CHURN-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,798, dated July 25, 1882,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY M. W1sE,VIo- TOR M. STEVENS, and BENNE'I CHAPMAN, of Oskaloosa, J efi'erson county, Kansas, have in- 5 vented a new and Improved Churn-Power, of \\hl0h.th6 following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention consists of a spring-power motor combined with a churn having a rotary IO dasher turning on a vertical axis, by locating the base of the frame of the motive power on the top of the churn, and securing it thereto in a novel and simple manner, and gearing the high-speed shaft thereof with the shaft of the dasher, said speed-shaft being provided With a weighted brake-lever along which the weight may be shifted from time to time as the spring relaxes to regulate the motion, as hereinafter fully described.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved churn-power attachment together with the churn, which is partly broken out to show the dasher. Fig.2 is an elevation ofthe said power and churn, taken in aplane at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
The churn is represented by the upright circular casea and the rotary dasher b, arranged on a vertical axis'within said case,from which a shaft, 0, extends up through the top of the churn for the application of the power to it. This shaft 0 is fitted in the brackets d ande of the frame f of a spring-power apparatus for support above the top of the churn on which the said frame rests, said frame being attached thereto by means of the rods or bolts g, eye- 0 stud h, and key 2', so that it can be readily detached when required, and so contrived that the power can be readily attached to the top of any similar churn. The high-speed shaftj of the power is geared by the bevel-driver k and bevel-pinion Z with the shaft 0 for apply- 5 iug the motion to the dasher, and said shaftj is provided with a balance-wheel, m, to regulate the motion, and also with a brake-lever,
n, to which a weight is to be applied, said lever being notched or serrated along a portion of its length to secure the weight at different positions along it, to which said weight is to be shifted from time to time as the spring weakens by expansion.
It will be seen that the arrangement is sim- 5 ple and cheap, and so that the p men can be readily applied.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateut 1. The combination of a spring-power with a churn having a vertical dasher in the described arrangement, consisting of the attachment of the power to the churn-top by the rods 9, eye-stud h, and key 6, and gearing said power with the dasher by bevel-wheels k and I, said dasher being supported in brackets 61 and e of the said power apparatus above the churn-top, substantially as described.
2. The-combination, with the transmitting- 7o shaft j of a spring-power apparatus geared with the churn-dasher c, ofa weighted brakelever, it, having a series of notches along it for securing the weight in different positions, substantially as described.
