Description
Nov. 25, 1952 l. FLORMAN CIGARETTE HOLDER WITH SCOOP FOR FILTER MATERIAL Filed April- 20. -1950 MM W a WAM Patented Nov. 25, Y 1952 OFFICE `CIGARECIYIIE HOLDER WITH SCOOP FOR FILTER MATERIALr` Irvigrirman, New York, N. Y. s n Application April zo, 195o, serial No. 157,013
' This invention-"relates to cigarette and cigar holders. i
vIt is'an object of the present invention to provide means facilitating collection and insertion of filtering material in parts of a cigarette holder whereby to avoid capsules and other compressed filtering assemblies heretofore used in such holders.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means offering the possibility of controlling the quantity of the filtering material to be used or the necessity for change and removal thereof.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide means affording ready filling of the cigarette holder with loose, granular filtering material, ensuring simple construction and inexpensive manufacture of the holder Which has a minimum number of parts, is compact, has easily separable parts to effect the filling of the same with filtering material, and is emcient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the holder with portions thereof broken away and shown in section whereby to display the interior construction of the holder.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view looking upon the part containing the scoop which receives and gathers the filtering material.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the mouth piece part being extended into a box of the filtering material to scoop a quantity of the same.
Referring now to the drawing, IIJ represents a mouth piece having a bore II extending therethrough. Said bore provides a smoke passage extending from a large recess I2 in the outer end of the mouth piece I0. In this recess and extending outwardly therefrom is an externally threaded coupling member I3 having threaded engagement with the outer end of the mouth piece and is adapted to receive a housing part I4 having a tubular section.
Within the recess I3 is a sleeve or scoop member I5 adapted to receive and retain filtering material I 6, such as silica gel, clay and other granulated material. 'I'his sleeve I5 has a' scoop section I'I terminating in an inclined open end edge. With the mouth piece II) removed from the housing member I4, the mouth piece can be used as a handle for the scoop portion I'l adapted to enter a. relatively flat box I8 in such a manner as to gather the filtering material I 6 therefrom and to 1 Claim. (Cl. 131-207) Y 2 obse'rve thecollecte'd filter material in the-scoop section. With the'sleeve or scoop I5 filled with the material, the mouth piece I0 can be further connected to the housing member I4 and receptor 23 by threaded portions 'at I3. Y f
When the inclined open end edge of section I'I is inserted in hollow housing or section I4 the filtering material l6- then fills out said latter section I4 and is in contact with a substantial portion of the inner Wall surface thereof, as seen in Fig. 1.
Fixed to the housing member I4 is a hollow spindle 2I having a passage or bore 22 extending therethrough and communicating with the filtering material. Adjustable on this spindle is the receptor or end member 23 that has a skirt portion 24 slidable upon the part I4. The spindle shaft is flared at its outer end, as indicated at 26, to prevent the outward displacement of the member 23. A spring 25 is disposed about the spindle shaft and reacts between the member 23 and the end Wall defining the housing part I4 to hold the member 23 in its extended position. When it is desired to remove a cigarette from the holder, the member 23 is adjusted on the spindle shaft so that the flared end 26 will eject the cigarette from retaining opening 21 in the member 23. The housing part I4, the spindle shaft 2l, the ejecting member 26 and the spring 25 provide a unitary assembly which is separable from the mouth piece I0 that contains the scoop I5.
The scoop I5 may be provided with slots or long apertures which may serve as windows to see when the ltering material needs to be changed. The housing part I4 surrounding the scoop is of transparent material so that observation can be made through such windows. Such an opening or slot is indicated at 28 and the same is of smaller diameter than the average diameter of the respective particles of the filtering material.
The sleeve or scoop I5 is formed of a hollow cylindrical tubing section by cutting the same on a bias to obtain said inclined end edge I'I. The scoop lits the recess I 2 in a sufficiently tight manner so that it will not leave the mouth piece I0 when it is used. As apparent from Fig. 1 scoop section I5 in recess I2 and housing section I4 define a chamber for accommodating said filter material IB in a relatively compact condition, said scoop section and said housing section frictionally engaging each other to thereby detachably couple the mouthpiece I0 to receptor 23.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
A smokers article comprising a mouthpiece portion, a socket portion adapted to receive a cigarette, and a lter chamber therebetween having end walls with bores of smaller diameters than the diameter of said chamber, said mouthpiece portion being separable from said socket portion, such separation being eiective at said chamber, said chamber being dened by a pair of concentric and telescoping tubes, one of said tubes being attached to one of said portions and terminating in an inclined edge whereby saidone tube by means of its inclined edge may be used as a scoop container and with said one portion as a handle for said scoop container to facilitate scooping and retaining of comminuted ltering means therein, the other tube being engageable with said one tube to support said one portion and said scoop container within said other tube, whereby to connect said socket portionto said mouthpiece portion through said chamber, and
fastening means located at one end of said inclined edge for joining said mouthpiece portion to said socket portion and for locating the other end of said inclined edge at one of the end walls of said chamber.
