Description
kUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. H. BAKER, OF NEWV MARKET, NEV JERSEY.
ROTARY PLANING-GUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,007, dated August 18, 1857.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, H. H. BAKER, of the village of New Market, in the county of Middlesex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Planing Lumber; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a fro-nt elevation of the face of the cutter wheel; Fig. 2, a half section of the same showing the construction; Figs. 3 and 4, partial sections showing the shape and position of the cutters in the recess; and
Fig. 5, a partial side elevationfor the same purpose.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a recess in the face of a rotary disk, and placing the cutters within it in such a manner as to enable me to plane by rotating cutters, either soft or hard wood, having the grain straight, transverse, knotty, curly, pinned or otherwise, so as not to leave upon the wood the least trace of the cutters, but impart to it a smooth and polished surface as that found upon glass; thereby dispensing with sandpapering, scraping, or otherwise polishing the surface to prepare it for varnish.
I construct my machine as follows: A, is a circular cast iron wheel, afiXed to an arbor placed in any convenient position, and of a diameter proportioned to the size of the lumber which it is intended to plane; having a rim of proper size to contain the cutters projecting from the back side, while the face of it is turned perfectly straight and flat. On the face of this wheel at the circumference I form a recess b, about three-fourths the width of the cutter, and of sufficient depth for the finishing cut. Within this recess I place two or more cutters at such angles as are generally used in common planes, and secure them by flanges and screws, or in any other convenient way. One of these cutters is of the gage form for removing refuse parts; the other is flat, having its edge curved to correspond with the recess as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and set exactly in the plane of the face of the wheel. This cutter may be capped if required. By means of this recess I am enabled to use the face of the wheel for the treble purpose: First, of preventing the cutters from enter ing beyond the given depth, thus securing a smooth and polished surface; second, of permitting the lumber to be fed to the cutters by hand without the use of rollers, carriage, or other means; and, third, of planing straight or to a line without a gage to guide the lumber.
I would not wish to be understood as claiming the use of rotary cutters as used by Daniel, Woodworth, Fay, and others; neither do I claim a rotating disk, as I am aware of its having been previously used, but
lVhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The recess b in the face of the cutter wheel substantially for the uses and purposes above set forth.
H. H. BAKER. Witnesses:
G. H. BABoooK, JOHN F. WALKER.
