UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. GRISHAM, OF SELMA, ARKANSAS.
WHIFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,223, dated August 8, 1882,
Application filed May 18,1882.
To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I,W.E.GRIsHAM,ofSelma, in the county of Drew and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful [m provements in Whiffletree-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad totheaccompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to whiffletree-hooks or devices for connecting the traces to the ends of a single-tree and the latter to the doubletree or to the Wagon; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a whiffletree having my improved attachment, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 00 m.
A represents the single-tree, and B B are straps bolted or otherwise secured around the ends of the same, and having forwardly-projecting ends, forming brackets O C. Asimilar strap, B, having rearwardly-projecting ends, forming the bracket 0, is bolted or otherwise secured centrally upon the single-tree. Between the brackets O O of each of the straps is pivoted a pair of fiat sheet-metal links, D 1), arranged one above and covering or overlapping the other, so as to form virtually a doubfe link of great strength, and having their opposite sides provided with slots E. When the links D D are spread apart, as shown at one place in the drawings, the said slots will (No model.) s
register, so as to permit the insertion of a cockeye or bolt, which, by simply closing the links together, is safely retained in position.
To detach the traces or the whiftletree, it is necessary to spread the links D apart until the slots E again register. Hence it isimpossible' for any of the parts to become detached by accident.
My improved whifliletree attachment is exceeding simple in construction, safe, durable, and easily manipulated.
I am aware of the patent to Santoe, No. 153,497, July 28,1874, and I disclaim the construction therein shown. By my improved construction the links are at all times closely in contact, one above the other, and they cannotbe shaken apart so as to permit the trace to become detached.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the whiffletree A, of the strap B, having brackets G O, and the flat sheet-metal links D D, pivoted permanently between said brackets, one above and covering the other, with which it is in close contact, thus forming virtually a double link, said links being provided on opposite sides with slots E, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM EDWIN GRISHAM.
