Description

Dec. 30, 1952 J. P. LA BARBER PAD HOLDER WITH A STRAIGHT EDGE Filed Jan. 24, 1950 INVENTOR. :Lmes lafiarber BY M Patented Dec. 30, 1952 UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE PAD HOLDER WITH A STRAIGHT EDGE James P. La Barber, Oakland, Calif.
Application January 24, 1950, Serial No. 140,181
1 Claim. 1 The present invention relates to improvements in a pad holder with a straight-edge. It consists of the combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a drafting board adapted to have a conventional pad or tablet rapidly secured thereto with facility and ease, the board having a straight-edge thereon to facilitate sketching or drawing on the pad by draftsmen, artists, mechanics and the like.
More specifically stated, I provide a drafting board arranged to be inserted between a backing on a pad and a stack of superimposed sheets secured to the backing. During the insertion of the board, one margin of the stack of sheets is butted against the straight-edge on the board. The sheets are restrained from slipping away from the straight-edge during the sketching or drafting steps. The straight-edge projects above the pad and serves as a guide for drafting triangles or the like.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification continues. The novel features of the invention will be set forth in the claim hereunto appended.-
Drawing For a better understanding of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of the application, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of my pad holder with a straight-edge;
Figure 2 is another perspective view showing a pad secured to the holder and disclosing a triangle placed on the pad; and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line III-III of Figure 2.
While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, it should be understood that various charges, or modifications, may be made within the scope of the annexed claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
Detailed description Referring to the drawing, I provide a drafting board indicated generally at A, which may be fashioned from any suitable material. This board has been shown as being rectangular in outline, and having spaced-apart parallel chan- It will be noted from Figures 1 and 2 that a straight-edge I2 is fixed to the upper surface of the board so as to extend vertically thereabove along one side of the board. This straight-edge has a fiducial or reference face [2, which is dis posed parallel with and disposed in the same plane as the inner surface ill of left-hand web [0, which incidentally defines the bottom of one of the channels.
As illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, a conventional pad or tablet C is adapted to be supported by the board A. Such a pad includes a backing 14 having a stack of superimposed sheets l5 secured thereto by an adhesive layer i6. Successive sheets may be torn 01f along the adhesive layer from the remainder of the sheets.
The distance between the inner or confronting surfaces III of the webs [0 corresponds with the width of the backing Hi. This backing is adapted to be telescoped endwise into the channels B from one end of the board; and thus opposing margins M of the backing will bear against the webs, precluding the backing from shifting laterally.
Inasmuch as the left-hand margins of the backing and superimposed sheets register with each other in such conventional pads or tablets C, these margins of the sheets will be positioned in contact with the fiducial face [2' of the straight-edge when the pad is applied to the board. It will be noted that the backing I4 is disposed below the board while the stack of sheets I5 is arranged thereabove. The webs IEI embrace the backing, thus restraining the stack of sheets from shifting away from the straightedge.
Turning now to Figure 2, I show the straightedge [2 projecting above the uppermost sheet in the pad to constitute a guide for a drafting triangle D, or the like. The board A has a fiat upper surface I! extending at least the entire width of the sheets, thus providing a good firm support for the sheets.
Summary of operation In applying the pad C to the drafting board A, the pad is opened up so as to expose its backing M. This backing is introduced endwise into the channels B from one end of the board and is pushed toward the opposite end thereof, with the superimposed sheets I5 arranged above the board.
During the insertion of the backing, its opposing margins 14' will be embraced by the confronting surfaces 10' of the webs i9, retaining the backing from shifting laterally. This will bring 3 the left-hand margin of the stack of sheets up against the fiducial face l2 of the straight-edge 42 in the manner shown in Figure 2.
The draftsman, artist, mechanic, or other person can utilize the drafting triangle or the like, with the face l2 of the straight-edge constituting a base or guide. Successive sheets may be torn from the pad over the adhesive layer end l6 thereof. The right-hand Side of the board is unobstructed to permit drafting triangles of various heights to be utilized. The entire device may be made of plastic, metal, wood or other material, or a combination thereof.
The flanges II are disposed underneath opposing marginal sections of the inserted backing. However, the longitudinal central portion of the backing is exposed to facilitate withdrawal of the back from underneath the board.
I claim:
A drawing pad holder with an integral straight edge comprising: a fiat drawing board having spaced-apart parallel channels disposed on its underneath surface and facing each other with an unobstructed space therebetween; the channels being arranged along opposing sides of the board to slidably and removably receive a backing of a drawing pad of paper with the backing being disposed below the board and the sheets of the same pad being disposed above and lying on the flat and unobstructed upper surface of the drawing board; the channels having inner confronting surfaces extending at right angles to the upper surface of the flat drawing board and adapted to embrace opposing margins of the drawing pad backing; said board having an integral straight-edge rising above the upper surface thereof and extending at right angles thereto; the straight-edge extending parallel with the length of the channels, and having a fiducial face disposed substantially in the same plane as one of the confronting surfaces so as to permit the sheets of the pad to have one of their edges contacting the fiducial face; the friction created by the sheets disposed above the board and the pad backing received in the channels being sufficient to hold the pad in a fixed position on the holder even though the holder is moved into various positions; the straight edge having suificient height to extend above the uppermost sheet of the pad to act as a guide for a triangle or a T-square.
