removed by shutting the two blades together with their edges'in contact, when a smooth cutting edge will be left on the scissors.
Heretofore I have spoken of the use of a file only, for the purpose of sharpening the scissors, it is however obvious that other sharpeners may be used in place of the file, as for instance, Arkansas or other suitably grain stone, or emery wheel.
That I claim as my invention and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture is- The above described instrument for sharpening scissors, consisting essentially of the revolving file B, and guide cl, constructed and operating in the manner substantially as set forth.
