BARREL-HOOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,052, dated August 1, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, QUINCY KING, of Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Barrel-Hoop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists of a spring-conne tion between the ends of a barrel-hoop to form an elastic section by which the hoop may expand when the barrel swells to prevent being broken and contract when the barrel shrinks to keep the barrel tight and prevent the hoop from falling or slipping offfrom the barrel. The form of the spring which I employ consists of'a wire or bar of metal bent-forward and backward on itself ina series of loops about as long as the width of the hoop, and being connected at the ends to the ends of the hoop, respectively.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a barrel-hoop having an elastic section as I propose, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the hoop and horizontal section of a portion of a barrel.

A represents the hoop, which has a loop, B, at each end for the connection of the elastic or spring section C, which is here represented as a rod of spring metal bent forward and backward on itself to form a series of loops, to, as shown, and being connected at the ends by hooking them through the loops B of the hoop.

It is to be understood that my improved hoop is applicable to all hooped vessels.

1 am aware that it is not new to provide a barrel-hoop with a spring to compensate for expansion and contraction of the barrel, and do not therefore desire to broadly claim such; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The special construction shown-that is, a spring formed of loops lying flat against the barrel, thus obviating liability of being caught by some obstruction andbroken or pulled off by rough handling of the barrel.

2. The combination, with a barrel-hoop, of an elastic or spring section, C, consisting of a rod or bar of spring metal bent in a series of loops, a, substantially as described.
